Summary

This chapter adopts a corpus linguistic approach with a focus on exploring variation within the Sydney Corpus of Television Dialogue (SydTV), on the basis of the analysis of key words. This chapter is a companion piece to Chapter 7 in that it adds further information and new analyses prompted by some of the findings. Thus, the chapter uses the corpus findings as a starting point for a case study of the use of ain’t in the corpus – with a focus on characterisation and linguistic stereotyping (collocation analysis). To explain findings, the chapter draws on a functional approach to television series (FATS).
