In this paper, we are concerned on the receiver design and the different imaging possibilities for radar multiple input multiple output (MIMO) synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The transmission of pseudo-orthogonal waveforms gives many opportunities in reception on how to manage these different signals. We proposed to compare different resolutions and robustness for SAR measurements: single input single output (SISO) and MIMO. Moreover, we developed different SAR processings based on MIMO configuration by using the Stolt interpolation on simulations. On real data, these SAR processing will be adapted for the backprojection processing.

In this paper, the use of regularization methods to solve the location problem in multilateration systems, using Mode-S signals, is studied, evaluated, and developed. The Tikhonov method has been implemented as a first application to solve the classical system of hyperbolic equations in multilateration systems. Some simulations are obtained and the results are compared with those obtained by the well-established Taylor linearization and with the Cramér–Rao lower bound analysis. Significant improvements, for the accuracy, convergence, and the probability of location, are found for the application of the Tikhonov method.

This paper shows the contribution of slow-wave coplanar waveguides on the performance of power amplifiers operating at millimeter-wave frequencies in CMOS-integrated technologies. These transmission lines present a quality factor Q two to three times higher than that of the conventional microstrip lines at the same characteristic impedance. To demonstrate the contribution of the slow-wave transmission lines on integrated millimeter-wave amplifiers performance, two Class-A single-stage power amplifiers (PA) operating at 60 GHz were designed in standard 40 nm CMOS technology. One of the power amplifiers incorporates only the microstrip lines, whereas slow-wave coplanar transmission lines are considered in the other one. Both amplifiers are biased in Class-A operation, drawing, respectively, 22 and 23 mA from 1.2 V supply. Compared to the power amplifier using conventional microstrip transmission lines, the one implemented with slow-wave transmission lines shows improved performances in terms of gain (5.6 dB against 3.3 dB), 1 dB output compression point (OCP1dB: 7 dBm against 5 dBm), saturated output power (Psat: >10 and 8 dBm, respectively), power-added efficiency (PAE: 16% instead of 6%), and die area without pads (Sdie: 0.059 mm2 against 0.069 mm2).

To protect a worst-case user, Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) transmits inflated integrity information for protection level computation. In this work, a novel user-based technique for autonomous protection level computation is proposed. Its quality is examined over Key Performance Indicators tests for integrity and availability using real European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) data. The accomplished experiments confirm that this technique allows significant availability improvement without breaches of the integrity.

We present the non-linear electrical properties of simple two-terminal switching devices based on vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films. The current–voltage characteristics of such devices present negative differential resistance (NDR) regions allowing generating electrical self-oscillations across the investigated devices, with frequencies ranging from several kHz up to 1 MHz. We investigate and compare the factors determining the onset of oscillatory phenomenon in both voltage- and current-activated oscillations and explain its origin. For both activation modes, we will correlate the properties of electrical oscillations (amplitude and frequency) with the amplitude of the continuous excitation signal, the physical geometry of the devices or ambient temperature. We conclude by mentioning several possible applications for the oscillation generation in the radiofrequency (RF)/microwave domains (inverters, integrated a.c. signal generators, pressure and temperature sensors, etc.).

A dielectric waveguide-based structure coupled to a whispering gallery mode (WGM) disc resonator is introduced as a low-cost integrable millimeter-wave (mm-wave) bio-sensor. An efficient variational analysis method is developed and applied to the WGM. Three sets of sensors, operating in different ranges of frequency from 85 to 220 GHz, are fabricated and tested. The performance of the fabricated bio-sensor is demonstrated for sensing different concentrations of glucose solution samples at D-band. Also, the sensitivity, selectivity, and repeatability of these sensors are examined.

This paper presents the research done at LAAS-CNRS and in the context of “NANOCOMM” project. This project aims to demonstrate the potential of nanotechnology for the development of reconfigurable, ultra-sensitive, low consumption, and easy installation sensor networks with high performance in terms of reliability in line with the requirements of aeronautics and space. Each node of the sensor network is composed of nano-sensors, transceiver, and planar antenna. In this project, three-dimensional (3D) heterogeneous integration of these different components, on flexible polyimide substrate, is planned. Two types of sensors are selected for this project: strain gauges are used for the structure health monitoring (SHM) application and electrochemical cells are used to demonstrate the ability to detect frost phenomenon. After processing, sensors data are processed and transmitted to the reader unit using an ultra-wide band (UWB) transceiver. (digital baseband and radiofrequency (RF) head). The design and implementation of reconfigurable wireless communication architectures are provided according to the application requirements using nanoscale 65 nm CMOS technology. It is proposed to integrate on flexible substrate the transceiver using the flip-chip technique. A 60 GHz planar antenna is connected to the transceiver for the wireless data transmission. This paper is focused on the 3D integration techniques and the technological process used for the realization of such communicating nano-objects on polyimide substrate. The first assembly tests were carried out. Tests of interconnections quality and electrical contacts (Daisy Chain, calibration kit, etc.) were also performed with good results. A bumps contact resistance of 15 mΩ is measured.

