Introduction. African fruit production, as well as regional andinternational fruit trade, have experienced heavy economic losses over the past decade dueto the damage caused by fruit flies, especially B. invadens Drew Tsuruta& White (Tephritidae: Diptera). Bactrocerainvadensattacks fruits belonging to numerous botanical families, several of which are of greateconomic importance. The females of these flies generally lay their eggs in mature fruits,but some can lay in green-immature fruits. Materials and methods. Theinfluence of the species, variety and phenology of fruits on the fruit attractiveness toB. invadens and the elicitation of B. invadensegg-laying behaviour were studied in the laboratory. Fruits harvested regularly during theyears 2008 and 2009 from orchards in the Niayes area (Senegal) were exposed to gravidfemales in cages set for the different factors tested. The exposed fruits were thenincubated and the pupae emerging from them were counted. Results anddiscussion. Bactrocera invadens females laid eggs in ripefruits. Within the same fruit species, the variety plays an important role in egg-layingpreference. Hence, among the mango varieties tested, the Pêche variety hosted the highestnumber of pupae per fruit, while the Palmer variety hosted the lowest number. Comparisonamong different fruit species showed that mature papaya was more infested than maturemango or citrus. Furthermore, flies were unable to develop on lime.Conclusion. Our study showed that B. invadens can infestgreen and ripe host fruits, and even immature abscised fruits. Consequently, management ofthis pest must include preventive measures in the development and implementation of anintegrated management system.

Introduction. Dans plusieurs pays, le psylle Cacopsylla pyri (Hemiptera, Psyllidae) est considéré comme le ravageur majeur du poirier. Afin de préserver les ennemis naturels de ce ravageur, la lutte contre C. pyri passe actuellement par l’utilisation de matières actives aptes à préserver les auxiliaires de l’insecte, voire de substances préventives, dont la kaolinite. Pour la première fois en Tunisie, nous avons testé l’efficacité de ce produit en traitement d’hiver, en comparaison avec l’huile minérale traditionnellement utilisée. Matériel et méthodes. Pour déterminer le moment opportun d’un traitement contre C. pyri, les adultes présents en hiver dans un verger de poiriers ‘Williams’ ont été échantillonnés par frappage des branches. Les femelles récoltées ont été disséquées pour déterminer le stade de développement de leurs ovaires. Ces observations ont permis de déclencher, au moment opportun, une application hivernale à base de kaolinite, dont les résultats ont été comparés à ceux obtenus par un traitement à l’huile minérale. L’impact de ces deux traitements sur la ponte des femelles d’hiver et les larves qui en ont été issues a été étudié ; conjointement, la phénologie du poirier a été évaluée par plusieurs contrôles. Résultats. Les applications hivernales de kaolinite ont évité la ponte des femelles de psylle sur poirier. En conséquence, ce produit a réduit significativement les populations larvaires de C. pyri jusqu’au stade de chute des pétales. En outre, la kaolinite n’a pas eu d’impact sur le déroulement de la floraison. Conclusion. En Tunisie, la kaolinite s’est révélée très performante dans la prévention des pontes des femelles hivernantes de C. pyri ; elle pourrait donc être insérée dans un programme de lutte intégrée contre ce ravageur.

Dans la région méditerranéenne, une composante importante des habitats aquatiques est constituée par les zones humides stagnantestemporaires. Ces milieux ont des usages multiples (chasse, agriculture, protection des oiseaux), mais sont en contre partieliés à une nuisance forte : le développement de moustiques, du genre Aedes, en particulier.L'objet de cet article est la mise en évidence d'une relation existant entre les caractéristiques des habitats (aux échelles macroet micro-géographique) et la distribution spatiale des pontes d'Aedes caspius.Les groupements végétaux, par l'intermédiaire des espèces discriminantes, permettent de localiser avec précision les différentsniveaux de fertilité des aires de pontes des Aèdes caspius. Les variables explicatives humidité, texture, oxydes ferriques sont traduites d'une manière pertinente par la végétation, cette dernière pouvant être appréhendée de manière opérationnelle par l'utilisation des niveaux écologiques "outils techniques et opérationnels" de l'Entente Interdépartementale pour la Démoustication du littoral Méditerranéen (EIDM).

