Time-lapse photography was used to examine the effects of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on the outgrowth and motility of neurites in cultures from mouse spinal cord. GABA at concentrations of 100, 10 and 1 μm caused significant inhibition of neurite outgrowth and the motility of growth cones was significantly reduced by treatment with 100 and 10 μm GABA. This effect was mimicked by the GABAB receptor agonist baclofen, whereas the GABAA receptor agonist muscimol had no effect. The effect of GABA on outgrowth and motility seems to be dependent on the type of serum employed. The results reported here were obtained only when heat-inactivated serum was used and not when non heat-inactivated serum was added to the culture medium. They suggest that GABA has a role in the regulation of process outgrowth within the embryonic mouse spinal cord.

Results obtained by the indirect zonal isotropic uniform random (IUR) estimation were compared with those obtained by the direct point and interception counting methods on vertical (VS) or IUR sections in a stereological study of bovine articular cartilage collagen fibrils at the ultrastructural level. Besides comparisons between the direct and indirect estimations (direct IUR vs indirect IUR estimations) and between different sampling methods (VS vs IUR sampling), simultaneous comparison of the 2 issues took place (direct VS vs indirect IUR estimation). Using the direct VS method, articular cartilage superficial zone collagen volume fraction (Vv 41%) was 67% and fibril surface density (Sv 0.030 nm2/nm3) 15% higher (P<0.05) than values obtained by the indirect IUR method (Vv 25% and Sv 0.026 nm2/nm3). The same was observed when the direct IUR method was used: collagen volume fraction (Vv 40%) was 63% and fibril surface density (Sv 0.032 nm2/nm3) 21% higher (P<0.05) than those obtained by the indirect IUR technique. Similarly, in the deep zone of articular cartilage direct VS and direct IUR methods gave 50 and 55% higher (P<0.05) collagen fibril volume fractions (Vv 43 and 44% vs 29%) and the direct IUR method 25% higher (P<0.05) fibril surface density values (Sv 0.025 vs 0.020 nm2/nm3) than the indirect IUR estimation. On theoretical grounds, scrutiny calculations, as well as earlier reports, it is concluded that the direct VS and direct IUR methods systematically overestimated the Vv and Sv of collagen fibrils. This bias was due to the overprojection which derives from the high section thickness in relation to collagen fibril diameter. On the other hand, factors that during estimation tend to underestimate Vv and Sv, such as profile overlapping and truncation (‘fuzzy’ profiles), seemed to cause less bias. As length density (Lv ) and collagen fibril diameter are minimally biased by the high relative section thickness, the indirect IUR method, based on utilisation of these estimates, is here regarded as representing a ‘gold standard’. The sensitivity of these 3 methods was also tested with cartilage from an in vitro loading experiment which caused tissue compression. In the superficial zone of articular cartilage Vv and Sv of collagen fibrils increased (P<0.05). This difference in the stereological estimates was only detected by the indirect IUR estimation but not by the direct VS or direct IUR methods. This indicated that the indirect IUR estimation was more sensitive than the direct VS or direct IUR estimations. On the basis of these observations, the indirect zonal IUR estimation can be regarded as the technique of choice in the electron microscopic stereology of cartilage collagen.

To guide surgery of nerves that traverse and surround the tympanic cavity in the rat, anatomical illustrations are required that are topographically correct. In this study, maps of this area are presented, extending from the superior cervical ganglion to the otic ganglion. They were derived from observations that were made during dissections using a ventral approach. Major blood vessels, bones, transected muscles of the tongue and neck and supra and infrahyoid muscles serve as landmarks in the illustrations. The course of the mandibular, facial, glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory and hypoglossal nerves with their branches, and components of the sympathetic system, are shown and discussed with reference to data available in the literature. Discrepancies in this literature can be clarified and new data are presented on the trajectories of several nerves. The course of the tympanic nerve was established. This nerve originates from the glossopharyngeal nerve, enters the tympanic cavity, crosses the promontory, passes the tensor tympani muscle dorsally, and continues its route intracranially to the otic ganglion as the lesser petrosal nerve after intersecting with the greater petrosal nerve. Auricular branches of the glossopharyngeal and of the vagus nerve were noted. We also observed a pterygopalatine branch of the internal carotid nerve, that penetrates the tympanic cavity and courses across the promontory.

