We present preliminary results of the Gemini/GMOS longslit spectra for four radiogalaxies: 3C 135, 3C 180, 3C 234 and 3C 284. These objects are a subsample of a set of galaxies with noticeable extended structure selected from the HST/WFPC2 3CR Snapshot Survey, data taken with the filters F555W, F702W and narrow-ramp. All of these objects show large regions of [Oiii]λ5007 emission (narrow ramp filter) and the broad-band filters data show similar structures indicating the presence of strong emission in several lines over these regions. The morphology observed seems to be related (e.g. same position angle, direct overlapping or similar shape) with the radio-jet. For some candidates with these properties GMOS/Gemini spectroscopy was taken. These data (both HST direct imaging and Gemini spectroscopy) can be tested with diagnostic diagrams and total UV photons budget to understand the source of energy that is ionizing the gas. This source of ionization was commonly believed to be the UV photons emitted by the powerful AGN, but several of these objects shows clearly that shocks produce by the radio jet are the main cause of the observed gas line emission.

The stellar and wind properties of the new population of massive stars in the central parsec of the Galaxy are derived through quantitative analysis with atmosphere models.

We discuss prospects of using multi-dimensional time-dependent simulations to study the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets, including the processes of convection, radiation, dust formation, and rotation. We argue that reasonably realistic simulations are feasible, however, separated into two classes of local and global models. Numerical challenges are related to potentially large dynamic ranges, and the treatment of scattering of radiation in multi-D geometries.

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is currently by far the most ambitious proposed ground-based optical survey. With initial funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories, and private sponsors, the design and development efforts are well underway at many institutions, including top universities and national laboratories. Solar System mapping is one of the four key scientific design drivers, with emphasis on efficient Near-Earth Object (NEO) and Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) detection, orbit determination, and characterization. The LSST system will be sited at Cerro Pachon in northern Chile. In a continuous observing campaign of pairs of 15 s exposures of its 3,200 megapixel camera, LSST will cover the entire available sky every three nights in two photometric bands to a depth of V=25 per visit (two exposures), with exquisitely accurate astrometry and photometry. Over the proposed survey lifetime of 10 years, each sky location would be visited about 1000 times, with the total exposure time of 8 hours distributed over several broad photometric bandpasses. The baseline design satisfies strong constraints on the cadence of observations mandated by PHAs such as closely spaced pairs of observations to link different detections and short exposures to avoid trailing losses. Due to frequent repeat visits LSST will effectively provide its own follow-up to derive orbits for detected moving objects.

Detailed modeling of LSST operations, incorporating real historical weather and seeing data from Cerro Pachon, shows that LSST using its baseline design cadence could find 90% of the PHAs with diameters larger than 250 m, and 75% of those greater than 140 m within ten years. However, by optimizing sky coverage, the ongoing simulations suggest that the LSST system, with its first light in 2013, can reach the Congressional mandate of cataloging 90% of PHAs larger than 140m by 2020. In addition to detecting, tracking, and determining orbits for these PHAs, LSST will also provide valuable data on their physical and chemical characteristics (accurate color and variability measurements), constraining PHA properties relevant for risk mitigation strategies. In order to fulfill the Congressional mandate, a survey with an etendue of at least several hundred m2deg2, and a sophisticated and robust data processing system is required. It is fortunate that the same hardware, software and cadence requirements are driven by science unrelated to NEOs: LSST reaches the threshold where different science drivers and different agencies (NSF, DOE and NASA) can work together to efficiently achieve seemingly disjoint, but deeply connected, goals.

We present a model for the prediction of the optical/infra-red emission from ULXs. In the model, ULXs are binary systems with accretion taking place through Roche lobe overflow. We show that irradiation effects and presence of an accretion disk significantly modify the optical/infrared flux compared to single stars, and also that the system orientation is important. We include additional constraints from the mass transfer rate to constrain the parameters of the donor star, and to a lesser extent the mass of the BH. We apply the model to fit photometric data for several ULX counterparts. We find that most donor stars are of spectral type B and are older and less massive than reported elsewhere, but that no late-type donors are admissible. The degeneracy of the acceptable parameter space will be significantly reduced with observations over a wider spectral range, and if time-resolved data become available.

This paper outlines the main features of the International Schools for Young Astronomers (ISYA), a programme developed by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1967. The main goal of this programme is to support astronomy in developing countries by organizing a school lasting 3 weeks for students with typically a M.Sc. degree. The context in which the ISYA were developed has changed drastically over the past 10 years. We have moved from a time when access to any large telescope was difficult and mainly organized on a national basis, to the situation nowadays where data archives are established at the same time that any major telescope, ground-based or in space, is built, and these archives are accessible from everywhere. The concept of the virtual observatory reinforces this access. However, the rapid development of information and communications technologies and the increasing penetration of internet have not yet removed all barriers to data access. The role of the ISYA is addressed in this context.

