Reference smectites were examined to determine relationships between Li uptake, cation-exchange capacity (CEC), and octahedral layer charge after Li saturation and heating at 250°C (Hofmann-Klemen effect). Direct measurements of exchangeable Li after heating led to overestimates of charge reduction due to entrapment of Li in collapsed interlayers. Expansion of interlayers by sequential washings with 1 N MgCl2, 0.01 N MgCl2, and ethanol and subsequent determinations of exchangeable Mg provided accurate measurements of reduced charge. The CEC reductions observed in dioctahedral samples as a result of Li saturation and heating equaled octahedral charge values derived from published mineral formulae, and interlayer charge estimates obtained by alkylammonium exchange confirmed that measured CEC reductions were a consequence of uniform decreases in octahedral layer charge.

Dioctahedral specimens retained 1 to 10 meq/100 g of non-exchangeable Li in excess of CEC reduction and were acidified in direct proportion to their total Fe contents, apparently as a result of the deprotonation of structural hydroxyl groups. Mild acid treatment reprotonated these hydroxyl groups, released excess Li, and resulted in total Li contents comparable to measured CEC reductions. Heating (250°C) Mg-saturated hectorite induced a loss of octahedral Li, acidification, and a reduction of CEC, indicating that Mg had partially replaced octahedral Li. These results suggest that octahedral Li is mobile at low temperatures and that cation movement into or out of the octahedral sheet is favored if the layer charge is reduced.

During photochemical dissolution of goethite in acid/oxalate solution, Fe3+, Fe2+, and CO2 were released and towards the end of the reaction ferrous oxalate precipitated. The dissolution process involved an initial slow stage followed by a much faster reaction. The slow stage was eliminated by addition of 20 ppm Fe2+ to the system at the start of the reaction. The presence of this Fe2+ did not accelerate the secondary dissolution process. Both protons and oxalate ions appear to have been involved in the dissolution process. Dissolution was accelerated by an increase in oxalate concentration (from 0.0025 to 0.025 M) in the system and also depended on pH, reaching a maximum rate at pH 2.6. Highly substituted (15.9 mole % Al) goethite dissolved more slowly per unit area than unsubstituted goethite. Lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) dissolved faster than goethite. The first stage of the dissolution process probably proceeded by slow release of Fe3+ through complexation with oxalate adsorbed on the goethite surface. The faster, secondary step appears to have been a reductive dissolution reaction involving adsorbed ferrous oxalate.

Investigations were conducted to determine the hydrothermal transformations of synthetic birnessite exchanged with different metal ions. Autoclaving in a Teflon-lined stainless steel pressure vessel at 155°C for 24 hr of Mg-, Ca-, La-, and Co-saturated birnessite yielded manganese minerals having 10-Å X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) spacings. The autoclaved Mg-birnessite yielded a mineral identical to natural todorokite in its infrared (IR) spectrum and XRD patterns. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) provided images having 10-, 12.5-, 15-, and 20-Å wide fringes indicating heterogeneous channel widths in the crystallographic a direction, and IR spectroscopy produced bands at 757, 635, 552, 515, 460, and 435 cm-1, confirming the product obtained by autoclaving Mg-birnessite to be todorokite. Prolonged autoclaving of Mg-birnessite yielded manganite (γ-MnOOH) as a by-product; manganite did not form when the autoclaving time was shortened to 8 hr. Also, when Ca-saturated samples were autoclaved, the product gave d-values of 10 Å, but the XRD lines were broad and heterogeneity of the channel sizes was evident from HRTEM observations. The Ca-derivative had an IR spectrum similar to that of natural todorokite. Images showing 10-Å lattice fringes were observed by HRTEM for the Ni-saturated sample, which also produced an XRD pattern similar to that of the Mg-saturated sample. Co- and Lasaturated samples did not form todorokite, although HRTEM of La-saturated samples indicated some 10-Å lattice fringes that were unstable in the electron beam. Birnessite saturated with Na, K, NH4, Cs, Ba, or Mn(II) gave products having 7-Å spacings upon autoclaving.

The coarse (0.4–2 µm) clay fraction of an Albian black shale collected in the Atlantic Ocean (Deep Sea Drilling Project leg 11) consists chiefly (90–95%) of smectite and 5–10% illite. Both minerals are locally surrounded by overgrowth structures, such as fine laths about 0.05–0.4 µm long and 0.02–0.1 µm wide. Individual laths or assemblages of laths protrude from the center of smectite flakes at angles of about 60° to each other. Laths occur around illite crystals in a similar manner or coalesce into a rim that consists of 0.05–0.1-µm-size particles. On the basis of scanning transmission electron microscopy: (1) the center of individual illite crystals consists of a dioctahedral mineral, but the overgrowth structures are Al-Fe beidellites; and (2) the smectite flakes have highly variable compositions, but correspond chiefly to Fe-Al-beidellite, whereas the overgrowths are compositionally close to montmorillonite.

