The linguistic landscape (LL) is emerging as a method by which to examine language practices of multilingual communities. Based on empirical research, carried out in Brittany and on Corsica in the summer of 2007, this project seeks to examine the extent to which two of France's regional heritage languages mark the public space. In categorising the signs recorded, it is possible to detect trends in the use of Breton and Corsican for different purposes within the LL. Given France's recent language management strategies, we are able to differentiate between the way in which cityscapes are marked by those in positions of authority and those with limited power. It is also practicable to examine the differences in multilingual signs within the survey areas. Collectively, these approaches to the LL of Brittany and Corsica will provide an overview of language practices and the relationships between these languages of France.

This article explores sociolinguistic variation in the use of French accents and diacritics—where they would be expected in the formal written language—in electronic personals posted on an Internet dating site. Results of a series of VARBRUL analyses show both age (i.e., 18–25 years vs. 36–45 years) and gender to be significant social variables in accent/diacritic variation. Three potential explanations of the variation are addressed: (i) the eventual loss of accents and diacritics in computer-mediated French, (ii) stable variation with differences between ‘digital natives’ and ‘digital immigrants’, and (iii) a change in progress whereby accents and diacritics are becoming ‘prestige variants’ in computer-mediated contexts.

Cet article porte sur les périphrases aspectuelles (commencer à, être en train de, etc.). On montre que si les grammaires divergent fortement à propos du statut lexical ou grammatical qu'il convient de leur accorder, il est néanmoins possible et pertinent de dissocier deux classes de périphrases, auxquelles on attribue un fonctionnement sémantique nettement différent. Les unes servent à construire un sous-procès, tandis que les autres indiquent un type de visée aspectuelle particulier. Cette analyse prend appui sur des études récentes (Kronning, François, Laca), qui montrent de façon indépendante, mais convergente, qu'il est nécessaire de dissocier deux classes de périphrases aspectuelles sur la base de leur comportement syntaxique.

The present study is a Labovian sociolinguistic analysis of forms used to express the future tense in the spoken French of adolescents residing in Ontario, Canada. Two primary variants are examined: a) the periphrastic future (e.g. elle va partir); and b) the inflected future (e.g. elle partira). The general trend that emerges is that distribution rates of the periphrastic future are markedly higher than previous accounts of the variable and that many speakers are in fact categorical users of the periphrastic form in certain contexts. Note, too, that negation is not a strong predictor for all speakers with respect to the choice of the inflected future, a finding that is in strong contrast to previous analyses of the variable in Laurentian varieties of spoken French in Canada. After presenting the general results, we provide an in-depth analysis of the linguistic and social factors that condition variant use.

Avec la notion d'anaphore ‘présuppositionnelle’, Milner (1982) présente la question de la coréférenciation des expressions complètes (descriptions définies complètes et noms propres) comme une affaire de connaissances extralinguistiques sur les référents. Pourtant, les exemples dans lesquels l'interprétation coréférentielle parvient à s’établir indépendamment de ce type de connaissances ne sont pas si rares. Le rôle des relations de cohérence est ici primordial, mais il l'est aussi pour l'interprétation des expressions incomplètes. L'originalité de l'anaphore présuppositionnelle est donc ailleurs: dans ses affinités avec une relation de cohérence particulière – la relation d’Elaboration – et l'association entre relations de cohérence et relations paratextuelles.

This article suggests a refinement of the link between dislocated constructions and the oral code. The research is based on an investigation of a mixed-medium corpus of contemporary French, including spoken language, journalistic prose and literary fiction. It is shown first that the form and function of dislocations vary according to the level of orality of the voice in which they are found: in particular, the intermediary nature of citations in newspaper articles is emphasised. It is then argued that the strict association of dislocation with the stylistic function of orality should be modified, since conveying orality does not always seem to be the primary motivation for dislocation.

Cet article défend l'hypothèse que le français (toutes zones géographiques confondues) présente aujourd'hui les propriétés caractérisant la situation diglossique, selon la définition classique de ce concept formulée par Ferguson (1959): la variété H est incarnée par la grammaire standard, et les variétés L par les grammaires appelées ici dialectales, activées par les locuteurs en situation informelle. Dans une optique générative de la grammaire, il est proposé de représenter la compétence linguistique des francophones par deux grammaires en intersection, schéma rendant compte de l'intuition que les deux algorithmes génèrent “la même langue”. L'article s'emploie à justifier pour le français l'hypothèse diglossique et la formalisation proposée, et à en explorer quelques avantages et implications pour la description et l'enseignement de cette langue.
