Summary

Chapter 1 examines the history of Venice and the position of the citizen class (the cittadini) in the period of Odoni’s lifetime, arguing that at the time the city was reinventing itself as a cultural capital there was considerable social fluidity, causing some citizens to be less constrained in their actions and modes of self-presentation than nobles.