Previous studies have shown that chronic administration of oestrogen during postnatal rat development dramatically reduces the total content of noradrenaline in the uterine horn, abolishes myometrial noradrenergic innervation and reduces noradrenaline-fluorescence intensity of intrauterine perivascular nerve fibres. In the present study we analysed if this response is due to a direct and selective effect of oestrogen on the uterine noradrenaline-containing sympathetic nerves, using the in oculo transplantation method. Small pieces of myometrium from prepubertal rats were transplanted into the anterior eye chamber of adult ovariectomised host rats. The effect of systemic chronic oestrogen treatment on the reinnervation of the transplants by noradrenaline-containing sympathetic fibres from the superior cervical ganglion was analysed on cryostat tissue sections processed by the glyoxylic acid technique. In addition, the innervation of the host iris was assessed histochemically and biochemically. The histology of the transplants and irises was examined in toluidine blue-stained semithin sections. These studies showed that after 5 wk in oculo, the overall size of the oestrogen-treated transplants was substantially larger than controls, and histology showed that this change was related to an increase in the size and number of smooth muscle cells within the transplant. Chronic oestrogen treatment did not provoke trophic changes in the irideal muscle. Histochemistry showed that control transplants had a rich noradrenergic innervation, associated with both myometrium and blood vessels. Conversely, in oestrogen-treated transplants only occasional fibres were recognised, showing a reduced NA fluorescence intensity. No changes in the pattern and density of innervation or in the total content of noradrenaline of the host irises were detected after chronic exposure to oestrogen. We interpreted these results to indicate that the effects of oestrogen on uterine noradrenaline-containing sympathetic nerves are neither selective or direct, but result from an interaction between sympathetic nerve fibres with the oestradiol-primed uterine tissue. A potential effect of oestrogen on the neurotrophic capacity of the uterus is discussed.

Microtubules are important for the growth and maintenance of stable neuronal processes and their organisation is controlled partly by microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). MAP 1B is the first MAP to be expressed in neurons and plays an important role in neurite outgrowth. MAP 1B is phosphorylated at multiple sites and it is believed that the function of the protein is regulated by its phosphorylation state. We have shown that the monoclonal antibody (mAb) RT97, which recognises phosphorylated epitopes on neurofilament proteins, fetal tau, and on Alzheimer's paired helical filament-tau, also recognises a developmentally regulated phosphorylation epitope on MAP 1B. In the rat cerebellum, Western blot analysis shows that mAb RT97 recognises the upper band of the MAP 1B doublet and that the amount of this epitope peaks very early postnatally and decreases with increasing age so that it is absent in the adult, despite the continued expression of MAP 1B in the adult. We confirmed that mAb RT97 binds to MAP 1B by showing that it recognises MAP 1B immunoprecipitated from postnatal rat cerebellum using polyclonal antibodies to recombinant MAP 1B proteins. We established that the RT97 epitope on MAP 1B is phosphorylated by showing that antibody binding was abolished by alkaline phosphatase treatment of immunoblots. Epitope mapping experiments suggest that the mAb RT97 site on MAP 1B is near the N-terminus of the molecule. Despite our immunoblotting data, immunostaining of sections of postnatal rat cerebellum with mAb RT97 shows a staining pattern typical of neurofilaments with no apparent staining of MAP 1B. For instance, basket cell axons and axons in the granule cell layer and white matter stained, whereas parallel fibres did not. These results suggest that the MAP 1B epitope is masked or lost under the immunocytochemical conditions in which the cerebellar sections are prepared. The upper band of the MAP 1B doublet is believed to be predominantly phosphorylated by proline-directed protein kinases (PDPKs). PDPKs are also good candidates for phosphorylating neurofilament proteins and tau and therefore we postulate that the sites recognised by RT97 on these neuronal cytoskeletal proteins may be phosphorylated by similar kinases. Important goals are to determine the precise location of the RT97 epitope on MAP 1B and the kinase responsible.

