Freehand sketching meets a vital need in design for fluid, fast and flexible visual representations that designers build off of and learn from. Sketching more frequently during the design process correlates with positive design outcomes. Engineering designers receive minimal training on freehand sketching, and engineering students do not apply freehand sketching well during the design process. This study examines some of the underlying factors associated with using sketching more frequently. We examine how sketching skills, spatial visualization skills, sketching instruction and engineering design self-efficacy influence designers’ self-reported sketching behavior. We find that higher sketching skills are associated with using sketching in a variety of ways, and spatial visualization skills and design self-efficacy are associated with sketching more frequently. The relationships uncovered were emphasized by their longevity: spatial skills and sketching skills in students’ first semesters predicted sketching more frequently in a senior capstone design course. These long-lasting relationships suggest the need to invest in students’ spatial skills and sketching skills early in the degree program so that they can be leveraged for better design practice.

The design of gear boxes is a complex challenge characterized by conflicting requirements and seemingly circular dependencies. Existing tools support engineers but focus on a single predefined design, often leading to costly iterative processes and non-optimal solutions. Solution Space Engineering (SSE) alleviates this by generating multiple designs represented by solution spaces. For this, a particular model structure is needed, and thus restructuring existing models, e.g., from industry standards. The application of solution spaces to a two-stage gear box is presented.

The aim of this study is to identify: (a) challenges in understanding and using design methods, and (b) features expected in an enhanced repository of design methods, by design students. These are identified through interviews and a survey. The major findings are (a) less (time for) practice leads to weak understanding and challenges in using design methods and (b) students expect to have a method recommendation system based on problem context. The findings from this study will guide in developing a user-centric, enhanced repository of design methods to aid design practice and pedagogy.

The global elderly population rises, increasing dementia cases. Built environment impact on dementia health outcomes is known, forming the basis for evidence-based design studies. There's a need for a comprehensive assessment framework due to the complexity of interactions among Architectural Variables (AVs) and Health and Care Outcomes (HCOs). This paper proposes using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to create such a framework. It collects data from 105 studies on 40 AVs, 36 HCOs, and 396 interactions. MBSE offers a holistic understanding, aiding healthcare facility design decisions.

Abstract product development models, such as the Integrated Product Engineering Model (iPeM), are insightful yet complex, hindering practical application. The paper introduces a prototypical tool designed to simplify the application of iPeM. A case study at CERN showcases the tool's capability in utilizing the iPeM to streamline the tailoring of standards into methodologies for research environments. The tool's impact is evaluated through interviews at CERN. The findings suggest the tool's benefits, especially for individuals without formal project management backgrounds.

Design hackathons offer a unique research opportunity to study time-pressured collaborative design. At the same time, research on design hackathons faces unique methodological challenges, prompting the exploration of new research approaches. This paper proposes a new data-collection framework that leverages a virtual format of hackathon events and enables a deeper insight into hackathon dynamics. The framework applicability is presented through a case study of the IDEA challenge hackathon, in which different intrusive and non-intrusive data collection approaches were used.

Education for Sustainable Development requires raising individuals' awareness of problems relevant to the environment. We designed a Generative Toolkit that supports industrial design students carrying out a Speculative Design task and through this process initiates greater problem awareness of low metal recycling rates. In this paper we give insights into the Toolkit's theoretical derivation and the design process. Findings from testing suggest that there are several opportunities for improvement, such as considering further content-related competencies in the Toolkit's design.

To achieve higher functionality in mechatronic systems, the management of disturbance factors plays a crucial role. For this purpose, a method was developed in prior works to address this management via the optimisation of product structures. However, this method lacks applicability due to the complexity of one step of the method. It is the goal of this paper to present a software tool, utilizing cluster-analysis to sort components into assemblies, with which this step is supported. Additionally, the method is generally adapted to address a wider spectrum of phenomena in mechatronic systems.

The emotional experiences significantly impact students' design processes. This research presents the EmotionProbe, a design probe tool for capturing design students' emotions while designing. The tool allows simple data collection, offering important insights into the students' design experiences, introducing the spectrum of emotions that design students go through, and showcasing various analysis approaches, allowing for a richer understanding of the design's emotional dimension. The research highlights the need for an emotional tool supporting students' emotional well-being while designing.

The study explores the affordances of CO:RE Cards in prompting collaborative dialogues surrounding R&D and innovation among creative industry practitioners. The use of CO:RE Cards was evaluated in three sessions within a collaborative dialogue environment. It was analysed that they have prompted the building of a collective language and understanding among creative practitioners through collaborative knowledge construction and mutual learning. We discuss the potentially significant role of CO:RE Cards in nurturing a Community of Practice (CoP) for innovation in the creative industries.

