This paper explores the concept of 'playables,' defined as tangible objects intentionally designed for immersive play, distinct from traditional utilitarian objects. It delves into how playables, unlike everyday items, transcend functionality, fostering creativity and curiosity in immersive play. It explores how playables differ from acknowledged design principles, drawing upon Dieter Rams and Don Norman. By recognizing the need for distinct design perspectives for playables, the paper contributes to unlocking their potential to enable wonder in immersive play experiences.

The graphical user interface was introduced to democratize access to computer systems by simplifying hardware and visual interfaces. Technological advancements further reduced the constraints, primarily benefiting the mainstream users. However, the specialized needs of the critical users have always been neglected. This paper delves into the ergonomics of the mouse pointer and the computer mouse, focusing on left-handed computer users as a critical user category to develop and propose a universal design solution to integrate left-handers as a mainstream user category in a computer interface.

Virtual reality plays an increasingly important role in design education. However, a holistic view, starting with the didactic concept, the selection of a VR tool suitable for the learning task and a final reflective evaluation of the learning experience, rarely takes place. In this paper, the authors present an approach for a VR didactics toolkit that covers and takes into account all three points as a whole. The application and research environment here was the bachelor's degree module Ergonomics and Industrial Design at the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences.

Inertial motion capture has garnered considerable attention within the manufacturing industry for ergonomic assessments due to high reliability and fewer constraints compared to alternative posture tracking direct measurement tools. However, these wearable systems, while ensuring reliability and precision in the results, also introduce a degree of invasiveness. Hence, user experience becomes an important aspect for design and development of such systems. This paper reveals major user experience issues resulting from an experimental study for promoting user-centred design of wearable systems.

Many designs are “driven” by requirements that describe maximum or minimum values of high- variability variables that must be considered. In ergonomics, minima and maxima of anthropometric variables like body height shape the design of a product. Similarly, in structural design, the highest environmental loads that can be expected during the lifetime of a product drive the design. Consequently, a wide range of methods that help designers deal with extreme requirement values has been developed. In this paper, we review these methods and propose a model for the process of dealing with extreme requirement values. The model comprises two broad stages. In the first stage, requirement values are statistically defined and in the second stage, a design is synthesized and evaluated against the requirement values. Throughout the paper, we use two examples: the design of an ergonomic chair and of an offshore wind turbine. We focus on how requirement values are defined for these two products and how they are used throughout the design process. Although these products are vastly different, both are designed by statistically deriving requirement values and then systematically designing against these values.

This article investigates human geometry in design, allowing exploration of unknown geometries in Paralympic sports equipment. By creating a configuration map exploring the solution-space, optimal sit-ski seating positions–in the sense of performance and ergonomics–can efficiently be found for individual athletes. A physical prototype was developed, and an experiment was designed to identify changes in performance due to different geometries. The design method and application make it possible to translate critical angles onto geometries, and test individuals for optimal work ergonomics.

Through optimal design of the human machine interfaces, especially the hand-handle contact surface, high usability of hand-operated products can be achieved. The complexity of the user specific hand anthropometry has to be considered in the design of load transfer handles. Use case optimized, personalized, and adaptively morphing handles aim at fulfilling this requirement. To identify design parameters for adaptive handles an experimental design for systematic analysis of user and use case requirements is proposed and evaluated showing the potential of adaptive handles.

This paper presents an interview study aiming to understand the state of the art of how ergonomics designers work in the vehicle development process within the Swedish automotive industry. Ten ergonomic designers from seven different companies participated in the interview study. Results report the ergonomics designers' objectives, workflow, tools, challenges, and ideal work performance tool. We identify four main gaps and research directions that can enhance the current challenges: human behavior predictions, simulation tool usability, ergonomics evaluations, and integration between systems.

Standards IEC 62288:2014 and MSC.191(79) require information on the displays of shipboard navigation systems to be logically grouped, but only provide limited specification for this ‘logical’ criterion. Meanwhile, complex interfaces and information overload remain as major design issues, being connected to several maritime accidents. To address this matter, a three-phase study was conducted to develop a pattern to organise essential information on Radar and Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) displays and their equivalent modules on integrated navigation systems and integrated bridge systems. The first phase involved identifying the information most essential for safe navigation using cognitive task analyses, equipment performance standards and frequency of use. The second phase involved a card-sorting experiment with seafarers (n = 63) to develop an initial grouping pattern for the identified essential information. The third phase involved validating the initial grouping pattern with a new sample of seafarers (n = 35). The result is a pattern to group 48 types of information on shipboard navigation displays into 13 groups. The paper details the selected methods and the findings, and provides implications for future research.

