Summary
F. A. Wolf’s groundbreaking vision of the Homeric poems as a succession of ancient literary cultures was prepared not only by Enlightenment aesthetic debates and the historical study of the Old Testament. This essay explores seventeenth- and eighteenth-century scholars who already saw Homer largely in terms of his ancient readers and enthusiasts, including the cult of Homer in art, and who might or might not distinguish this study sharply from textual criticism.