Software implementations of traditional engineering design methods can potentially enrich the original methods. A study was conducted to better understand how concept generation can be facilitated using software. Participants of the study were asked to generate concepts using either specialized software, or by using traditional means, for applying function-means modeling and morphological matrices. A concept concretization metric was used to evaluate the results, which indicated that there are both positive and negative aspects of performing concept generation using specialized software.

Developments in artificial intelligence (AI) are opening the possibilities for the development of more advanced design tools. An example of these innovations are generative design tools, in which the generation of complex and high performing products is possible. This study investigates the use of generative design tools and how they may influence the design process and designer behaviour. Six interviews of interdisciplinary designers were conducted to understand the implications of using generative design tools. It was observed that generative design tools primarily allow for quantitative inputs to the tool while qualitative metrics, such as aesthetics, are considered indirectly by designers. The subjectivity of the designer and how they incorporate the quantitative and qualitative metrics in the generative design tool can lead to differing outcomes between designers. Notable differences in tool usage are also observed between expert and novice computational designers. Additional studies should be conducted to further understand the extent generative design tools impact the design process, designer behaviour, and design outcomes.

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the research and development of hybrid airships for various applications. Airship design involves multiple design parameters from various disciplines that interact mutually. Existing design methodologies, however, are often limited to fixed shapes and geometry. This paper provides a comprehensive parametric design approach for the sizing of multi-lobed hybrid air vehicles for low- and high-altitude applications. The proposed design techniques are robust so that the designer has the freedom to change the number of lobes, the relative location of lobes, the envelope profile, and the optimiser for the design optimisation process. The outcomes of the proposed methodology are envelope volume, wetted surface area, length and span of the envelope, sizing and layout of the solar array, and sizing and layout of the fins. The modeling techniques highlighted in this paper are very efficient for the design and optimisation of multi-lobed airships in the conceptual design phase with a large design exploration space. The robustness of the shape generation algorithms is tested on some of the standard envelope profiles of airships. The effect of the shape and geometry of the multi-lobed envelope on added mass is demonstrated through the added mass estimation using Boundary Element Method.

Designing accessible and inclusive buildings is essential if they are to provide enjoyable and inspiring experiences for all their occupants. Research revealed that many architectural design professionals perceive a lack of awareness of the aspects to consider when designing to be a limiting factor in the uptake of Inclusive Design. By involving expert stakeholders this study provides evidence for the demand to create an Inclusive Design Canvas, a strategic design template offering an educational springboard for building industry professionals to embed Inclusive Design in the design process.

Prototyping uses many models over its process, with varying strength and weakness offered by those in the physical vs digital domains. Working across domains is necessary but introduces a transition cost, process complexities, and risks lost learning. Drawing from Digital Twinning, this work explores the creation of integrated physical-digital prototyping workflows, where technology enables simultaneous cross-domain working. It contrasts four case-study implementations of integrated prototyping workflow to current practice, exploring feasibility, value, and implementation challenges.

Prototypes are a critical aid in the product development process, allowing designers translate concepts to reality. However, the execution of prototypes depends heavily on the designer experience, evidenced in research in the need of creating design support tools to establish a standard for a prototyping effort. To improve on these findings, the Proto-Arch is introduced as a partial result of creating a standard for executing prototypes in each product development phase based on the prototyping roles and purposes. Proto-Arch defines the prototyping activities in the embodiment design phase.

Collaboration is common practice within design disciplines and beyond. Brainstorming, discussions, and prototyping tend to occur within the same physical space. The reduction of human interaction during the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted these practices. In this paper, we focus on the possibilities and challenges of remote prototyping of four student teams by combining a double diamond approach with tools to overcome remote work challenges. The results were analyzed to understand crucial tools, advantages, and obstacles. The key challenges and opportunities were then identified and examined.

This work aims to study the evolution of the “Human and planet balance tool” as part of Prosperity Thinking. Prosperity Thinking is a sustainable design methodology that takes into account human and planet means. Through a literature review on sustainable design, we noticed that there is a lack of methods that take into account the problem definition stage. We developed a “Human and planet balance tool” which helps framing sustainable design challenges. Results show that designers, innovators, and changemakers have an interest in a methodology to analyze and address systemic challenges.

Multi-functional design has high potential to overcome e.g. increasing weight and costs of products. However, the possible solution space for integrating functions is hardly manageable. This paper presents an approach to assist in the identification of multi-functional approaches. Therefore, hybrid design principles are developed that are combinable to complex structures including specific manufacturing routes. By this, multi-functional solutions can be provided on different resolutions in order to identify the most promising approach and position for the integration of additional functions.

The use of serious games is more and more popular in the medical filed, mainly for home-based rehabilitation therapy. In this context, some design principles were already proposed. Designing serious game for evolution diseases assessment is challenging and necessitates a new approach of this principles. Working with physiotherapists at the origin of the Motor Function Measurement assessment scale, the development of a dedicated serious game is proposed based on new contextual principles.