Le complexe d'espèces jumelles mariae se développe dans les creux de rocher (rock pools) contenant de l'eau de mer. L'espèceAedes mariae Sergent & Sergent, 1903 se rencontre sur le pourtour du bassin tyrrhénien et notamment sur la côte rocheuse del'ouest algérien. Le suivi durant une année de la dynamique de la population a permis de démontrer que le cycle biologique estsensiblement différent de celui observé en Méditerranée septentrionale. La présence de femelles actives aux mois de janvier etfévrier et d'un stock réduit d'oeufs dans les gîtes, montrent que la population d'Ae. mariae des côtes occidentales algériennesadopte une double stratégie de développement. Les éclosions les plus importantes sont enregistrées lorsque la conductivité estcomprise entre 52.000 et 75.000 µS.m-1 résultant d'un apport d'eau de mer et de la concentration en sels sous l'effet de l'évaporation.Les conductivités supérieures à 100.000 µS.m-1, entravent l'éclosion des oeufs en favorisant la dessiccation biologique.

In 1996, many swarms of red locust, Nomadacris septemfasciata (Serville), formed in the Buzi-Gorongosa outbreak area in Mozambique. Some of these swarms migrated and crossed international boundaries, on a scale not seen since the last plague of 1929–1944.

The swarms did not breed in countries that they invaded, namely, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and South Africa. On the other hand, in Malawi, successful breeding by the swarms resulted in hopper bands. Filial generation outbreaks continued into 1997 in the breeding area, but at a reduced scale.

An analysis is made of the possible causes of the upsurges of 1996 and the likely implications to the preventive control strategy that has been the principle for red locust plague prevention.

There is need for a further comprehensive study of the Buzi-Gorongosa plains so as to understand better the factors that contribute to its high potential as an outbreak area.

The structure of gonads and gametes is highly diversified in siluroid fishes; in some groups the testes are composite with an anterior part formed of spermatogenetic tissues and the posterior part of seminal vesicles which may or may not store spermatozoa. For catfish species of aquacultural interest, ovaries present the same general morphology as in other teleosts with oviducts. Spermatozoa are biflagellated in the Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and monoflagellated in the European catfish (Silurus glanis) and African catfishes (Clarias gariepinus, Heterobranchus longifilis). The egg size shows considerable intergroup differences, from 0.8–1.2 mm in some Pimelodidae and Clariidae up to 15–20 mm in Ariidae. In numerous cases, the eggs are adhesive and develop either a surrounding sticky layer (Ictalurus, Chrysichthys, Silurus) or an adhesive attachment disc (Clarias, Heterobranchus). Fertilization is in general external but internal fertilization is reported in some species. The annual sperm production was measured in European catfish and Channel catfish as 1.7 × 1011 and 1.8 × 1010 spermatozoa.kg-1 body weight, respectively. In females, the fecundity ranges from about 50 eggs per spawn in ariids up to more than 100 000 eggs.kg-1 body weight, e.g. in pimelodids and clariids. A large variety of controlled reproduction systems are found in the siluroids. In some cases (Ictalurus, Chrysichthys, Hoplosternum), spawning occurs naturally in ponds or tanks provided that adequate spawning substrates are available; fertilized eggs are collected immediately after spawning and placed into incubators until hatching. But for most species, although natural or semi-natural spawning could be achieved in captivity, the tendency at the present time is to develop techniques using hormonal-induced ovulation and artificial insemination in order to control the various steps of reproduction and to allow gamete preservation and manipulation. Oocyte maturation and ovulation or spermiation can be induced in many species by a large variety of hormones (GnRHs, fish gonadotropins, hCG, various steroids etc). Some information is available on gamete biology and preservation. Sperm motility is short-lived, not exceeding 70–80 s of forward movement as in most other freshwater teleosts. A peculiarity of the European catfish sperm is the activation by urine during sampling which could be prevented by direct collection in an immobilizing solution (NaCl 200 mM, Tris HCl 30 mM, pH 7.0). Spermatozoa cryopreservation was successfully attempted in several species. Ova generally survive only a few hours after ovulation and fertilization must be carried out soon after. Methods for gamete collection, insemination and incubation of eggs are described for the most widely cultured siluroid species.

Quelques aspects de la reproduction du listao (Katsuwonus pelamis) dans deux zones distinctes de l'ouest de l'océan Indien ont été étudiés de février 1989 à février 1994. A partir d'échantillonnages faits, soit à bord des thoniers senneurs sur du poisson frais (1 656 individus), soit à la conserverie de Maurice sur des thons décongelés (4 152 individus), les différents stades du cycle sexuel ont pu être précisés. La taille de première maturité sexuelle est atteinte à 41–42 cm (longueur à la fourche) chez les femelles et à 42-43 cm chez les mâles, correspondant à des individus âgés d'environ 1,5 an. L'évolution mensuelle de la proportion des différents stades macroscopiques de maturation des gonades montre que, quel que soit le mois considéré, il y a toujours plus de 70 % des femelles échantillonnées qui présentent des ovaires en fin de maturation (stade IV). Les variations du rapport gonado-somatique (RGS) montrent que la reproduction du listao a lieu toute l'année mais qu'il existe cependant plusieurs périodes d'activité sexuelle plus intense. L'observation histologique de 737 ovaires indique la présence de follicules post-ovulatoires (indicateur de ponte récente) pendant les 2 périodes de mousson, mousson de nord-ouest (novembre à mars) et mousson de sud-est (juin à août) tandis que la proportion d'ovaires présentant des follicules atrétiques est maximale aux 2 périodes d'inter-mousson (avril-mai et septembre-octobre). L'étude du sex-ratio montre que. pour l'ensemble de la période d'étude et pour les deux zones considérées, la proportion de mâles est significativement supérieure à celle des femelles. Ses variations mensuelles semblent indiquer une accentuation de la prédominance des mâles à chaque période de ponte plus intense.