Sympathetic nerves to the enlarged fetus-containing region of the uterus undergo degenerative changes during late pregnancy and show slow regrowth after parturition. It is not known whether this unusual response of sympathetic nerves to smooth muscle hypertrophy is due to the sensitivity of short adrenergic neurons to hormonal changes, or whether the nerves respond to changes in the neurotrophic capacity of the target. We have investigated this question using in oculo transplantation. Small pieces of myometrium from the uterine horn of virgin guinea pigs, or from the region previously occupied by the placenta and fetus in postpartum guinea pigs, were transplanted into the anterior eye chamber. After 3 wk in oculo, the pattern of reinnervation of the transplants was assessed on whole mount stretch preparations stained for tyrosine hydroxylase. The histology of the transplants was examined in toluidine blue-stained semithin sections. Myometrial transplants from virgin donors and uterine artery transplants from both virgin and postpartum donors became organotypically reinnervated by sympathetic fibres from the host iris. In contrast, sympathetic nerves did not reinnervate myometrial transplants from postpartum donors, although they approached the transplants and became distributed in the surrounding connective tissue. All transplanted tissues showed a normal histological appearance. Both the myometrium and uterine artery from postpartum donors retained a hypertrophic appearance after 3 wk in oculo. We interpret these results to indicate that the degeneration of sympathetic nerves in late pregnancy, as well as their slow regrowth to the uterus after delivery, may be due to changes in uterine smooth muscle rather than a particular sensitivity of short adrenergic neurons to hormonal changes.

Pancreata of fetal, neonatal and adult cattle were studied immunohistochemically for galanin. The results revealed galanin-like immunoreactivity both in the endocrine cells and in the neural elements. The galanin-like immunoreactive endocrine cells (Gal-LIEC) were confined to the large islets, and were not observed in the islets of Langerhans and exocrine pancreas. They were first detected at the third prenatal month. Their developmental profile showed an increase from fetal to early neonatal stage with a subsequent decrease towards adulthood. The considerable number of Gal-LIEC from late prepartum to early postpartum stage may imply functional significance of galanin during the perinatal development of cattle. Coexistence of galanin and insulin was also observed which may suggest autocrine interaction between the 2 hormones.

The AS/AGU rat provides an alternative to experimentally produced laboratory models of basal ganglia disorders. This mutant is characterised by disturbances of movement including clumsy gait, whole body tremor, rigidity and difficulty in initiating movement. From an early age, there is a profound depletion of extracellular dopamine in the dorsal caudate-putamen as measured via in vivo microdialysis; levels are only 10–20% of those found in the parent Albino Swiss (AS) strain. Subsequently a depletion of whole tissue dopamine levels occurs and, later still, loss of dopaminergic cells in the substantia nigra pars compacta. The dysfunction in movement and the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system are clearly linked, since movement can be ameliorated by L-DOPA administration. Furthermore, there are depletions in glucose utilisation in several regions of the basal ganglia circuitry, including the substantia nigra pars compacta, the subthalamic nucleus and the ventrolateral thalamus. The AS/AGU rat represents a unique opportunity to investigate the intrinsic factors controlling the integrity of dopaminergic systems and the recent successful positional cloning of the agu gene will allow the molecular mechanisms underlying this interesting phenotype to be analysed.

Major variations of the principal arteries of the upper limb have long received the attention of anatomists. These variations can be summarised as the presence of 2 main arteries traversing the cubital fossa, a deep (or normal) brachial artery in coexistence with a superficial brachial, radial or ulnar artery. Anastomosis between these arterial trunks at elbow level has been reported in 1–6% of cases as an incidental finding in studies on the major arterial variations of the upper limb (Quain, 1844; Müller, 1903; Poynter, 1922; Adachi, 1928; McCormack et al. 1953; Wankoff, 1962; Rodríguez-Baeza et al. 1995). Only a single report (Ljubomudroff, 1927) has dealt specifically with the anastomosis.

The anatomical pattern of the anastomosis has been classified into 2 or 3 types depending on different morphological details. Three types have been described, taking into account its length, calibre and form (Quain, 1844) or the positions of the origin and number of recurrent radial arteries (Ljubomudroff, 1927). Two types have been described on the basis of whether the anastomosis coursed anterior or posterior to the bicipital tendon (McCormack et al. 1953). The aim of this study was to revisit these specific morphological details in a statistically reliable sample in order to catalogue the variations of the anastomosis and to provide an embryological explanation.

