Chapter 1 provides a general introduction into the topic of the book: the tension between the Union’s objective of integrating third countries into the internal market and the need to safeguard the autonomy of the EU’s legal order. The chapter also introduces the main concepts, lays out the development of the argument, presents the aims and scope of the book, explains the choice of case studies and provides a synopsis of its contents.
