We give a new proof of a theorem of Bell and Coons [‘Transcendence tests for Mahler functions’, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 145(3) (2017), 1061–1070] on the leading order radial asymptotics of Mahler functions that are the generating functions of regular sequences. Our method allows us to provide a description of the oscillations whose existence was shown by Bell and Coons. This extends very recent results of Poulet and Rivoal [‘Radial behavior of Mahler functions’, Int. J. Number Theory, to appear].

We consider the existence problem of meromorphic solutions of the Fermat-type difference equation

$$ \begin{align*} f(z)^p+f(z+c)^q=h(z), \end{align*} $$

where $p,q$ are positive integers, and h has few zeros and poles in the sense that $N(r,h) + N(r,1/h) = S(r,h)$. As a particular case, we consider $h=e^g$, where g is an entire function. Additionally, we briefly discuss the case where h is small with respect to f in the standard sense $T(r,h)=S(r,f)$.

We consider an analogue of Kontsevich’s matrix Airy function where the cubic potential $\textrm{Tr}(\Phi^3)$ is replaced by a quartic term $\textrm{Tr}\!\left(\Phi^4\right)$ . Cumulants of the resulting measure are known to decompose into cycle types for which a recursive system of equations can be established. We develop a new, purely algebraic geometrical solution strategy for the two initial equations of the recursion, based on properties of Cauchy matrices. These structures led in subsequent work to the discovery that the quartic analogue of the Kontsevich model obeys blobbed topological recursion.

We estimate the linear independence measures for the values of a class of Mahler functions of degrees 1 and 2. For this purpose, we study the determinants of suitable Hermite–Padé approximation polynomials. Based on the non-vanishing property of these determinants, we apply the functional equations to get an infinite sequence of approximations that is used to produce the linear independence measures.

In this note, we prove a uniqueness theorem for finite-order meromorphic solutions to a class of difference equations of Malmquist type. Such solutions $f$ are uniquely determined by their poles and the zeros of $f-e_{j}$ (counting multiplicities) for two finite complex numbers $e_{1}\neq e_{2}$.

We show that if the pair $(f,g)$ of functions mapping a linear space $X$ over the field $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{R}\text{ or }\mathbb{C}$ into $\mathbb{K}$ satisfies the composite equation

This paper considers algebraic independence and hypertranscendence of functions satisfying Mahler-type functional equations $af(z^{r})=f(z)+R(z)$, where $a$ is a nonzero complex number, $r$ an integer greater than 1, and $R(z)$ a rational function. Well-known results from the scope of Mahler’s method then imply algebraic independence over the rationals of the values of these functions at algebraic points. As an application, algebraic independence results on reciprocal sums of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers are obtained.

Let $\sigma$ be a continuous involution of $G$. In this paper, we are concerned by the following functional equation

where $f,g,h:G\mapsto \mathbb{C}$, to be determined, are complex continuous functions on $G$ such that $f$ is central. This equation generalizes d’Alembert's and Wilson's functional equations. We show that the solutions are expressed by means of characters of irreducible, continuous and unitary representations of the group $G$.
