Summary

Because public opinion surveys about Muslim Americans prior to 9/11 are rare, the fifth chapter turns to the news media as a vital lens in assessing how Muslims and Muslim Americans have been communicated to the general public since 1992. The volume of news coverage of a racialized group signifies that group’s salience at a given point in time, while the sentiment of such coverage can signal how Muslim Americans are being communicated to – and perhaps even perceived by – the mass public. Overall, the results demonstrate that media coverage of Muslims and Muslim Americans is broadly negative and has worsened over time.