The overgrowth structures seem to have formed during early diagenesis. The chemical composition of overgrowths around illite and smectite tend to be similar in response to the new environment, implying an addition of silica to both materials.

Ash layers from Searles Lake, California, were sampled in core of drill hole KM-3, which penetrated 693 m of lacustrine sediment deposited in a playa-lake complex over the past 3.2 my. Lake water changed from moderately saline and slightly alkaline (pH ~7.5) to highly saline 2.04 my ago and to highly saline and alkaline (pH ~9.5) 1.28 my ago. As a result of brines flushing downward, the upper 291 m of sediment, spanning the past 1.28 my, contain highly saline, alkaline pore fluid. Silicic ash layers in contact with highly saline, alkaline pore fluid were first altered to phillipsite and meriinoite and then to K-feldspar and searlesite. The transformation of phillipsite and/or meriinoite to K-feldspar required more than 45,000 years and was largely completed in 140,000 years. Tephra layers in contact with moderately saline, slightly alkaline pore fluid vary from uncemented vitric ash containing minor smectite to bentonites in which glass is wholly altered to smectite, clinoptilolite, analcime, and opal. Layers with much fine tephra are more altered than the coarser, better-sorted layers. Alteration is attributed to hydrolysis in essentially a closed hydrologic system, in which the alteration of glass to smectite raised the pH, aSiO2, and (Na+ + K+)/H+ activity ratio to the level where clinoptilolite formed. Some diffusion and/ or fluid flow is, however, indicated by the loss of SiO2 during the alteration of ash layers to smectite and by anhydrite deposited during and after clinoptilolite in some tuffaceous sandstones.

The mineralogy of partially kaolinized strata interbedded with lignite at the San Miguel mine, Atascosa County, Texas, was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction and optical and scanning electron microscopy. The San Miguel lignite occurs in the lower Jackson Group (late Eocene) of southern Texas. Based on mineralogical and micromorphological data, some of these clay partings are probably volcanic in origin and were exposed to variable degrees of in situ kaolinization in a swamp environment. Coexistence of kaolinite, clinoptilolite, and opal-CT in several of these strata suggests that the partially kaolinized volcanic layers were subjected to a subsequent resilication process following burial. Kaolinite is the dominant mineral in the oldest and most kaolinized volcanic layer (underclay) below the lowest lignite bed (seam D). The kaolinite exhibits a well-developed vermicular morphology. The youngest volcanic layer, which occurs stratigraphically above the uppermost lignite seam, is characterized by pseudomorphs of volcanic glass shards and consists mainly of clinoptilolite. Movement of siliceous ground water from this layer to the underlying strata apparently provided silica-rich solutions from which opal-CT and large (as long as 300 μm) euhedral crystals of clinoptilolite precipitated in the fossilized plant roots, veinlets, and fractures within the underlying strata. Micromorphological relationships between the Sirich (opal-CT and clinoptilolite) and sulfide (marcasite and pyrite) minerals in the fossil roots and fractures suggest that the marcasite formed before and pyrite after the resilication process.

An end-member natroalunite of composition (K0.04Na0.96)(Al2.98Fe0.02)(SO4)2(OH)6 occurs in saprolitic clays in a laterite profile developed over Deccan Trap basalts at Matanumad in the Kutch region of Gujarath state, India. Pseudocubic natroalunite crystals, ranging from 0.5 to 1 µm in size, have replaced pseudohexagonal, 2-µm-size platelets of kaolinite. The reverse reaction (kaolinization of natroalunite) has also been observed in the laterites and bauxites immediately adjacent to the saprolite. The kaolinite crystallites that replaced natroalunite occur as a mosaic of anhedral platelets that range in size from 0.1 to 0.3 µm. The formation of natroalunite at Matanumad postdates the laterization of the basalts. It is related to the post-diagenetic formation of sulfuric acid-rich solutions by the oxidation of pyrite in the Eocene-Oligocene black shales of the Matanumad basin. The kaolinitic clays at the top of the saprolite zone have been intensely altered by the acidic solutions, leading to a high concentration of natroalunite.