In 17 adult and 3 full term fetuses the hip joints were dissected to expose the insertion of gluteus minimus. An attachment of the deep surface of the tendon as it passes over the hip joint capsule was found in every case. Histological examination of this insertion confirmed the presence of short intramuscular tendons firmly anchoring the tendon to the capsule. It is suggested that this attachment retracts the capsule during hip joint motion, thereby preventing capsular entrapment.

Previous quantitative descriptions of cellular ultrastructure have focused on spatial content (volume, surface area and number of organelles and membrane domains). It is possible to complement such descriptions by also quantifying spatial arrangements. Hitherto, applications of stereological methods for achieving this (notably, estimation of covariance and pair correlation functions) have been confined to organ and tissue levels. This study explores 3-dimensional subcellular arrangements of key organelles within acinar cells of rabbit parotid salivary glands, highly polarised epithelial cells specialised for exocrine secretion of α-amylase. It focuses on spatial arrangements of secretion product stores (zymogen granules), rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and mitochondria. Systematic random samples of electron microscopical fields of view from 3 rabbits were analysed using test grids bearing linear dipole probes of different sizes. Unbiased estimates of organelle volume densities were obtained by point counting and estimates of covariance and pair correlation functions by dipole counting. Plots of pair correlation functions against dipole length identified spatial arrangement differences between organelle types. Volumes within RER and mitochondrial compartments were positively correlated with themselves at distances below 4 μm and 2 μm respectively but were essentially randomly arranged at longer distances. In sharp contrast, zymogen granules were not randomly arranged. They were clustered at distances below 6–7 μm and more widely scattered at greater distances. These findings provide quantitative confirmation of the polarised arrangement of zymogen granules within acinar cells and further support for the relative invariance of biological organisation between subjects.

The mammalian neuromuscular junction has been extensively studied by different methods to understand better the biological aspects of its normal development, ageing and pathological conditions, such as disorders of neuromuscular transmission. In the present report, a new technique is described that combines confocal microscopy with the use of a vital nerve terminal dye (4-Di-2-ASP) and rhodamine-alpha-bungarotoxin to stain postsynaptic acetylcholine receptors in the same endplate. Nerve terminals in the sternomastoid muscles of living adult mice were stained with 4-Di-2-ASP, which labels intracellular compartments of the nerve terminal containing mitochondria. Slides of these muscles were viewed by confocal microscopy and images were stored on magnetic optical discs. This procedure was compatible with subsequent acetylcholine receptor staining with rhodamine-α-bungarotoxin and observation under the confocal microscope. Classical features of the adult neuromuscular junction were displayed, such as the branched-pattern distribution of the nerve terminals and receptors and their complete colocalisation. In addition, nerve fibres from intramuscular nerve branches with their neighbouring cells, nuclei and muscle fibre striations could also be visualised. We conclude that the present technique can complement existing methods of investigation of nerve terminal anatomy and pathology, particularly where preservation of 3-dimensional relationships is required and intracellular disturbances involving mitochondrial organisation, such as ageing or other degenerative disorders, may be present.

The internal vascular system of vertebral bodies was investigated in 17–24 wk human fetuses by acrylic dye injection and by corrosion casting/scanning electron microscopy. The regions of intervertebral spaces did not contain blood vessels. The radial metaphyseal vessels were at the stage of centripetal ingrowth into the vertebral body cartilage and their terminal, blindly ending segments had a form of cuff-like capillary plexuses. The anterolateral equatorial arteries communicating with the vessels of the ossification centre were only rarely found. The centre was usually supplied by 2 posterior (nutrient) arteries which branched into an arcade-like array of arterioles equipped with occasional sphincters and giving origin to a dense network of peripherally located capillaries. Numerous blind capillary buds formed the advancing border of the ossification centre. The veins usually accompanied the arteries. In the ossification centre the venous compartment consisted of sinuses drained by larger posterior veins. In the 17 wk fetus, an axial avascular area was observed in the place of notochord localisation, indicating the formation of a ring-shaped ossification centre around the notochord remnants at earlier stages of fetal development.

