The presented study investigates differences in engineering designers' CAD performance when modelling from two types of projections in technical drawings – isometric and orthographic. The results revealed significant differences in the percentage of correctly replicated components' size and shape, indicating better CAD outcomes when generating CAD models from the orthographic projection. In addition, a comparison of duration, as well as the number and type of sketch entities, sketch relations, and CAD features, showed that CAD modelling processes were similar in both conditions.

Product development in today's manufacturing companies is characterized by multiple development projects under intense time constraints. This means that the success of projects impacts the company's success significantly. However, industrial practices show that many projects fail to meet their time targets. This paper presents a methodology to systematically improve project schedule adherence of development projects by combining exploratory data analysis of historic project data with project scheduling optimizations to enhance the project schedules and enable more successful projects.

This paper examines how human and organizational factors need to be designed to achieve strong technological maturity of either the products or the production process. In a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fs/QCA), a combination of intensive training and strong worker participation is found to be associated with strong technological maturity in the two organizational contexts: firms with a strong entrepreneurial culture and in large firms oriented towards customer-oriented innovation. Overall, the paper uncovers designs or causal recipes for a successful digital transformation.

In many industrial sectors, modularization of products and services is considered as an important contribution to increased efficiency and competitiveness. Research has developed many modularization approaches, however, there is a gap between industrial practice in modularization and state-of-research in this field, which partly is due to shortcomings in "measuring" the value and state of modularization. This papers contribution is an analysis of industrial real-world cases to contrast practice and research, and a compilation of metrics in the context of modular product design from research.

The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to the massive development and use of health indicators. Drawing on the history of international public health and of the management of infectious disease, this paper attempts to show that the normative power acquired by metrics during the pandemic can be understood in light of two rationales: epidemiological surveillance and performance assessment. On the one hand, indicators are established to evaluate and rank countries’ responses to the outbreak; on the other, the evolution of indicators has a direct influence on the content of public health policies. Although quantitative data are an absolute necessity for coping with such disasters, it is critical to bear in mind the inherent partiality and precarity of the information provided by health indicators. Given the growing importance of normative quantitative devices during the pandemic, and assuming that their influence is unlikely to decrease in the future, they call for close scrutiny.

There is little tolerance for deviation in time, budget and quality in the execution of product development projects. On the other hand, the project environment is gaining complexity. Changes on project scope are daily business. We set up an initial hypothesis, that unplanned changes -newness- has negative impact on projects. We developed and executed therefore a survey about factors belonging to innovation, complexity and newness to test their perceived impact on project success. Our data show a positive correlation between unsuccessful projects and newness, which is discussed in the paper.

This study explores the effects of time pressure in dexterous operations on two types of interface: the fixed interface and the moving interface. Results show that the accuracy of finger movement is decreased, the information processing on the sense of sequence, position and direction is worsened by the psychological disturbance. The findings indicate that a fixed interface is more robust to performance and participants can learn and perform tasks quicker than a moving interface. Finally, the researchers give some practices on both fixed and moving interface design.

Introduction: Competency-based medical education (CBME) affirms that trainees will receive timely assessments and effective feedback about their clinical performance, which has inevitably raised concerns about assessment burden. Therefore, we need ways of generating assessments that do not rely exclusively on faculty-produced reports. The main object of this research is to investigate how data already collected in the electronic health record (EHR) might be meaningfully and appropriately used for assessing emergency medicine (EM) trainees independent and interdependent clinical performance. This study represents the first step in exploring what EHR data might be utilized to monitor and assess trainees clinical performance Methods: Following constructivist grounded theory, individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 EM faculty and 11 EM trainees, across all postgraduate years, to identify EHR performance indicators that represent EM trainees independent and interdependent clinical actions and decisions. Participants were presented with a list of performance indicators and asked to comment on how valuable each would be in assessing trainee performance. Data analysis employed constant comparative inductive methods and occured throughout data collection. Results: Participants created, refined, and eliminated performance indicators. Our main result is a catalogue of clinical performance indicators, described by our participants, as reflecting independent and/or interdependent EM trainee performance that are believed to be captured within the EHR. Such independent indicators include: number of patients seen (according to CTAS levels), turnaround time between when a patient is signed up for and first orders are made, number of narcotics prescribed. Meanwhile, interdependent indicators include, but are not limited to, length of stay, bounce-back rates, ordering practices, and time to fluids. Conclusion: Our findings document a process for developing EM trainee report cards that incorporate the perspectives of clinical faculty and trainees. Our work has important implications for distinguishing between independent and interdependent clinical performance indicators.

Over the last decade, product/service systems (PSSs) have become a research issue in several disciplines, such as engineering design and marketing. The inherent interdisciplinary nature of this research issue has however remained unexploited. In order to bridge these silos and foster more interaction across relevant disciplines, this research examines PSSs from an interdisciplinary angle by analyzing how engineering design and marketing inform one another, as well as presents insights for PSS design. The research is carried out using a three-stage process for analyzing and evaluating interdisciplinary research: first, through a systematic literature review to identify relevant papers and their level of utilization across disciplines; second, by using a qualitative thematic analysis looking for different perspectives in order to find themes to bridge the gap between the disciplines; and third, by providing a research agenda to advance research by moving from silos to synergy. The results show a limited use of theories, frameworks, methods and tools across disciplines thus far, while the major contribution of this article lies in the implications derived for PSS design for academics and practitioners alike, which are categorized into seven specific themes: business orientation, collaboration, cost aspects, flexibility, performance indicators, requirements and services.