Star clusters are observed to form in a highly compact state and with low star-formation efficiencies, and only 10 per cent of all clusters appear to survive to middle- and old-dynamical age. If the residual gas is expelled on a dynamical time the clusters disrupt. Massive clusters may then feed a hot kinematical stellar component into their host-galaxy's field population thereby thickening galactic disks, a process that theories of galaxy formation and evolution need to accommodate. If the gas-evacuation time-scale depends on cluster mass, then a power-law embedded-cluster mass function may transform within a few dozen Myr to a mass function with a turnover near 105M, thereby possibly explaining this universal empirical feature. Discordant empirical evidence on the mass function of star clusters leads to the insight that the physical processes shaping early cluster evolution remain an issue of cutting-edge research.

The determinations of element abundances in red-giant stars and in particular in AGB stars are reviewed and the resulting abundances are compared with those obtained for planetary nebulae in the Galaxy and in nearby galaxies. The problems, possibilities and implications of such comparisons when estimating yields from low-mass and intermediate-mass stars are illustrated and commented on.

In 2005 we obtained very precise interferometric measurements of the pole-on rapid rotator Vega (A0 V) with the longest baselines of the Center for High Angular Angular Resolution (CHARA) Array and the Fiber Linked Unit for Optical Recombination (FLUOR). For the analysis of these data, we developed a code for mapping sophisticated PHOENIX model atmospheres on to the surface of rotationally distorted stars described by a Roche-von Zeipel formalism. Given a set of input parameters for a star or binary pair, this code predicts the interferometric visibility, spectral energy distribution and high-resolution line spectrum expected for the system. For the gravity-darkened Vega, our model provides a very good match to the K-band interferometric data, a good match to the spectral energy distribution – except below 160 nm – and a rather poor match to weak lines in the high dispersion spectrum where the model appears overly gravity darkened. In 2006, we used the CHARA Array and FLUOR to obtain high precision measurements of the massive, non-eclipsing, double-line spectroscopic binary Spica, a 4-day period system where both components are gravity darkened rapid rotators. These data supplement recent data obtained with the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI). Our study follows the classic 1971 study by Herbison-Evans et al. who resolved Spica as a binary with the Narrabri Stellar Intensity Interferometer (NSII). We will report on our progress modeling the new interferometric and archival spectroscopic data, with the goal towards better constraining the apsidal constant.

We discuss the potential contribution of the Discovery Channel Telescope (or a clone) to a detection program aimed at discovering 90% of potentially hazardous objects (PHOs) larger than 140 m in diameter. Three options are described, each involving different levels of investment. We believe that LSST, Pan-STARRS, and DCT, working in a coordinated fashion, offer a cost-effective, low-risk way to accomplish the objectives of the extended NEO search program.

The Cartwheel is one of the most outstanding examples of a dynamically perturbed galaxy where star formation is occurring inside the ring–like structure. In previous studies with Chandra, we detected 16 Ultra Luminous X-ray sources lying along the southern portion of the ring. Their Luminosity Function is consistent with them being in the high luminosity tail of the High Mass X-ray Binaries distribution, but with one exception: source N.10. This source, detected with Chandra at LX = 1 × 1041 erg s−1, is among the brightest non–nuclear sources ever seen in external galaxies. Recently, we have observed the Cartwheel with XMM-Newton in two epochs, six months apart. After having been at its brightest for at least 4 years, the source has dimmed by at least a factor of two between the two observations. This fact implies that the source is compact in nature. Given its extreme isotropic luminosity, there is the possibility that the source hosts an accreting intermediate–mass black hole. Other sources in the ring vary in flux between the different datasets. We discuss our findings in the context of ULX models.

We review the structural properties of giant extragalactic HII regions and HII galaxies based on two dimensional hydrodynamic calculations, and propose an evolutionary sequence that accounts for their observed detailed structure. The model assumes a massive and young stellar cluster surrounded by a large collection of clouds. These are thus exposed to the most important star-formation feedback mechanisms: photoionization and the cluster wind. The models show how the two feedback mechanisms compete with each other in the disruption of clouds and lead to two different hydrodynamic solutions: The storage of clouds into a long lasting ragged shell that inhibits the expansion of the thermalized wind, and the steady filtering of the shocked wind gas through channels carved within the cloud stratum that results into the creation of large-scale superbubbles. Both solutions are here claimed to be concurrently at work in giant HII regions and HII galaxies, causing their detailed inner structure.

We present a novel approach for simultaneous extraction of stellar population parameters and internal kinematics from the spectra integrated along a line of sight. We fit a template spectrum into an observed one in a pixel space using a non-linear χ2 minimization in the multidimensional parameter space, including characteristics of the line-of-sight velocity distribution (LOSVD) and parametrized star formation history (SFH). Our technique has been applied to IFU and multi-object spectroscopy of low-luminosity early type galaxies.