The introduction of artificial ±b/3 stacking faults into well-crystallized kaolinite by intercalating and removing hydrazine had no observable effect on the solid-state 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum of kaolinite. Also, the introduction of such stacking faults did not alter the hydroxyl-stretching region of the infrared spectrum, implying no change in the hydrogen bonding between the displaced layers. Calculations of Si...H distances and Si-O...H angles from reported structures for kaolinite indicated that the resolution of the two Si chemical environments was due to differences in hydrogen-bonding at the surface of the silicate sheet.

A monoclinic IIb-2 clinochlore from Washington, D.C., contrary to previous studies, is primarily a ferroan rather than a ferrian chlorite. Disorder of tetrahedral Si,Al cations is indicated because of unsuccessful structural refinements in subgroup symmetries. The true space group is C2/m. Slight ordering of Mg, Fe2+, and Fe3+ over octahedra M(l) and M(2) within the 2:1 layer (mean M-O,OH = 2.092 and 2.084 Å, respectively), complete ordering of trivalent Al into the centrosymmetric octahedron M(4) of the interlayer sheet (M-OH = 1.929 Å), and ordering of primarily divalent cations (Mg and Fe) into the two interlayer M(3) octahedra (M-OH = 2.117 Å) exist. The excess of negative charge above unity due to tetrahedral substitution of Al for Si (1.378 atoms) is compensated entirely within the octahedral sheet of the 2:1 layer.

Ordering of a trivalent cation into one octahedron in the interlayer should be universal for all stable trioctahedral chlorites. In this specimen the ordering is due to (1) minimization of cation-cation repulsion by layer offsets which provide more space around the trivalent element, and (2) energy minimization by localization of the source of positive charge on the interlayer sheet in one octahedron rather than two. In other structures or for different compositions additional factors can be important also. Most chlorites of the IIb and Ib (β = 90°) types are expected to show disorder of the tetrahedral cations. The b positioning of interlayer and layer provides no preferential driving force for concentration of Si and A1 in any tetrahedron as a consequence of the expected ordering of the interlayer cations. The monoclinic IIb-2 polytype is less abundant in nature than the triclinic IIb-4 and IIb-6 structures, because only half as many possible superpositions of layers exist that will produce monoclinic symmetry. Crystallization factors must also be important, because the IIb-2 chlorite is much less abundant than predicted by this purely geometrical argument.

Saponites and vermiculites may assume at least 11 ordered or semi-ordered layer stacking sequences. For a given relative humidity, the layer stacking type assumed is a function of the nature of the interlayer cation, the layer charge density, the mean size of the particles, and the di- or trioctahedral character of the sheets. For each interlayer cation, a succession of layer stacking types can be observed as relative humidity increases. For high relative humidity, some particular layer stacking types exist, but only for low-charge minerals. No other differences have been found for saponites and vermiculites in each successive layer stacking type. The degree of order that these layer stacking types imply is probably due to the existence of electrostatic bonds between hydrated interlayer cations and surface oxygens of the substituted tetrahedra. For octahedrally substituted 2:1 phyllosilicates, however, the disorder of the layer stacking sequences is related to a highly delocalized distribution of negative charges on the surface oxygens of the layers.

A study of the superstructures detected in saponites and vermiculites indicates that the interlayer cations tend to be located as far as possible from one another. The superstructures exist only with some cations and some layer stacking types and if the layer charge density is compatible with the charge produced by the cation distribution in this kind of superstructure.

The name volkonskoite was first used in 1830 to describe a bright blue-green, chromiumbearing clay material from the Okhansk region, west of the Ural Mountains, U.S.S.R. Since that time, the name has been applied to numerous members of the smectite group of clay minerals, although the reported chromium content has ranged from 1% to about 30% Cr2O3. The name has also been applied to some chromian chlorites. Because volkonskoite has been used for materials that differ not only in their chromium content but also in their basic structure, the species status of the mineral has been unclear.

To resolve this uncertainty, two specimens of volkonskoite from (1) Mount Efimiatsk, the type locality in the Soviet Union (USNM 16308) and (2) the Okhansk region in the Perm Basin, U.S.S.R. (USNM R4820), were examined by several mineralogical techniques. Neotype sample 16308 has the following structural formula:

Mössbauer spectroscopy indicates that 91% and 98% of the iron is present as Fe3+ in samples 16308 and R4820, respectively. X-ray powder diffraction patterns of both samples have broad lines corresponding to minerals of the smectite group.

On the basis of these data, volkonskoite appears to be a dioctahedral member of the smectite group that contains chromium as the dominant cation in the octahedral layer. Smectites containing less than this amount of octahedral chromium should not be called volkonskoite, but should be named by chemical element adjectives, e.g., chromian montmorillonite, chromian nontronite.