There is evidence that the endothelial cell (EC) glycocalyx is a significant determinant of vascular permeability, acting as a charge-size filter to permeant molecules. We have therefore examined its oligosaccharide composition in 3 classes of microvessel with differing permeabilities. EC in rat brain, retina and myocardium were labelled with a panel of lectins and subjected to a semiquantitative analysis. Surprisingly, no substantial differences were evident for any lectin labelling between the 3 microvessel types despite their marked morphophysiological diversity. In particular, all showed substantial sialic acid expression, with Maackia amurensis (MAA) labelling sialic acid in an α2–3 linkage to β-galactose and Sambucus nigra (SNA) recognising sialic acid in an α2–6 linkage to β-galactose. Arachis hypogaea (PNA) binding after neuraminidase digestion indicated the presence of Gal β1–3GalNAc attached to terminal sialic acid. The results therefore show that the sequences NeuNAc α2–3Gal β1–3GalNAc and NeuNAc α2–6Gal β1–3GalNAc are strongly expressed in the 3 microvessel types irrespective of their permeability properties. This homogeneity suggests that these lectin ligands may be involved in a common set of EC functions, e.g. cell[ratio ]cell and cell[ratio ]matrix interactions. However, we cannot rule out the possibility that glycocalyx differences may exist between vessels in the paracellular cleft which may alter its filtration properties.

We rely on fossils for the interpretation of more than 95% of our evolutionary history. Fieldwork resulting in the recovery of fresh fossil evidence is an important component of reconstructing human evolutionary history, but advances can also be made by extracting additional evidence for the existing fossil record, and by improving the methods used to interpret the fossil evidence. This review shows how information from imaging and dental microstructure has contributed to improving our understanding of the hominin fossil record. It also surveys recent advances in the use of the fossil record for phylogenetic inference.

Tammar wallaby spermatozoa undergo maturation during transit through the epididymis. This maturation differs from that seen in eutherian mammals because in addition to biochemical and functional maturation there are also major changes in morphology, in particular formation of the condensed acrosome and reorientation of the sperm head and tail. Of spermatozoa released from the testes, 83% had a large immature acrosome. By the time spermatozoa reached the proximal cauda epididymis 100% of sperm had condensed acrosomes. Similarly 86% of testicular spermatozoa had immature thumb tack or T shape head-tail orientation while only 2% retained this immature morphology in the corpus epididymis. This maturation is very similar to that reported for the common brush tail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula. However, morphological maturation occurred earlier in epididymal transit in the tammar wallaby. By the time spermatozoa had reached the proximal cauda epididymis no spermatozoa had an immature acrosome and thumbtack orientation. Associated with acrosomal maturation was an increase in acrosomal thiols and the formation of disulphides which presumably account for the unusual stability of the wallaby sperm acrosome. The development of motility and progressive motility of tammar wallaby spermatozoa is similar to that of other marsupials and eutherian mammals. Spermatozoa are immotile in the testes and the percentage of motile spermatozoa and the strength of their motility increases during epididymal transit. During passage through the caput and corpus epididymis, spermatozoa first became weakly motile in the proximal caput and then increasingly progressively motile through the corpus epididymis. Tammar wallaby spermatozoa collected from the proximal cauda epididymis had motility not different from ejaculated spermatozoa. Ultrastructural studies indicated that acrosomal condensation involved a complex infolding of the immature acrosome. At spermiation the acrosome of tammar wallaby spermatozoa was a relatively large flat or concave disc which projected laterally and anteriorly beyond the limits of the nucleus. During transit of the epididymal caput and proximal corpus the lateral projections folded inwards to form a cup like structure the sides of which eventually met and fused. The cavity produced by this fusion was lost as the acrosome condensed to its mature form as a small button-like structure contained within the depression on the anterior end of the nucleus. During this process the dorsal surface of the immature acrosome and its outer acrosomal membrane and overlying plasma membrane were engulfed into the acrosomal matrix. This means that the dorsal surface of the acrosomal region of the testicular tammar wallaby sperm head is a transient structure. The dorsal acrosomal surface of the mature spermatozoon appears ultrastructurally to be the relocated ventral surface of the acrosomal projections which previously extended out beyond the acrosomal depression on the dorsal surface of the nucleus of the immature spermatozoon.

