Today’s water-treatment plants combine practices designed to cope individually with various types of purification challenges. In some cases, the solution to one has detrimental effects on others, e.g. disinfection by chlorination forming hazardous organic contaminants. Water-treatment plants have large ecological footprints and operational costs, making the availability of high-quality water in developing areas almost impossible, due to lack of resources and infrastructure. Indeed, >2 billion people are exposed to diseases caused by contaminated water. Clearly, bringing safe, clean drinking water to people’s homes is essential to a good quality of life. Clay minerals may offer technologies and innovative practices which would help to develop a reliable, low-maintenance device with a small environmental footprint that processes stream, lake, or pond water into high-quality potable water. The basis for such technologies has already been established and improved approaches are being introduced on an ongoing basis by clay scientists: nanocomposite pre-treatment and disinfection, photodegradation of organic pollutants using clay-based catalysts, polishing of inorganic contaminants, and removal of biological pathogens by adsorption or deactivation onto specifically designed clay-based filters, etc. This short review presents a vision for combining those technologies in a tandem system for the delivery of high-quality water that is low-maintenance, affordable, and environmentally sustainable for the benefit of mankind.

The intercalation of europium ions (Eu3+) into the interlayer space of a layered silicate, magadiite, was conducted by ion-exchange reactions between magadiite and europium(III) chloride. X-ray diffraction and elemental analysis results indicated that Eu3+ cations were intercalated into the interlayer space of magadiite. The ion exchange between Eu3+ and Na+ occurred preferentially so that the adsorbed Eu3+ amounts were controlled quantitatively. Thermal transformation of the original layered structure was suppressed by the intercalation of Eu3+. The resulting intercalation compounds exhibited photoluminescence arising from the intercalated Eu3+. The luminescence intensity varied in accordance with the amount of Eu3+ absorbed, suggesting that the self-quenching occurred at higher loading levels. The luminescence intensity was also changed by the heat treatment, corresponding to the change in the surroundings of the Eu3+ adsorbed, induced by the removal of the adsorbed water molecules and the hydroxyl groups of the silicate.

The immobilization of antimicrobial drugs can be used to expand the application of antibacterial properties to consumer products. The purpose of this study was to stabilize an antimicrobial agent, levofloxacin (LVX), for sustained antibacterial activity by immobilizing the drug molecules in a layered double hydroxide (LDH) and embedded in a polyurethane substrate. As-prepared MgAl-LDH was calcined at 400°C and reconstructed with LVX for intercalation. The X-ray diffraction patterns and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy images showed lattice expansion along the crystallographic c axis upon LVX intercalation, suggesting successful loading of the drug. Fourier-transform infrared spectra revealed that the structure of LVX was well preserved between LDH layers. Elemental analysis indicated that the loading capacity of LVX in the hybrid was 41.7%. Bacterial-colony forming inhibitory assay on Bacillus subtilis exhibited ~100% antibacterial activity of both LVX alone and LVX-LDH hybrid (LL). To determine sustainability of antibacterial activity by the hybrid, either LVX alone or LL hybrid was loaded in the polyurethane (PU) substrate for which antibacterial activity was evaluated before and after immersion in a phosphate-buffered saline for 3 days. The LVX-composited PU showed a dramatic decrease in antibacterial activity, down to 0% after buffer treatment; LL-composited PU still contained antibacterial activity (~34% of colony suppression) after phosphate-buffered saline immersion.

The intercalation of a saponite with the Al polycation [Al13(OH)24(H2O)24]15+ is described. This polycation is obtained by reaction of alumina with Al chloride. The intercalation is achieved by reaction of very concentrated solutions of this polycation with the clay in powder form. Solids with a basal spacing of 18.9 Å were obtained in this way, stable up to 700°C (17.0 Å). The Langmuir surface area of the intercalated solid was 366 m2/g, and that value decreases to 119, 138 and 125 m2/g for the solids pillared at 500, 600 and 700°C, respectively.

