The autofocusing (AF) performance of cell phone cameras is critically dependent on the design of the voice-coil motor (VCM) used to drive the lens module. Also, the metal springs in the AF module should combine high stiffness with a good actuation response and a light weight. The present study utilizes a reverse engineering approach to construct three-dimensional finite element models of the top and bottom springs in the VCM mechanism. Simulations are then performed to investigate the von Mises stress distribution and stiffness characteristics of the two springs given horizontal and vertical orientations of the AF module, respectively. In performing the simulations, the actuation force is computed using two different analysis methods, namely a simplify structure method and a coupled electromagnetic-structural method. It is shown that the simplify structure method has the advantages of a lower computational complexity and a more comprehensive modeling capability. A further series of simulations is thus to examine the effects of the spring shape parameters on the reaction force developed by the spring stiffness. The results show that the spring stiffness increases with an increasing thickness and a decreasing rib length. The simulation results obtained for different spring shape parameter settings are summarized in the form of a parameter design chart for predicting the reaction force given known values of the spring rib length and spring thickness.

In recent years, nanostructures have been used in a vast number of applications, making the study of the mechanical behaviour of such structures important. In this paper, two different constitutive equations including first-order strain gradient and simplified differential non-local are employed to model the buckling behaviour of skew nanoplates. The Galerkin method is used for solving the equations in order to obtain buckling load. Using this method, the influence of different parameters consisting of non-classical properties, boundary conditions, and geometrical parameters such as length and angle on the buckling load, are studied. The results showed that small-scale effects are very important in skew graphene sheets and their inclusion results in smaller buckling loads.

This paper presents a tunable planar auxetic metamaterial (PAM) for controlling and filtering acoustic waves and provides guidelines for bandgap design of the proposed PAMs. Numerical results for deformed and undeformed PAMs were obtained from several finite element analyses based on Bloch–Floquet theory. The acoustic band structures of the PAMs were calculated with periodic boundaries. Tunable bandgaps in certain frequency ranges were generated by various deformations applied to the PAMs. Wave attenuation in experimental transmission loss at specific frequencies was demonstrated, showing favorable agreement with the bandgaps obtained from numerical calculations. Both the numerical and experimental results indicate that the proposed structure demonstrates great tunability and offers significant advantages over the regular materials for controlling sound wave propagation and filtering sound waves within specific frequency ranges.

In noise control, the reactance of a mechanical system needs to be minimized while the resistance is chosen suitably. This work illustrates the possibility of and the ease at which such design tasks may be accomplished by utilizing strong electromechanical coupling. Moving-coil loudspeaker is chosen as the vehicle of illustration and it is considered as a simple spring-mass system when operated below its first diaphragm mode. It is shown that the system mechanical property may be tuned easily by a simple R-LC circuit. In addition to the assigned resonance frequency, there can be a maximum of two other resonances. It is argued that the ability to tune the system mechanical resonance to any frequency, such as the ones at very low frequencies, can be very useful for noise and vibration control applications.

This study explored the target sound source location at unknown situation and processed the received signal to determine the location of the target, including the reconstructed signal of source immediately. In this paper, it used triangulation sound sources localization and time reversal method (TRM) to reconstruct the source signals. The purpose is to use a sound source localization method with a simple device to quickly locate the position of the sound source. This method uses the microphone array to measure signal from the target sound source. Then, the sound source location is calculated and is indicated by Cartesian coordinates. The sound source location is then used to evaluate free field impulse response function which can replace the impulse response function used in time-reversal method. This process reduces the computation time greatly which makes possible for a real time source localization and source signal separation.

