Let E be a local field, i.e., a field which is complete with respect to a rank one discrete valuation υ (we do not require any finiteness condition on the residue class field of E). Let f(X) be a polynomial in one variable, with coefficients in E. It is well known [4, 6, 9, 11, 13] that the Newton polygon method allows us to gather information about the factorization of f(X). This method consists of attaching to each side S of a Newton polygon of f(X) a factor (not necessarily irreducible) of f(X), the degree of which is the length of the horizontal projection of S.

1. W. Blaschke's kinematic formula in the integral geometry of Euclidean n-dimensional space gives a weighted measure to the set of positions in which a mobile figure K1 overlaps a fixed figure K0. In the simplest case, K0 and K1 are compact convex sets and all positions are equally weighted; we give this in more detail. Let Wq denote the q-th Quermassintegral of K1: Steiner's formula for the volume V of the vector sum K1 + λB of K1 and a ball of radius λ defines these set functions by the equation

This paper is concerned with convex subsets of finite dimensional vtctor spaces, over the field of real scalars. As in [10, p. 244] and [20] we say that a compact convex set A, symmetric about the origin, is reducible, if there is a nonsymmetric closed convex set B for which A = B - B. The latter term denotes the set of all differences, {x-y: x, y є B}. Equivalently, A is reducible if, and only if, A =1/2 (B - B) for some B which is not a translate of A. If the identity A = B - B is only possible when B is centrally symmetric, then A is irreducible. If A is symmetric about a point other than the origin, we can say that it is (ir)reducible when it is the translate of an (ir)reducible set which is symmetric about the origin. It is well known that a parallelotope of any dimension is irreducible [6, Hilfssatz 3], that any 2-dimensional convex body other than a parallelogram is reducible [9, p. 217], and that euclidean balls of any dimension (other than one) are reducible [4, Ch. 7]. For more general convex bodies, the determination of reducibility is not a simple problem. Shephard [20] showed that a set is reducible if, and only if, it has an asymmetric summand, and he used this to study reducibility of polytopes. The main purpose of this paper is to give a new condition, necessary and sufficient for a symmetric polytope to be reducible. This condition may be expressed in the form: does a certain finite family of linear equations have a nontrivial solution? Thus, to determine the reducibility of a given polytope, it suffices to find the rank of some matrix. Using our criterion, we are able to describe some large families of irreducible polytopes. For example, every n- dimensional symmetric polytope with 4n – 2 or fewer vertices is irreducible (unless n = 2). We also establish the existence of irreducible, smooth, strictly convex bodies.

The study of similarity solutions of Prandtl's equations for the steady two dimensional flow of an incompressible fluid past a rigid wall leads to the equation

For its derivation we refer to Schlichting [6] here we merely note that the function f′(t) represents, after suitable normalization, the velocity parallel to the wall.

A study is made of Stokes flows in which a line rotlet or stokeslet is in the presence of a circular cylinder in a viscous fluid. In contrast to the Stokes Paradox for flow past an isolated cylinder, it is shown that if either type of singularity, with suitably chosen strength and location, is present, there can exist a flow which is uniform at infinity. A similar phenomenon can occur when two equal cylinders rotate with equal and opposite angular velocities, and the flow pattern is then such that there is a closed streamline enclosing both cylinders.

We prove that the log-Brunn–Minkowski inequality (log-BMI) for the Lebesgue measure in dimension $n$ would imply the log-BMI and, therefore, theB-conjecture for any even log-concave measure in dimension $n$ . As a consequence, we prove the log-BMI and the B-conjecture for any even log-concave measure in the plane. Moreover, we prove that the log-BMI reduces to the following: for each dimension $n$ , there is a density $f_{n}$ , which satisfies an integrability assumption, so that the log-BMI holds for parallelepipeds with parallel facets, for the density $f_{n}$ . As a byproduct of our methods, we study possible log-concavity of the function $t\mapsto |(K+_{p}\cdot ~\text{e}^{t}L)^{\circ }|$ , where $p\geqslant 1$ and $K$ , $L$ are symmetric convex bodies, which we are able to prove in some instances and, as a further application, we confirm the variance conjecture in a special class of convex bodies. Finally, we establish a non-trivial dual form of the log-BMI.

