Summary

Chapter 3 assesses spelling evidence for the raising of OE ǣ, which was a very long process that did not reach completion (at [i:]) until the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries. Since use of the ‘ash’ <æ> was discontinued after 1066, the phonetic correspondences of its orthographic representations are notoriously hard to determine. However, words in which the vowel shortened may be useful, in that a shortened [ɛ:] is spelt , and shortened [æ:] is spelt , , etc. The raising of ǣ may have started in the eleventh century, and may have provided a prelude to the GVS, or may have been one of the first stages of the shift itself.