Delay time measurements are a commonly used technique for the characterization of dielectric materials. Especially with regard to the characterization of water–solid mixtures like soil or grain delay time measurements, e.g., time domain reflectometry offers a powerful method. However, the accuracy of reflection measurements is limited due to multiple reflections caused by inhomogenities of the environmental material of the sensor. This contribution deals with an improved sensor design based on time domain transmission (TDT) measurements. Thus, the first received impulse includes the necessary information. Multiple reflections are received at later time steps and their influence on the measurement accuracy is nearly negligible. To improve the performance and the applicability of the designed sensor, a cost–efficient TDT system is designed, which is integrated in the sensor. Additionally, a so-called “concentric reversion coupler” is used, which offers the possibility to perform TDT measurements without the necessity of external measuring ports.

The paper outlines an exhaustive computer-aided design (CAD) procedure for the circuit-level simulation of entire multi-input multi-output (MIMO) links. The multiple transmitting and receiving antennas are treated as multiport radiating systems characterized by electromagnetic (EM) analysis. The effects of mutual couplings in terms of the frequency-dependent near-field and far-field performance of each element are accounted for in a straightforward and rigorous way. The set of transmitters is treated as a unique non-linear system loaded by the multiport antenna, and is analyzed by non-linear circuit techniques. The same is done for the set of receivers. In order to establish the connection between transmitters and receivers, the radiated far-field is evaluated by EM analysis, and the field incident on each receiver antenna is computed by extending to the MIMO case an available ray tracing technique. EM theory is then used to describe the receiving array as a linear active multiport network. This technique allows analysis of several MIMO systems, exploiting different array element spatial locations and frequencies of operation in a straightforward and automatic way. Bit error rate (BER) computation and minimization are demonstrated at the circuit level.

The design of a high-stability radiometer is presented in this paper. It is used to characterize the stability of a microwave active cold load at L-band. The two-load radiometer takes advantage of a noise injection technique to improve its sensitivity. A temperature-stabilized enclosure is used to minimize gain and noise temperature fluctuations of the receiver. The radiometer sensitivity is 0.031 K and the gain fluctuations are less than 0.005 dB during 1 day. The total gain and the receiver noise temperature of the radiometer exhibit very small variations (<0.03 dB and 1 K, respectively) on the long term.

A novel topology for millimeter-wave-integrated transformers is proposed. The windings are stacked and secondaries are designed with different trace widths and different diameters from that of the primary, in order to obtain relatively high-inductance transformation ratios. Measurement and simulation results of 65 nm Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) and 130 nm combination of Bipolar and CMOS (BiCMOS) transformers present the impact of this structure on the inductances, quality factor, coupling coefficient, and minimum insertion loss. Within certain limits on the trace widths, it is shown that the proposed topology not only increases the transformation ratio but also improves its overall performance.

This paper considers and compares the numerical characterization of regular planar antenna arrays from two viewpoints. In the case where the array is sufficiently large, the well-known infinite array idealization applies and a very efficient simulation method is presented which combines array theory with a specialized form of the finite-element method called the transfinite element method (TFEM). Alternatively, a more direct approach is discussed in which the entire antenna array is simulated as a finite structure using recent advances in the domain decomposition method (DDM). Taken together, the two methods provide a comprehensive simulation method for regular arrays from small order to very large order.

In this paper characterization of dielectric materials in liquid and powder phase using concentric closed and split ring resonators of length λ, λ/2, and λ/4 is reported. Experimental results have been validated by simulations and theoretically modeling. Sensitivity of the resonator with closed rings was maximum. Experimentally extracted values of dielectric constant of ferrite ranged from 14.05 to 15.1 with closed ring resonators and from 13.6 to 14.02 with split ring resonator, respectively. For spirulina platensis the dielectric constant was lying in the range 1.78–1.93 and 1.74–2.04 with closed ring and split ring resonators, respectively. The values extracted experimentally are in good agreement with simulation and theoretically found values. However, the values obtained from closed ring resonator were in agreement with the dielectric constant values of ferrite and spirulina platensis.

In this work, a very efficient mixed-potential integral-equation formulation is implemented for the rigorous analysis of multilayered structures with arbitrarily shaped two-dimensional periodic metallic and/or dielectric inclusions. Original acceleration techniques have been developed for the computation of the components of the scalar and dyadic Green's functions, based on different types of asymptotic extractions according to the potential considered. The theoretical approach and its computational convenience have been validated through different full-wave analyses concerning both scattering problems and complex-mode dispersive behaviors in various frequency-selective structures for microwave applications.