Some of the results can be extended to composite moduli and to sums of multiplicative characters as well. Character sums with the above sequences have some cryptographic motivation and applications and have been considered in several papers by J. B. Friedlander, D. Lieman and I. E. Shparlinski. In particular several previous bounds are generalized and improved.

Let ν be a valuation of any rank of a field K with value group Gν and f(X)= Xm + alXm−1 + … + am be a polynomial over K. In this paper, it is shown that if (ν(ai)/i)≥(ν(am)/m)>0 for l≤i≤m, and there does not exist any integer r>1 dividing m such that ν(am)/r∈Gν, then f(X) is irreducible over K. It is derived as a special case of a more general result proved here. It generalizes the usual Eisenstein Irreducibility Criterion and an Irreducibility Criterion due to Popescu and Zaharescu for discrete, rank-1 valued fields, (cf. [Journal of Number Theory, 52 (1995), 98–118]).

For the optimal approximation of convex bodies by inscribed or circumscribed polytopes there are precise asymptotic results with respect to different notions of distance. In this paper we derive some results on optimal approximation without restricting the polytopes to be inscribed or circumscribed.

It was proved recently by Roth that if α is any real algebraic number, and κ > 2, then the inequality

has only a finite number of solutions in integers h and q, where q > 0 and (h, q) = 1. This remarkable result answered finally a question which had been only partially answered by the work of Thue and Siegel.

In this paper a notion of difference function Δf is introduced for real-valued, non-negative and log-concave functions f defined in Rn. The difference function represents a functional analogue of the difference body K + (−K) of a convex body K. The main result is a sharp inequality which bounds the integral of Δf from above in terms of the integral of f. Equality conditions are characterized. The investigation is extended to an analogous notion of difference function for α-concave functions, with α < 0. In this case also an upper bound for the integral of the α-difference function of f in terms of the integral of f is proved. The bound is sharp in the case α = −∞ and in the one-dimensional case.

Using toroidal coordinates, an exact solution is derived for the velocity field induced in two immiscible semi-infinite fluids possessing a plane interface, by the slow rotation of an axially symmetric body partly immersed in each fluid. The surface of the body is assumed to be formed from two intersecting spheres, or a sphere and a circular disc, with the circle of intersection of the composite surfaces lying in th interface.

It is shown that when the rotating body possesses reflection symmetry about the plane of the interface of the fluids, the velocity field in either fluid is independent of the viscosities of the fluids. The torque exerted on the body is then proportional to the sum of the viscosities. Analytic closed-form expressions are derived for the torque when the body is either a sphere, a circular disc, or a tangent-sphere dumbbell, and for a hemisphere rotating in an infinite homogeneous fluid. Closed-form results are also given for an immersed sphere, tangent to a free surface. For other geometrical configurations, numerical values of the torque are provided for a variety of body shapes and two-fluid systems of various viscosity ratios.

In the author's paper [1] in which an exact solution is given to the Stokes equations for the steady motion without rotation of a rigid sphere through a viscous fluid in a direction parallel to and at an arbitrary distance d from a fixed plane, expressions were obtained for the forces and couples which are exerted on the sphere and the plane by the fluid. The forces were shown to be equal and opposite. The couple acting on the sphere was found to have Cartesian components (0, Gy, 0), when moments of the surface stress are taken about the centre of the sphere, where

The purpose of the study of Diophantine equations is to find out as much as one can about the rational solutions of a given indeterminate set of equations. In geometrical language, this is the investigation of the rational points on a given variety. The simplest type of problem for which no satisfactory theory is known is that of the cubic surface—the homogeneous cubic equation in four variables. Throughout this note we shall exclude the case of a cubic cone or cylinder, whose theory follows trivially from that of a cubic curve; however, we do not assume that the cubic surface is non-singular.

Let k be a knot of type K and with group πK. Let θ: nK → PSL(ℂ) = PSL (2, ℂ) be a parabolic representation (p-rep) as defined in [14]. We shall call the representation discrete when its image πKθ is a discrete subgroup of PSL(ℂ). It is known that PSL(ℂ) can be identified with the group of orientation preserving isometries of hyperbolic 3-space , and that each discrete subgroup of PSL(ℂ) acts discontinuously on . Hence each discrete p-rep θ has an associated orbit space . The present paper is a study of the general relations between the algebraic properties of a discrete image πKθ and the geometric properties of its orbit space.