Investigating the underlying predictors of speeding behaviour deserves the full attention of research. This study aims to examine the effects of demographic variables on the perceived deterrent mechanisms and to predict speeding behaviour to target appropriate prevention programmes. In this study, 212 randomly selected drivers having a valid car driving licence participated in an online survey. The results revealed that demographic variables influenced drivers’ perceptions towards social and legal sanctions as well as material loss. The model revealed that two sanction-related constructs, that is, legal sanction (b = −0⋅227, P = 0⋅007) and material loss (b = −0⋅218, P = 0⋅005), as well as lax perception towards traffic accident (b = −0⋅176, P = 0⋅025), were the significant predictors of speeding behaviour. These findings suggested that prevention programmes should prioritise young and single drivers. The most effective targeted prevention programmes are highlighted accordingly based on the study results.

The latest advances in the design of vehicles with the adaptive level of automation pose new challenges in the vehicle-driver interaction. Safety requirements underline the need to explore optimal cockpit architectures with regard to driver cognitive and perceptual workload, eyes-off-the-road time and situation awareness. We propose to integrate existing task analysis approaches into system architecture evaluation for the early-stage design optimization. We built the discrete-event simulation tool and applied it within the multi-sensory (sight, sound, touch) cockpit design industrial project.

This paper outlines the results of a project to develop and test an augmented reality smart phone application (‘app’) to aid the safety of navigation of leisure sailors with limited navigational skills. The app works in two modes: in the ‘turned off mode’ the app gives an alarm 30 seconds before the boat is predicted to ground. The navigator then immediately stops the boat, picks up the phone and, uses the app to view the surrounding water where NoGo areas less than 3 metres in depth are outlined in red. By panning the smart phone around, safe escape routes with deep water are visible. The prototype app was tested on a group of boat owners in western Norway with very good results, both from technical and usability perspectives. This report outlines the concept of operation of the app, details some of the difficulties encountered in its development and testing, specifies the issues that remain to be resolved to turn the concept into an effective system, and outlines future development plans.

Since the 1990s, the number of websites and web users, especially older users, has increased extensively. Despite the rapid growth in the number of websites, a significant number of ergonomic violations still hinder the information search activity performed by web users. As ageing is associated with reduced working memory capacity, inhibition failure, slowing of processing speed and more generally impaired executive functioning, older adult web users may experience difficulties while searching for information, especially when the website includes ergonomic violations, such as usability and accessibility violations. In this experiment, the navigation activities of younger and older web users were compared while they were searching for information on a website that met ergonomic guidelines and on a website that included ergonomic violations. The participants then performed a free, delayed-recall task to assess their mental representation of the website they had just navigated. The main findings showed that ageing had a negative impact on search performance but few effects on mental representation built by participants. On the contrary, the ergonomic quality of the website had an impact on search performance and mental representation built by the participants.

La division production nucléaire (DPN) d’EDF est une grande utilisatrice de contrôles radiographiques industriels : de l’ordre de 40 000 contrôles sont réalisés annuellement sur le parc nucléaire pour la réalisation d’examens non-destructifs (END). Les sources ponctuelles d’iridium-192 sont le plus souvent utilisées. L’activité de ces sources peut aller, dans des configurations usuelles, jusqu’à 4,4 TBq (120 Ci), induisant un débit d’équivalent de dose de l’ordre de 0,54 Sv h–1 à 1 mètre. À cette distance, la valeur de 20 mSv (limite annuelle pour les travailleurs) est atteinte en un peu plus de 2 minutes. Ce jour, aucun dépassement des limites réglementaires n’a été observé à la DPN EDF, mais dans le cadre de l’observation des évènements, pratiquée depuis de nombreuses années, des « signaux faibles », ainsi que des expositions non prévues inférieures aux limites réglementaires ont été notés. La direction de la DPN a donc décidé de mener des actions particulières dans le domaine.

Virtual reality shows to be of use in several domains of manufacturing as a complementary tool to CAD/CAM environment. Design review is one of the very first application of VR in product design, but assembly/disassembly studies are also existing though they require some more specific work. But it can also be useful beyond the scope of common CAD software such as ergonomic studies. We will show an example from the RNTL PERF-RV project where we study the ergonomics of a car dashboard and more specifically of a push-button. We will discuss the issues raised by studying ergonomics thanks to Virtual Reality and force-feedback systems which are both hardware and software.