Fourteen steps of spermatid development in the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii), from the newly formed spermatid to the release of the spermatozoon into the lumen of the seminiferous tubules, were recognised at the ultrastructural level using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. This study confirmed that although the main events are generally similar, the process of the differentiation of the spermatid in marsupials is notably different and relatively more complex than that in most studied eutherian mammals and birds. For example, the sperm head rotated twice in the late stage of spermiogenesis: the shape of the spermatid changed from a T-shape at step 10 into a streamlined shape in step 14, and then back to T-shape in the testicular spermatozoa. Some unique figures occurring during the spermiogenesis in other marsupial species, such as the presence of Sertoli cell spurs, the nuclear ring and the subacrosomal space, were also found in the tammar wallaby. However, an important new finding of this study was the development of the postacrosome complex (PAC), a special structure that was first evident as a line of electron dense material on the nuclear membrane of the step 7 spermatid. Subsequently it became a discontinuous line of electron particles, and migrated from the ventral side of the nucleus to the area just behind the posterior end of the acrosome, which was closely located to the sperm–egg fusion site proposed for Monodelphis domestica (Taggart et al. 1993). The PAC and its possible role in both American and Australian marsupials requires detailed examination. Distinct immature features were discovered in the wallaby testicular spermatozoa. A scoop shape of the acrosome was found on the testicular spermatozoa of the tammar wallaby, which was completely different to the compact button shape of acrosome in ejaculated spermatozoa. The fibre network found beneath the cytoplasm membrane of the midpiece of the ejaculated sperm also did not occur in the testicular spermatozoa, although the structure of the principal piece was fully formed and had no obvious morphological difference from that of the epididymal and ejaculated spermatozoa. The time frame of the formation of morphologically mature spermatozoa in the epididymis of the tammar wallaby needs to be determined by further studies.

Bone responds to the stresses placed on it by remodeling its structure, which includes shape, trabecular distribution and density distribution. We studied 49 pairs of cadaveric human 1st metatarsal bones in an attempt to establish the pattern of density distribution and to correlate it with the biomechanical function of the bone. We found that the head is denser than the base, the dorsal portion of the whole metatarsal is denser than the plantar portion and the lateral portion of the whole metatarsal is denser than the medial aspect. The same pattern of density with respect to dorsal vs plantar and lateral vs medial was also seen in the head when it was examined alone. When we compared the 4 portions of the head with the same portion of the metatarsal as a whole we found that only the medial portion of the head was less dense than its respective portion of the whole metatarsal. All of these patterns of density distribution are consistent with respect to age, sex and laterality. We have also hypothesised as to the relationship between density distribution seen both in the whole metatarsal and in the metatarsal head and their biomechanical function in the gait cycle.

Pregnancy and lactation make demands on maternal calcium homeostasis which may affect bone strength. Recently, changes in cancellous architecture have been described in iliac crest bone biopsies from normal pregnant women but the rarity of such human material means an animal model is essential. The microanatomy of cancellous bone was compared in uniparous and multiparous rats using undecalcified histological sections of lumbar and caudal vertebrae and also proximal femora. An automated trabecular analysis system (TAS) measured a comprehensive range of structural variables including the trabecular number, connectivity and width. In the first pregnancy cycle an early stimulation of bone formation (which quadrupled at some sites) was indicated by an increase in the skeletal uptake and spacing of double calcein labels and the immediate generation of thicker more numerous and interconnected trabeculae. A 40% increase in cancellous bone volume was observed in the lumbar spine in comparison with age-matched virgin controls. In contrast, a rapid succession of 3 pregnancy cycles (including lactation) culminated in cancellous atrophy of 15% at the same site, with a loss in trabecular number ranging from 20% (caudal vertebra) to 30% (lumbar vertebrae). In comparison, the proximal femur lost 40% of its struts but, nevertheless, uniquely sustained its cancellous bone volume. When lactation was excluded the number of struts lost was halved although trabecular thinning then took place which was sufficient to maintain the previous 15% deficit in bone volume. It was concluded that a single pregnancy strengthens the cancellous component of the maternal skeleton while a quick succession of pregnancies weakens it. Lactation influences the pattern of bone loss but not its amount.

Variations in the branching pattern of the common hepatic artery often occur and may be encountered during cholecystectomy. Variants of the cystic artery, its branches and relations with the biliary structures and blood vessels emphasise the importance of arterial dissection in biliary surgery. In this study, a rare variant of the cystic artery and its choledochal branch is described. The cystic artery arose from the gastroduodenal artery, passed anterior to structures in the free margin of lesser omentum and travelled a long distance before supplying the gall bladder. A long choledochal branch was noted accompanying the common bile duct. Surgical implications of this variation of the cystic and choledochal arteries are discussed.