Enhancement of the physico-chemical properties of elastomers can be achieved by the addition of fillers, such as silica, but the search for less expensive alternative materials continues. The objective of this study was to investigate natural or organically modified clay minerals as such an alternative. Organo-clays modified by quaternary ammonium cations with three methyl groups and longest alkyl chains of different lengths were prepared by ion-exchange reaction of the commercial product JP A030 (Envigeo, Slovakia) based on Jelšový Potok bentonite with organic salts: tetramethylammonium (TMA) chloride, octyltrimethylammonium (OTMA) bromide, and octadecyltrimethylammonium (ODTMA) bromide. Physico-chemical characterizations of the organo-clays used as fillers in rubber nanocomposites and their mechanical properties were measured using Fourier transform infrared (IR) spectroscopy, which provided information on the chemical composition of the mineral and on the amount of organic moieties adsorbed. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) was used to monitor the arrangement of organic chains in galleries of montmorillonite and showed that the longest-chain alkylammonium ODTMA+ ions were intercalated between layers, adopting a pseudotrimolecular conformation, while OTMA+ and TMA+ were in monomolecular arrangement. Surface areas were measured by sorption of N2 and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether. Natural rubber-clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation, in some cases also with addition of silica, a conventional reinforcing filler. The microstructure of montmorillonite in these composites was characterized by XRD analysis. The effect of clay and organo-clays loading from 1 to 10 phr (parts by weight per hundred parts of rubber) on stress at break, strain at break, and Modulus 100 (M100) was investigated by tensile tests. Filler ODTMA-JP A030 appears to be the most effective among the organoclays; surprisingly similar values of composite elongation and strength were obtained with unmodified bentonite JP A030.

The presence of nitrate and other redox-active anionic contaminants in terrestrial ecosystems poses a significant risk to humans and other forms of life on Earth. The purpose of the present study was to test a potential in situ system, using poly-(D) glucosamine (chitosan) adsorbed to mineral surfaces under redox-active conditions in order to degrade nitrate to lower oxidation states. Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide derived from the chitin found in the shells of shrimp and other shellfish. Five different loadings of chitosan (0, 0.075, 0.25, 0.50, and 1.0 g/L; labeled C0, C1, C2, C3, and C4, respectively) were adsorbed to ferruginous smectite (SWa-1) to form chitosan-SWa-1 composites (CSC) in the pH range 5.8–4. The CSC was then reduced by Na2S2O4 in a citrate-bicarbonate buffered dispersion and washed free of excess salts under inert-atmosphere conditions. Upon addition of the nitrate, the solution pH remained slightly acidic, ranging from 5.5 to 4.7. Samples were analyzed for Fe(II) content, reacted with a NaNO3 solution, and then re-analyzed for structural Fe(II) content. Supernatant solutions were analyzed for nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium. In samples C1 to C4, extensive concentrations of nitrite were observed in the supernatants with a corresponding increase in the reoxidation of structural Fe(II), proving that a coupled redox reaction had occurred between the nitrate and the structural Fe in the clay mineral. The most efficient loading, defined as the largest percentage of adsorbed nitrate reduced to nitrite, occurred in sample C1. The total amount of nitrate reduced and Fe(II) reoxidized followed the trend 0 = C0 < C2 < C3 < C4 ≈ C1. Chitosan showed the potential to reverse the surface charge of constituent clay minerals, thereby enabling the CSC to remove nitrate anions from aqueous mineral systems via redox reactions with structural Fe(II) in clay minerals.

The main objective of the present work was to functionalize nanoclays with organosilanes and surfactant in order to facilitate the dispersion of the nanofillers in the host fluoroelastomer (FKM) polymer matrix. Better dispersion was achieved by improving interaction between the clay polymer nanocomposite (CPN) constituents. The first part of this study investigated modification of montmorillonite (Mnt) using different saturated and unsaturated alkyl silanes and an alkyl hydrocarbon ammonium quaternary surfactant. Silicon magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the silane-grafted clays. Results indicated that the amount of silane grafted depended on the specific structure of the silane. Silane-grafted Mnt was also modified with ionic surfactants intercalated between the clay layers. A 169% increase in the clay basal spacing (from initial spacing of 10.0 Å to 26.9 Å) was achieved. The second part of the study successfully synthesized FKM nanocomposites containing custom-functionalized Mnt, with the aim of producing reinforced high-performance materials. The effects of clay modification on the morphology and thermal properties of the CPN were studied using XRD, TGA, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The CPN made with the modified clay exhibited greater thermal stability than the CPN of the commercially available modified Mnt, with a degradation onset point ~ 40°C higher.

