Commemoration of Benefactors

Summary

The old Missa pro Benefactoribus, as copied in Stokes's Book in the Registry, carries us back quite early in University History; and the long list of names which are read, or taken as read, at the interesting Service in Commemoration of Benefactors, reminds us of the continued liberality of generous donors down the ages. And the splendid procession still marches on.

Royal Benefactors lead the way. A remarkable list of homely but well-to-do worthies, who filled the important post of University Bedells, comes next. Founders of Professorships and Scholarships are remembered. John Crane who provided for the relief of sick scholars, and Henry Latham who started a Pension Fund in connection with University families, are recorded. Benefactors of the Library, of the Schools, of the Museums, of the Laboratories are named. Former Chancellors and University officials are linked with munificent donors of modern times. Prominent names are emphasised, like those of Hugh de Balsham, Sir Richard Whittington, and Sir Isaac Newton.

Altogether some two hundred names are included in this remarkable record.

Several times the list has been revised, forgotten benefactors being remembered, and new names added. Such additions are continually forthcoming.