The fecundity and duration of oviposition in three strains of Callosobruchus rhodesianus from the highveld, middleveld and lowveld regions of Zimbabwe and a laboratory strain were recorded on cowpea and greengram. Within-legume variability for both parameters was high among the four strains. The lowveld strain was the least fecund and had the longest duration of oviposition. The middleveld strain showed the highest fecundity on cowpea, but did not differ significantly from the other three strains on greengram.

The oviposition behaviour of the cowpea weevils, Callosobruchus rhodesianus (Pic.) and Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) on clean and egg-laden adzuki beans was examined in choice and no-choice experiments. The oviposition rate of C. maculatus was greater than C. rhodesianus in both experiments. Both weevil species were able to distinguish between clean and egg-laden beans. Discrimination by both species was greater against seeds with 12 eggs than with 6, regardless of which species had previously laid eggs. There was a weak indication that the presence of C. maculatus eggs at high densities might reduce the oviposition rate of C. rhodesianus.

Population of Spodoptera litura F. were monitored through pheromone-baited traps during the rainy season 1988 and 1989 in groundnut fields in relation to oviposition on leaves. Four peaks of adult catches were recorded. First and second peaks were smaller and caused no threat to crop. Third peak was observed at the pegging and pod-initiation stage during first week of September and coincided with the greatest oviposition on leaves. The fourth peak was greatest and occurred between 40th and 43rd standard week. However, no oviposition was recorded on groundnut during this period. The moths possibly dispersed and/or migrated to other areas with crops at an appropriate stage of susceptibility.

Le cycle sexuel de Cerastoderma edule a été étudié durant l'année 1987 sur plusieurs sites le long du littoral atlantique français, de la baie de Somme au bassin d'Areachon. Cette étude vise à définir les modalités de la ponte et les facteurs qui la régissent, afin d'identifier à ce niveau, les causes de la variabilité du recrutement. Dans ce but, une méthode commune est mise en œuvre. Elle repose essentiellement sur la reconnaissance des stades de maturité sexuelle et sur les fluctuations de l'indice de condition. Les pontes peuvent être : précoce, printanière, estivale ou tardive, et, selon leur nombre et leur importance, variables selon les sites. La première ponte apparaît toujours en réponse au stimulus thermique qui correspond, au printemps, à l'amélioration des conditions climatiques et trophiques. A l'intérieur de l'espace latitudinal défini, il n'apparaît pas de net gradient au niveau des pontes, ce qui démontre que celles-ci ne sont pas déclenchées par une valeur définie de la température. L'efficacité de la ponte printanière est liée à une valeur seuil de l'indice de condition. Le nombre et l'intensité des pontes estivales et automnales sont fonction de l'importance de la ponte printanière. Il en résulte une forte variabilité dans les conditions de recrutement. Dans l'optique recherchée, certains principes prédictifs peuvent cependant être avancés.

This paper describes the large-scale production of eggs and larvae of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and shows how spawning can be planned to produce viable eggs throughout the year by manipulation of photoperiod and temperature. The rearing temperature was 9.5-22 °C during spawning and 9-24 °C during the gametogenesis. The photoperiodic cycles tested were normal (i. e. the photoperiodic cycle observed at Palavas-les-Flots, mediterranean coast, France, 1984/1987) advanced by 3 to 5 months and delayed by 2 months.

The ovipositional responses of the stem-borer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), to the maize cultivar Inbred A are greater than the maize cultivar, Nyamula. These responses are elicited by certain characters of the plants that are perceivable prior to the moth's arrival on the plants (distance-perceivable) as well as those perceivable after arrival on the plants (contact-perceivable). Distance-perceivable characters were not found to be responsible for the difference in the oviposition on the two cultivars tested.

The contact-perceivable characters of the maize cultivars differ in eliciting oviposition by moths. Contact with the cultivar Nyamula elicits much less oviposition than with the other cultivar tested.