Integrating LiMn2O4(LMO) and different carbon materials to build a mixed cathode system can provide fast transport channels to improve the conduction of both electrons and ions. In this paper, our work studied in situ low-temperature hydrothermal synthesis of LMO nanocomposites based on graphene oxide (GO)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) hydrogel. Compared with the pure LMO nanoparticles, GO/CNTs/LMO (GCLMO) composites greatly improved electrochemical performance in specific capacity, cycle performance and rate ability. The electrochemical test results showed that the specific capacitance of GCLMO nanocomposites reached 396 F/g at the current density of 0.5 A/g, which was much higher than 221 F/g of pure LMO. Even at the current density of 10 A/g, the specific capacitance was still as high as 309 F/g. Besides, after 2000 cycles, the specific capacitance retention of the composite was 93%. Electrochemical data showed that GCLMO composite is an ideal cathode material for supercapacitors.

Due to side-effects and inefficiency of the drugs used in malaria treatment, finding alternative medicine with less side-effects has attracted much attention. In this regard, in the present study, nanocomposite synthesized and its effects on the metabolites of P. falciparum were investigated. Subsequent to synthesis of nanocomposites, characterization was carried out using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and Fourier-transform infrared tests. Solubility and drug release were measured and its toxicity on Vero cell was assessed using the MTT assay. The antiparasitic effect of the nanocomposite on the metabolites of P. falciparum was investigated by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Among synthesized nanocomposites, the average size of 239 nm showed suitable solubility in water as well as slow drug release. The MTT assay showed no toxicity for Vero cell lines. Concentrations of 2.5 μg mL−1 of nanocomposite eliminated 82.6% of the total parasites. The most effected metabolic cycles were glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism. In this study, 1H NMR spectroscopy was used with untargeted metabolomics to study the effect of the nanocomposite on P. falciparum. Playing an essential role in understanding drug-target interactions and characterization of mechanism of action or resistance exhibited by novel antiprotozoal drugs, can be achieved by targeting metabolic using LC-MS.

Iranian montmorillonite (MMT) was modified with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTB) and used as a nano-additive for the enhancement of the mechanical and anticorrosion properties of an epoxy coating. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that HDTB reacted with MMT (with 97% yield) and increased the d001 spacing of MMT from 1.27 to 3.92 nm. Some 1, 3 and 5 wt.% of organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) were added to the epoxy coating formulation. XRD and TEM/image processing analysis showed that the extent of intercalation/exfoliation of OMMT was substantially greater than that of MMT. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the glass transition temperature and storage modulus increased significantly with the addition of OMMT. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and salt spray/image processing results revealed that addition of OMMT to the epoxy coating significantly increased the corrosion resistance of the coating compared to neat and MMT-containing epoxy coatings. The optimum concentration of OMMT was 3 wt.%. At this concentration, the mechanical and anticorrosion properties were greatly superior to those of neat and MMT-containing epoxy coatings.

A low-temperature synthesis method for Mn3O4/graphene is described in this research. Adjusting the reaction time and temperature allows control over the phase and morphology of the synthesized manganese oxide, and therefore the microwave absorbing properties. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and vector network analysis are used to characterize the phase, morphology, and electromagnetic properties. The results reveal that long reaction time can increase the particle size and high temperature can destroy the initial structure of graphene both of which have negative impact on the microwave absorbing properties. The Mn3O4–graphene composite synthesized in 140 °C for 4 h shows a maximum reflection loss (RL) reaching −20 dB at 14.4 GHz with absorber thickness of 2 mm, as well as an effective absorption bandwidth of more than 5 dB corresponding to RL below −10 dB.