A model of Twin-cell Composite Box Beam (TCCBB), which is composed of concrete plate and thin-walled steel box beam with twin-cell, is proposed in this paper. Combined with structural features, longitudinal interfacial slip mode (LISM) and related shear hysteresis functions (SHFS) of this TCCBB model are defined respectively; analytical formulation describing combination effect between interfacial slip and shear lag is launched for this TCCBB model under even load. Based on established governing differential equations and its relative boundary conditions (calculated with compatible mechanism of interfacial slip and shear lag effect), closed form solutions of normal stress and shear stress are derived for this TCCBB model, as well as effective shear-lag coefficient and effective coupled behavior coefficient. To obtain more accurate computational results of specific coupled mechanism of this TCCBB model, numerical example is carried out to analyze and predict coupled mechanism of interfacial slip and shear lag effect for this type of composite structures.

This work presents a new method to minimize artificial stiffness in linear tetrahedral element using virtual mesh refinement (VRM) method. The basic idea behind this work is to give additional degree of freedom by using internal mesh over the linear tetrahedral element. This local internal mesh and its corresponding equilibrium condition under particular boundary condition are invisible to users or virtual. Using specialized displacement test vectors, strain energy is obtained and used to calculate reduction factor for artificial stiffness. Numerical experiments are performed at the end to briefly qualitatively show performance of our proposed method.

The present study is to focus on the two dimensional problem of micropolar porous circular plate with three phase lag model within the context of two temperatures generalized thermoelasticity theory. The problem is solved by applying Laplace and Hankel transforms after using potential functions. The expressions of displacements, microrotation, volume fraction field, temperature distribution and stresses are obtained in the transformed domain. To show the utility of the approach, normal force and thermal source are taken. The numerical inversion techniques of transforms have been carried out in order to evaluate the resulting quantities in the physical domain. Finally, the resulting quantities are depicted graphically to show the effect of porosity, two temperatures and phase lags.

In the theory research and engineering practice, more basic inflatable models are essential for the mechanical property analysis of inflatable structures. Firstly, this paper presents a model of the tapered inflatable cantilever beam based on Timoshenko's theory and analyzes its deformation under a concentrated force. Moreover, the following forces resulting from internal pressure and taper ratio are introduced into the equilibrium equations of the deformed configuration. Thus, the model is optimized compared to the existing one for a straight beam. To verify the effectiveness and the superiority of the established model, the theoretical method based on the model and FEM method are compared by adopting an example about the tapered beams. Finally, the theoretical method is applied in analyzing the influence of geometry and estimating a valid range of taper ratio. By the criterion of the same amount material area, the optimum taper ratio is obtained.

Accurate prediction of the flow around multi-element airfoil is a prerequisite for improving aerodynamic performance, but its complex flow features impose high demands on turbulence modeling. In this work, delayed detached-eddy-simulation (DDES) and zonal detached-eddy-simulation (ZDES) was applied to simulate the flow past a three-element airfoil. To investigate the effects of numerical dissipation of spatial schemes, the third-order MUSCL and the fifth-order interpolation based on modified Roe scheme were implemented. From the comparisons between the calculations and the available experimental result, third-order MUSCL-Roe can provide satisfactory mean velocity profiles, but the excessive dissipation suppresses the velocity fluctuations level and eliminates the small-scale structures; DDES cannot reproduce the separation near the trailing edge of the flap which lead to the discrepancy in mean pressure coefficients, while ZDES result has better tally with the experiment.

The effect of sulcus vocalis on vocal folds function is investigated. A type II sulcus vocalis is defined, parameterized and incorporated into a three-dimensional, fully coupled finite element model of vocal folds and laryngeal airway. The proposed Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) model is utilized in computational fluid dynamics, Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE), incompressible continuity and Navier-Stokes equations and in a structure range of a three-layer elastic linear model. Flow parameters, vibration behavior and glottal jet aerodynamics of healthy and patient vocal folds models are compared with each other. Flow visualization is utilized to characterize Coanda effect and three dimensionality of flow patterns. The vibration frequency of vocal folds having sulcus vocalis decreases in comparison with that of healthy ones. Upon increasing the volume flux in the sulcus vocalis model, the non-periodic and disordered behavior of it is visible for patient vocal folds. Underlying mechanisms for the observed changes, possible implications for treatments of sulcus vocalis and human perfect voice production are also discussed.