57Fe Mössbauer spectra obtained at room temperature and 78 K for natural Mg-saturated, Ca-saturated, and benzidinium-intercalated vermiculite having a high tetrahedral iron content are presented. For all samples the spectra were computer-fitted with five overlapping doublets, representing Fe in both tetrahedral and octahedral sites. One doublet has parameters consistent with the weathered ilmenite known to be present as inclusions. For the intercalated vermiculite, the δ value of the doublet assigned to the tetrahedral Fe3+ increased with respect to the untreated sample, suggesting that the electron densities about the Fe sites had decreased following intercalation. A charge movement from the silicate layers towards the interlayer monovalent benzidinium ions is also implied. The direction of this charge movement is opposite to that found when blue monopositive radical cations form on montmorillonite surfaces. The Mössbauer evidence suggests the absence of an interlayer-Fe3+ complex.

Quaternary debris flows derived from ophiolite melange in northern Southland, New Zealand, are locally cemented and veined by cross-fiber and fine-grained chrysotile. Chrysotile was identified by optical, X-ray powder diffraction, electron microprobe, differential thermal (DTA), and infrared analysis methods. Microprobe and DTA also suggested the presence of as much as 6% of sub-microscopic, noncrystalline alumina, probably in the form of pseudoboehmite. Cavity fillings and irregular veins containing chrysotile are as thick as 40 cm and commonly contain lizardite clasts. Calcite commonly accompanies chrysotile as a vein mineral. Magnetite and pyrite are found near and adjacent to chrysotile veins. These accessory minerals imply that the chrysotile formed under alkaline, reducing conditions. Surface water seepages have pH = 9. Remnant debris-flow topography, Holocene radiocarbon dates, and the absence of hot spring activity confirms that chrysotile can form under near-surface, low-temperature conditions. Growth of chrysotile fibers on a lizardite substrate suggests that the chrysotile formed by solution of detrital lizardite and subsequent precipitation in cavities within the debris flow.

Clinoptilolite from the Fort LaClede deposit in Sweetwater County, Wyoming, shows a moderate selectivity for NH4− over Na+ in aqueous solution. At 30°C, the standard free energy of this replacement reaction is −0.7 kcal/mole at an ionic strength of 0.05 M and −0.8 kcal/mole at 0.5 M. The Na+-NH4+ exchange is complete within 3 days in agitated solution and proceeds to the same extent from the clinoptilolite saturated with either cation.

The Ca2+-Na+ exchange also is complete within 3 days in agitated aqueous solution and proceeds to the same extent from either the calcium or the sodium form of the zeolite. Using test methods which take into account the slower equilibration of Ca2+-loaded clinoptilolite, the cation-exchange capacity is substantially the same over the full range of loading by Ca2+ and Na+. Ca2+ replaces Na+ with decreasing selectivity as Ca2+ loading increases to about 80% at 30°C (95% at 63°C), above which the selectivity reverses. The standard free energy of replacement of two Na+ ions by one Ca2+ ion in 0.05 M solution is −1.2 ± 0.2 kcal/mole at 63°C and −0.3 to −0.8 kcal/mole at 30°C.

A new approach to the interpretation of Mössbauer spectra of Fe3+-phyllosilicates having vacant trans-octahedra is based on (1) crystal structure simulation methods that allow for the size and the shape of a Fe3+-octahedron as a function of the nearest surrounding cations; and (2) calculations of electric field gradients (EFG) on Fe3+ in terms of the ionic point-charge model. Calculations were performed by direct summation within the region of radius ≤50 Å. Coordinates for the anions in the coordination octahedra have been assigned to take into account the nearest cationic environment. Atomic coordinates for the rest of the summation volume are those for the average unit cell. EFG calculations for cation combinations responsible for the visible quadrupole splitting Δvis in the spectra of nontronite, “red” muscovite, and celadonite have led to good agreement between Δvis and Δcalc. Computer fitting of the nontronite and celadonite spectra based on EFG calculations for the rest of the possible cation combinations suggests that the distribution of tetrahedral cations in nontronite obeys the Loewenstein rule, and in celadonite, the distribution of R3+ and R2+ over cis-octahedra is predominantly ordered, in agreement with electron diffraction and infrared spectroscopy data. The Mössbauer spectrum of one of the glauconites suggested the presence of celadonite-like and muscovite-like domains in its 2:1 layers.