Intercalation of an ammonium amphiphile having an azobenzene chromophore, 4-dodecyloxy-4 ‘-(trimethylammoniopentyloxy)azobenzene and 4-(ω-trimethylammoniodecyloxy) -p’- (octyloxy)azobenzene bromide, into the layered silicate magadiite (ideal formula Na2Si14O29·nH2O) was carried out by a conventional ion exchange reaction in an aqueous medium. An intercalation compound with the ideal formula {(C12AzoC5N+)1.4H0.6·Si14O29·nH2O} was obtained. Based on the change in the basal spacing (to 4.21 nm) after the reaction and the visible absorption spectrum of the product, the intercalated azo dyes appear to form a J-aggregate in the interlayer space of magadiite. Under UV and visible light irradiation, the intercalated azo chromophore exhibited reversible transcis isomerization in the interlayer space of magadiite. This is the first successful report of photochemical reactions of guest species in the interlayer space of magadiite.

Melt blending using a twin-screw extruder was used to prepare composites of polypropylene (PP)/organic rectorite (PR). The organic rectorite (OREC) was modified with dodecyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium bromide (1227). Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the dispersion of OREC in the composites. The d spacings of OREC in PR composites was greater than in OREC itself. The dispersion of OREC particles in the PP polymer matrix was fine and uniform when the clay content was small (2 wt.%). The rheology was characterized using a capillary rheometer. The processing behaviour of the PR system improved as the amount of OREC added increased. Non-isothermal crystallization kinetics were analysed using differential scanning calorimetry. It was shown that the addition of OREC had a heterogeneous nucleation effect on PP, and can accelerate the crystallization. However, only when fine dispersion was achieved, and at lower rates of temperature decrease, was the crystallinity greater. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction and polarized light microscopy were used to observe the crystalline form and crystallite size. The PP in the PR composites exhibited an a-monoclinic crystal form, as in pure PP, and in both cases a spherulite structure was observed. However, the smaller spherulite size in the PR systems indicated that addition of OREC can reduce the crystal size significantly, which might improve the ‘toughness’ of the PP. The mechanical properties (tensile and impact strength) improved when the amount of OREC added was appropriate. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the storage modulus (E′) and loss modulus (E″) of the nanocomposites were somewhat greater than those of pure PP when an appropriate amount of OREC was added. Finally, thermogravimetric analysis showed that the PR systems exhibited a greater thermal stability than was seen with pure PP.

Calcium phosphate derivatives have been widely employed in medical and dental applications for hard tissue repair, as they are the main inorganic constitution of hard tissue; such as bones and teeth. Owing to their excellent osteoconductive and bioactive properties, hydroxyapatite- (HA) based ceramics are the best candidates of this group for medical, bioscience, and dental applications. However, when replacing a bone or tooth, HA is not able to sustain similar mechanical properties. In this study, to improve the mechanical properties, nanoscale hexagonal boron nitride with different compositional percentages was added to the nano HA to form composites. The effect of compositional changes and sintering parameters on microstructural and morphological properties of the ceramic composites was comparatively investigated. Detailed chemical characterization of the composite materials was carried out using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, whereas scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy investigations were employed to monitor morphological and surface features. Additional transmission electron microscopy investigations were carried out to reveal the nanostructure and crystal structure of the composites.

Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) was melt compounded with different nanoparticles using a twin-screw extruder. Nano TiO2, SiO2 and Al2O3 in 0.5, 1 and 2 wt% were added to the polymeric matrix as reinforcements. Nine polymeric nanocomposite samples were injection molded. Impact strength, Young's modulus, Rockwell hardness-R and cost of raw materials were considered as different criteria. Two procedures of multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods were performed for solving material selection problem. Criteria weighting was performed using analytical hierarchy process (AHP). According to weights that obtained from AHP, the alternative ranking was implemented using TOPSIS (the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution) and MOORA (multi-objective optimization on the basis of ratio analysis) methods. The results indicated that the addition of nanoparticles to the polymeric matrix was significantly improved mechanical properties. The results showed a 94% and 229% improvement in impact strength for PMMA containing 1 and 2 wt% TiO2 compared to pure PMMA. The results also revealed that hardness and Young's modulus of PMMA were increased by addition of different nanoparticles. The implementation of MCDM methods illustrated that PMMA-2 wt% TiO2 is the best alternative. Also, PMMA-1 wt% TiO2 and PMMA-2 wt% SiO2 are the next alternatives, respectively.