Functionally graded material (FGM) has some particular characteristics due to the gradual variation of physical properties. The study on mechanical behavior of FGM is of great research value. In this work, a large scale FGM which filled with small glass spheres has been prepared by gravity assisted casting technique. The elastic material constants in static condition are measured. One optical experimental method, coherent gradient sensing (CGS), is introduced to study the mechanical behavior of FGM which has variation of material property in power-law. The governing equations of CGS which is used to represent the optics-mechanics relation of the singular field near the point of the outside force are derived based on the power-law asymptotic expansion. The experimental result shows this CGS method as a nondestructive methodology can be used to detect the damage in FGM with high accuracy.

A physics-based model of residual stress in minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) machining is presented. The stresses resulting from thermal and mechanical loading in the MQL machining process are coupled into an incremental thermal-elastic-plastic model for predicting the final resultant residual stress in the machined workpiece. Comparative analysis is made between the stresses produced by the thermal load and mechanical load in the machining process. Results manifest that for the surface of the machined workpiece, the stress produced by thermal load is on par with the contact stress produced by mechanical load in the magnitude. With the increase of depth into the workpiece, the stress produced by mechanical load is dominant of the total stresses. The rationale demonstrates that thermal load is prone to generate the tensile residual stress at the surface of the machined workpiece, while the mechanical load is prone to generate the compressive residual stress at the surface of the machined workpiece. Finally, the residual stress prediction model is verified by orthogonal cutting of AISI 4130 alloy steel.

The use of limiters may impact both accuracy and resolution of a solution. And the accuracy and resolution are highly dependent on the amount of numerical dissipation in a scheme, so the ability of limiters to control numerical dissipation should be improved. In this view, based on the examination of several classical limiters to control dissipation, a class of general piecewise-linear flux limiters (termed GPL limiters) are presented in this paper for Multi-step time-space-separated unsteady schemes. The GPL limiters can satisfy the second-order TVD criterion and contain some existing limiters such as Superbee and Minmod. Using the decrement of discrete total entropy to represent the amount of numerical dissipation, an entropy dissipation function of GPL limiters is defined with three parameter variables. By proving the monotonicity of this function, a new GPL type limiter (named MDF individually), which can minimize the numerical dissipation and improve the calculation accuracy, is proposed. A high resolution entropy-consistent scheme is obtained by MDF limiter, which will be proved to satisfy entropy stability and entropy consistency. Computational results of this scheme for several 1-D and 2-D Euler test cases are presented, demonstrating the accuracy, monotonicity and robustness of MDF limiter.

The problem of a circular elastic inclusion perfectly bonded to a matrix of infinite extent and subjected to arbitrarily thermal loading has been solved explicitly in terms of the corresponding homogeneous problem based on the inversion and Kelvin's transformation. It is to be noted that the relations established in this paper between the stress functions are algebraic and do not involve integration or solution of some other equations. Furthermore, the transformation leading from the solution for the homogeneous problem to that for the heterogeneous one is very simple, algebraic and universal in the sense of being independent of loading considered. The case of two bonded half-planes is obtained as a limiting case.

Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) was melt compounded with different nanoparticles using a twin-screw extruder. Nano TiO2, SiO2 and Al2O3 in 0.5, 1 and 2 wt% were added to the polymeric matrix as reinforcements. Nine polymeric nanocomposite samples were injection molded. Impact strength, Young's modulus, Rockwell hardness-R and cost of raw materials were considered as different criteria. Two procedures of multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods were performed for solving material selection problem. Criteria weighting was performed using analytical hierarchy process (AHP). According to weights that obtained from AHP, the alternative ranking was implemented using TOPSIS (the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution) and MOORA (multi-objective optimization on the basis of ratio analysis) methods. The results indicated that the addition of nanoparticles to the polymeric matrix was significantly improved mechanical properties. The results showed a 94% and 229% improvement in impact strength for PMMA containing 1 and 2 wt% TiO2 compared to pure PMMA. The results also revealed that hardness and Young's modulus of PMMA were increased by addition of different nanoparticles. The implementation of MCDM methods illustrated that PMMA-2 wt% TiO2 is the best alternative. Also, PMMA-1 wt% TiO2 and PMMA-2 wt% SiO2 are the next alternatives, respectively.

