Summary

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains the most effective treatment for severe or treatment-resistant depression, especially for those presenting with psychotic or catatonic features (Kirov et al., 2021). It might exert its effects via different biological mechanisms that remain to be fully understood.
