The Hybridization of Democracy

The introduction examines the processes through which democracy has become an almost global political form in recent decades, and it describes symptoms of crisis in some polities. It proposes a distinct methodology for understanding of democracy, based partly in integration theory, partly in global sociology and partly in the sociology of concepts. This theory forms a perspective that allows us to comprehend the weakening of democracy in many societies, especially as exemplified by populist government.