Core cuttings from numerous wells traversing Oligocene through Recent sediments of the Texas Gulf Coast were examined with a scanning electron microscope using the back-scattered electron imaging mode (BSE) to ascertain diagenetic changes in clays and associated minerals of mudrocks and of adjacent sandstones. Several occurrences of authigenic kaolinite and chlorite were noted, each characterized by a specific texture and a specific diagenetic microenvironment. In all occurrences kaolinite appears to have formed before chlorite, and in some the kaolinite appears to have precipitated directly from solution. Chlorite, ubiquitously an iron-rich variety, appears to have precipitated in some places directly from solution. It has also been noted pseudomorphous after kaolinite. A progressive decrease in the iron content of mixed-layer illite/smectite with increasing depth is believed to have released the necessary iron and to have driven the kaolinite-to-chlorite reaction.

The effects of chemical reduction of structural Fe3+ in nontronite SWa-1 (ferruginous smectite) on intervalence electron transfer (IT) and magnetic exchange were investigated. Visible absorption spectra in the region 800-400 nm of a chemical reduction series of the SWa-1 nontronite revealed an IT band near 730 nm (13,700 cm−1). Both the intensity and position of this band were affected by the extent of Fe reduction. The intensity increased until the Fe2+ content approached 40% of the total Fe, then decreased slightly with more Fe2+. The position of the band also shifted to lower energy as the extent of reduction increased.

Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements showed that the magnetic exchange in unaltered nontronite is frustrated antiferromagnetic, but ferromagnetic in reduced samples. Magnetic ordering temperatures are in the range 10–50 K, depending on the extent of reduction. The ferromagnetic component in the magnetization curve increased with increasing Fe2+ in the crystal structure. The positive paramagnetic interaction likely is due to electron charge transfer from Fe2+ to Fe3+ through such structural linkages as Fe2+-O-Fe3+ (perhaps following a double exchange mechanism), which is consistent with the visible absorption spectra.

Fifteen iron oxide accumulations from the bottoms of two Finnish lakes (“lake ores”) were found to contain as much as 50% Fe. Differential X-ray powder diffraction and selective dissolution by oxalate showed that the samples consisted of poorly crystallized goethite and ferrihydrite. The crust ores of one lake had higher ferrihydrite to goethite ratios than the nodular ores of the other lake. The higher ferrihydrite proportion was attributed to a higher rate of Fe2+ supply from the ground water and/or a higher rate of oxidation as a function of water depth and bottom-sediment permeability.

Values of Al-for-Fe substitution of the goethites determined from unit-cell dimensions agreed with those obtained from chemical extraction if the unit-cell volume rather than the c dimension was used. In very small goethite crystals a slight expansion of the a unit-cell dimension is probaby compensated by a corresponding contraction of the c dimension, so that a contraction of the c dimension need not necessarily be caused by Al substitution.

The goethites of the two lakes differed significantly in their Al-for-Fe substitutions and hence in their unit-cell sizes, OH-bending characteristics, dehydroxylation temperatures, dissolution kinetics, and Möss-bauer parameters. The difference in Al substitution (0 vs. 7 mole %) is attributed to the Al-supplying power of the bottom sediments: the silty-clayey sediments in one lake appear to have supplied Al during goethite formation, whereas the gravelly-sandy sediments in the other lake did not. The compositions of the goethites thus reflect their environments of formation.

A low-charge corrensite, i.e., a regular 1:1 interstratified smectite/chlorite was found in veins and fissures of an extensively fractured dolomite south of Perth, Ontario, Canada. Total chemical analysis indicated that the mineral was trioctahedral, having a structural formula corresponding to:

The coefficient of variation (CV) of the d(00l) spacings calculated for the mineral from X-ray powder diffraction data was 0.42, well below the maximum recommended value for corrensite, 0.75. The corrensite coexists with phlogopite, which is present as small (~0.5 mm) crystals throughout the rock and locally as large (~5 cm) crystals in pegmatitic veins. Microscopic observatiofls of large phlogopite crystals partially altered to corrensite suggest that corrensite formed at the expense of phlogopite by hydrothermal alteration.

The adsorption and reaction of thiophene and methylthiophenes in the interlayer of Cu2+- and Fe3+-montmorillonites were investigated by resonance Raman spectroscopy. Thiophene and 3-methylthiophene polymerized to form cations of polythiophene and polymethylthiophene respectively, which were characterized by absorption bands in the near-infrared region. These polymer cations formed in the interlayer were reduced to their neutral polymers if the clay-polymer complexes were in contact with water, and the formation of their neutral polymers was clearly demonstrated by their resonance Raman spectra. 2,5-Dimethylthiophene in which polymerization was hindered by methyl substitution at the 2 and 5 positions, was oxidized to 2,5-dimethylthiophene cation in the interlayer.
