No library is richer in its field of concentration (the former Dutch East and West Indies) than that of the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology (the K.I.T.L.V.). Any listing of its contents accumulated over the past 175 years, serves as a useful general bibliography for historians as well as anthropologists and linguists. Between 1971 and 1975, the Institute's documentalist, G.A. Nagelkerke, prepared five of those, all of them published by the Institute at Stationsplein 10, Leiden, and still available through it. During our last Workshop in December, 1976, Professor Bley of Hamburg University gave an interesting talk about German historiography since 1945. The contributions of this conference are to be printed soon, and I would not want to anticipate upon them. But in any case, one of the striking features of German historiography is the small number of works dealing with the history of Expansion. Small in comparison with French and English productions in that field, and small also as a part of the total German output. Still, in the last few years, this kind of historical research has received stimuli from several angles. Apart from theories about underdevelopment, modernization and dependence, whether or not they stem from a marxist viewpoint, there is also an interest in the causes of the first World War which has drawn attention in Germany to the time of imperialism.

The Dutch-Indonesian program in Indonesian Studies was inaugurated in January, 1975 as a four-year, bilateral exchange of research materials and personnel in het humanities and social sciences.

The principal aim of the Program, one which links its diverse aspects and activities, is to stimulate the use by Dutch and Indonesian scholars of the enormous body of information about Indonesia written in Dutch to ensure, in other words, that the traditions of scholarship on Indonesia which many Dutch and Indonesian scholars have worked to establish during the colonial period would continue to be developed as a new generation of Dutch and Indonesian researchers take up the study of Indonesian societies and cultures.

The volumes of this series are published for the greater part by Inter Documentation Company AG, Switzerland (IDC). They are all of the same format and contain a general introduction in English, French, and, if necessary, in the language of publication. It is stated in this introduction that the volumes for Belgium, The United Kingdom and the United States will appear separately. This also holds for the Netherlands (see below: ROESSINGH and VISSER, forthcoming). Except for the United States and the United Kingdom volumes, which list documents relating to the whole continent, the guide only takes into account sources relating to Africa south of the Sahara, from Mauritania and Sudan to the Cape of Good Hope and including Madagascar and the off-shore islands (see also below: the Inventory ed. by C.Giglio).