In this study, a micromechanics model has been proposed for predicting the effects of particle size and aggregation on elastic properties of nanocomposites, and the interphase between the particle and matrix is also taken into account. Inherent characteristics of nanoparticle, such as small size and high surface area ratio, make nanoparticle in a state of unstable energy and easy to agglomerate in matrix. The analytical expressions for the effective elastic modulus of nanocomposites are derived, which can consider the effect of particle agglomeration. The dispersion state or degree of agglomeration of nanoparticle and the thickness and stiffness of interphase are known to have a significant influence on nanocomposites. The results show that the increase of particle radius and agglomeration volume fractions reduces the elastic stiffness of nanocomposites. Moreover, the composite reinforcement can be improved by increases of interphase thickness and stiffness.

The strain gradient elasticity theory including only three independent material length scale parameters has been proposed by Zhou et al. to explain the size effect phenomena in micro scales. In this paper, the general formulations of strain gradient elasticity theory in orthogonal curvilinear coordinates are derived, and then are specified for the cylindrical and spherical coordinates for the convenience of applications in cases where orthogonal curvilinear coordinates are suitable. Two basic problems, one is the twist of a cylindrical bar and the other is the radial deformation of a solid sphere, are analyzed under the cylindrical and spherical coordinates, respectively. The results reveal that only the material length scale parameter l2 enters the torsion problem, while completely disappears in the problem of radial deformation of a sphere. The size effect of radial deformation of a solid sphere is controlled by the material length scale parameters l1 and l2. In addition, for the incompressible solid sphere especially, only the material length scale parameter l1 enters this radial deformation problem by neglecting the strain gradient terms associated with hydrostatic strains. Predictably, the present paper offers an alternative avenue for measuring the three independent material length scale parameters from bar twisting and sphere expansion tests.

This paper intends to study the dispersion and attenuation characteristics of Love-type wave propagation due to a disturbance point source in a hydrostatic stressed magneto-viscoelastic layer, lying over a heterogeneous fibre-reinforced elastic half-space. The shear elastic moduli and mass density of half-space are the functions of depth and heterogeneity parameters. The coupled field equations are solved with the aid of Green's function technique and Fourier transform. The dispersion and damping equations have been obtained for the wave. The deduced equations coincide with the classical Love-wave condition for the uniform homogeneous isotropic structure. Numerical computations are carried out for involved parameters and demonstrated with the help of graphs. The effects of hydrostatic stress, magnetic coupling parameter, dissipation factor, attenuation coefficient, reinforcement parameters, heterogeneity parameters and order of the depth variation on the dispersion and damping curves are highlighted.

As the consciousness of energy saving and carbon reduction and comfortable environment is paid increasing attention to, the common objective of various countries with decreasing energy is to develop and popularize high efficiency and low running noise blowers. This study uses CFD to calculate the flow field and performance of a blower and compare with the experimental measurement. The characteristic curve of blower shows that the simulated and experimental values are close to each other, the difference between the values is only 0.4%. This analysis result proofs the CFD package is a highly reliable tool for the future blower design improvement. In addition, this study discusses the noise distribution of blower flow field, the periodic pressure output value calculated by CFD is used in the sound source input of sound pressure field, so as to simulate and analyze the aerodynamic noise reading of the flow field around the blower. The result shows that the simulated value of flow field around the fan has as high as 80.5 dB(A) ∼ 81.5 dB(A) noise level and is agree with measurement (82 dB(A)). The noise level is low but has a sharp noise. According to the numerical results, designer of the blower modify the tongue geometry and remove the sharp noise.