2-D graphene nanosheets (GNS) not only have superior mechanical properties, but stacking of GNS in composites is expected to inhibit moisture absorption. In this paper, moisture effect on tensile strength of graphene/epoxy nanocomposites is investigated. Two kinds of graphene reinforcements are used including graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with reinforcement weight fraction WGO or WRGO in the range of 0.5 to 3.0wt%. A dispersion agent acetone is added in nanocomposites to enhance graphene dispersion. To evaluate moisture influence, those nanocomposites are soaked in two kinds of liquid including deionized water (DIW) and salt water (saline solution) for seven kinds of soaking periods of time including 24, 48, 72, 100, 400 hours, 30 days, and 60 days. After soaking test, diffusion coefficients of various composites are evaluated; besides tensile strengths of composites are measured by microforce testing machine. In order to correlate the strength with microstructure evolution, several techniques are adopted to analyze morphologies and functionalities of reinforcements and fracture surface of composites. They include Raman spectroscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, and SEM. 2-D GNS are found to effectively enhance nanocomposites by moisture attack, and their corresponding reinforcing mechanisms are proposed.

The dispersion of carbon nanotubes is one of the problems in the application of polymer nanocomposites. In this study, the effect of chemical functionalization of the carbon nanotube surface on the dispersion of the tubes within a polymer is reported. The effect of carbon nanotube weight loading on the properties of polymer membrane was also studied. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes were dispersed in Nafion® matrix by melt processing techniques to form nanocomposite membranes. The morphology, dc electrical conductivity, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and proton conductivity of these nanocomposites were investigated. Nitric acid functionalized carbon nanotubes were evenly dispersed with Nafion as observed by scanning electron microscopy. The measurements of mechanical properties indicate that this processing method and carbon nanotube loading can improve the modulus of the nanocomposites.

In the present research, the microstructures and mechanical properties of Al–Si–Cu alloy matrix composites reinforced with nanosized alumina (Al2O3) and zirconia (ZrO2) were investigated. For this purpose, Al2O3 particulates were replaced with different wt% of ZrO2 to improve microstructure and mechanical properties. The T6 heat treatment was also performed to investigate mechanical properties in heat-treated condition. Tensile testing, hardness measurement, optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope examination were used to characterize the behavior of composite and matrix. The highest tensile strength was achieved in the specimen containing 1.25 wt% ZrO2 and 0.75 wt% Al2O3, which shows an increase to 36% in comparison with the nonreinforced base alloy. The hardness values indicated 11% increase following the heat treatment. Fracture surface examinations revealed a transition from ductile fracture mode in as-cast aluminum alloy to rather brittle in Al–Si–Cu alloy matrix hybrid composites.

We have investigated the microstructure, the quasistatic and high-rate mechanical properties of magnesium (Mg)-based metal-matrix composites (MMCs) reinforced with nanoparticles, also termed as metal-matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs), in this case reinforced with nanoparticles of β-phase silicon carbide (β-SiC) the volume fraction ranging from 5 to 15 vol%. The yield and the ultimate strength increase with reinforcement volume fraction up to 10 vol% nanoparticles. MMCs with micrometer-sized SiC particles have higher yield strength than their MMNC counterparts, whereas the ultimate strength shows the opposing trend, suggesting greater strain hardening in the MMNCs. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the average interparticle distance decreases with increasing SiC vol%. Recrystallization was reported as completed during sintering at 575 °C [R.D. Doherty et al., Mater. Sci. Eng. A, 238, 219 (1997)], but dislocations might be generated due to thermal expansion mismatch of Mg/SiC during cooling. The majority of Mg-grains below 20 nm remain around the nanoparticles. As such a reverse volume fraction effect takes place in 15 vol% nanoparticle-reinforced MMNCs, which off sets the strengthening advantage induced by the nanoparticles.