In this paper, I discuss some aspects of the design of undergraduate and graduate astronomy curricula, broadly defined, for developing countries. A fundamental requirement is to develop students' ability and desire to learn, both in university and beyond. I then discuss several aspects of the curriculum: (i) The programme of coursework in astronomy and related topics such as physics and mathematics; (ii) The associated practical and project work to develop skills as well as knowledge; (iii) Linking the coursework, effectively, to various aspects of research; (iv) Development of general academic and professional skills such as oral and written communication, teaching, planning and management, and the ability to function as part of an interdisciplinary team; and (v) Orientation to the culture of the university and to the science and the profession of astronomy.

To accomplish all of these goals may seem daunting, especially as many of them are not achieved in the most affluent universities. But much can be gained by recognizing that there are well-established “best practices” in education, achieved through formal education research, reflection, and experience. Simple resources, effectively used, can be superior to the highest technology, used without careful thought. It is often best to do a few things well; “less can be more”. And effective partnership, both within the local university and with the outside astronomical community, can also contribute to success.

The massive-star IMF is found to be invariable. However, integrated IMFs probably depend on galactic mass.

In this paper, we apply the general theory of Arnold (1965, 1966) and Moffatt et al. (1997). We search sufficient conditions for the linear stability of steady three-dimensional incompressible gravitating flows in ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The results suggest that the solar and the stellar convection zones must be sensitive to the density stratification.

Convection theories for star and planet formation studies have to be (1) simple, to allow a self-consistent solution with other relevant processes, (2) time-dependent, because convection often starts in collapse-flows, and (3) robust, i.e. physically well-behaved under a wide range of conditions ranging from the quiet protoplanetary nebula to supercritical protostellar accretion-shocks with Mach-numbers of a few hundred. I describe how the equations of radiation fluid-dynamics can be augmented by a one-equation convection model in order to construct a system of equations that contains the Sun, brown dwarfs and planets as well as their nearly isothermal parent-clouds. The system of equations is calibrated to the Sun and tested by the solar convection zone and the pulsations of RR-Lyrae stars. I discuss the following applications: (1) star formation as the collapse of Bonnor-Ebert spheres of masses ranging from the stellar domain to the brown dwarf region, (2) the approach to the main sequence, (3) companion mass determinations for direct imaging searches for exoplanets, with GQ Lupi as an example, and (4) the formation of Pegasi-planets, and the “large core” exoplanet, HD 149 026, in particular.

Observations in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) have provided us with a useful set of data in the optical (COMBO-17), near-infrared (GOODS JHK), and mid-infrared (GOODS IRAC bands 1,2) wavelength regimes to test and improve a new spectral galaxy template library, designed to operate in the rest-frame wavelength range between 0.1 and 5 microns. In this range the stellar continuum and emission lines from HII regions dominate the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of galaxies. The new library is based on a self-consistent two-burst model, that has been developed in order to reproduce the star formation histories of different types of galaxies more accurately than single-burst histories and thus provides a better match to real galaxy spectra, as well as more reliable mass-to-light ratios. The spectral library is built by using a population synthesis code (PEGASE) assuming a Kroupa (2003) initial mass function. An old burst of exponentially decaying star formation with an initial metallicity of 0.1 solar is followed by a very recent (60 Myr old) second burst in order to reproduce the spectra of actively star forming blue galaxies. In addition, the templates include dust extinction of various strengths. For the multi-color classification the spectral library is red-shifted between z + 0 and z + 2.5 and converted into the 21 colors which have been observed by COMBO-17 plus its near- and mid-infrared extensions provided by the public GOODS data.

The study of photoionised gas in planetary nebulae (PNe) has played a major role achieving, over the years, a better understanding of a number of physical processes pertinent to a broader range of fields than just PNe studies, ranging from atomic physics to stellar evolution. Whilst empirical techniques are routinely employed for the analysis of the emission line spectra of such objects, the accurate interpretation of the observational data often requires the solution of the radiative transfer (RT) problem in the nebula, via the application of a photoionisation code. A number of large-scale codes have been developed since the late sixties, using various analytical or statistical techniques mainly under the assumption of spherical symmetry and a few in 3D. These codes have been proved to be powerful and in many cases essential tools, but a clear idea of the underlying physical processes and assumptions is necessary in order to avoid reaching misleading conclusions. The development of the codes has been driven by the observational constraints available, but also compromised by the available computer power. Modern codes are faster and more flexible, with the ultimate goal being the achievement of a description of the observations relying on the smallest number of parameters possible. In this light, recent developments have been focused on the inclusion of new atomic data, the inclusion of a realistic treatment for dust grains mixed in the ionised and photon dominated regions (PDRs) and the expansion of some codes to PDRs with the inclusion of chemical reaction networks. Furthermore the last few years have seen the development of fully 3D photoionisation codes based on the Monte Carlo method. A brief review of the photoionisation codes currently in use is given here, with emphasis on recent developments, including the expansion of the models to the 3D domain, the identification of new observational constraints and how these can be used to extract useful information from realistic models.
