The hangul Cervus hanglu hanglu, a Critically Endangered mountain ungulate of Jammu and Kashmir, India, faces the imminent threat of population loss and extinction. Effective management of its largest viable population in Dachigam National Park in the Kashmir Himalaya requires reliable demographic information. Using 14 microsatellite markers we identified 293 individuals (208 females and 85 males) through faecal analysis, and generated data on the genetic status and population size of the hangul in its winter habitat. The mean expected and observed heterozygosities of 0.62 and 0.59 are comparable to those of several red deer Cervus elaphus populations elsewhere. The effective population sizes were 46.3 and 93.7 when the frequencies of rare alleles were considered to be 0.050 and 0.010, respectively. The average mean kinship of the population was 0.34, and there was no evidence of a recent bottleneck event. In genetic mark–recapture analysis the best model included an effect of sex on both detection and recapture probabilities. Detection of males was highest in November, coinciding with the hangul breeding season, whereas detection of females was highest in December. Our estimate of the hangul population using genetic mark–recapture with bootstrapping was 394 individuals. To our knowledge, this is the first study to use genetic data to estimate the population of the hangul. It will guide future studies of this subspecies and also serve as an impetus for identifying founder animals for captive breeding, and for connecting the population in Dachigam National Park with the other small, isolated populations to ensure the long-term survival of this subspecies.

Conservation monitoring is paramount for the gathering of information on species and populations in need of conservation actions. However, monitoring of the mountain bongo Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci, a Critically Endangered antelope endemic to Kenya, has hitherto been limited to surveillance (i.e. focused on persistence of the species in particular areas), thus limiting the information that could be retrieved on the status and trends of these populations. Using a newly developed identification system, we implemented robust design mark–recapture using existing camera-trap records of four wild subpopulations of the bongo. We provide data on sex and age structure and the first estimates of population size in the wild. Males and calves seem to be suffering higher mortality than females, and only two of the four monitored populations include adults of both sexes and calves. The combined size of these two breeding populations is estimated to be 29–50. Our findings confirm the critical situation of the mountain bongo in the wild and highlight the need for conservation actions to reinforce the wild populations for the long-term conservation of this antelope.

Herein, we describe the use of scars to photo-identify the goliath grouper, Epinephelus itajara. Three individuals were photo-identified and re-sighted several times at the same site along the Brazilian coast, including the longest report for site fidelity, with more than four years.

This paper represents the first quantitative assessment of the distribution and abundance of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) inhabiting the waters around Lampedusa Island, Italy. Eleven years of photo-identification data, collected from 1996 to 2006 by three different research groups, were brought together, reviewed and analysed to fulfil the following objectives: (i) to obtain baseline information on the abundance and residency of the local bottlenose dolphin putative population; (ii) to review the current Marine Protected Area (MPA) boundaries, especially those referred to waters around Lampedusa Island, with a view to establish a new Special Area of Conservation (SAC); and (iii) to explore the potential and limits of analysing heterogeneous datasets to improve future data collection methods. The most resident dolphins were regularly observed in six specific areas around Lampedusa Island. From a total of 148 photo-identified bottlenose dolphins, 102 were classified as well-marked. The capture histories and the distribution of sightings clearly show a number of dolphins regularly use the study area. Best estimates for the first period within the ‘core study area’ were obtained for 1998 data. The 2005 estimate was significantly larger than the 1998 estimates (z = 2.160; P < 0.05) compared to that of 1998. Implications of our results for the current MPA, for transboundary conservation initiative involving Italy, Malta and Tunisia and for directing future research within and outside the MPA are fully discussed.

A long-term photo-identification study of killer whales (Orcinus orca) in northern Norway was initiated in 1986, when their prey the Norwegian spring-spawning herring (Clupea harengus) started to winter in a complex fjord system. The aim of this work was to estimate population size and apparent survival rates in this killer whale population using photo-identification and mark–recapture techniques with data collected during October–December 1986–2003. Total population size was estimated to be highest in 2003: 731 individuals (SE = 139, 95% CI = 505–1059) using a model taking heterogeneity of capture probabilities into account. Apparent survival of adult males and adult females was estimated using the Cormack–Jolly–Seber model as 0.971 (SE = 0.008) and 0.977 (SE = 0.009), respectively. Calving intervals ranged from 3 to 14 years (mean = 5.06, SE = 0.722). These are the first estimates of northern Norwegian killer whale population parameters, allowing their dynamics to be investigated and comparisons to be made with killer whale populations globally.

Tropical forest insects are vertically stratified between the canopy and understorey. Using 60 traps set at two heights above the forest floor (30 at 15 cm and 30 at 1 m) we compared abundances in capture height, persistence in traps, and sex of three co-occurring understorey butterflies (Cithaerias pireta, Dulcedo polita and Pierella helvina) in Costa Rica. We captured, marked and released 283 individual butterflies (65 C. pireta, 79 D. polita, 139 P. helvina) and showed all three species were captured more often in low traps, and P. helvina was captured only in low traps. The probability of remaining in traps for 24 h did not differ significantly for D. polita and P. helvina, but was significantly lower for C. pireta. The odds of trapping either sex did not differ significantly for P. helvina and C. pireta, but they were significantly lower for D. polita males. We experimentally demonstrate that these co-occurring species fly and feed just above the forest floor, but differ with respect to their persistence in traps and attraction to traps by sex. Our study implies that closely related species can exhibit behavioural differences that may influence population abundance estimates in multi-species studies.

Population density is an important parameter for monitoring and guiding conservation of small or threatened wildlife populations. Yet, despite the Vulnerable status of both species of clouded leopard Neofelis spp., and their disappearing tropical forest habitat, information on their population density is lacking from across their broad geographic ranges. Here we estimated population density of the Sunda clouded leopard N. diardi in the Maliau Basin Conservation Area in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, one of the first such estimates for either species of clouded leopard. With 25 camera-trap stations, each operated for at least 81 trap-nights, we obtained 59 detections of four individual Sunda clouded leopards in undisturbed primary rainforest but only a single detection in logged forest, despite similar sampling effort. Using spatially-explicit mark–recapture models, we estimated a density of 1.9 individuals per 100 km2 (95% confidence interval 0.7–5.4) for primary forest and 0.8 per 100 km2 (0.2–2.6) for the entire study area (including logged forest). These results will contribute to a better understanding of clouded leopard status and serve as a reference for future assessments of the species.

Life-history characteristics such as growth, mortality, and size at sexual maturity of the seahorse Hippocampus reidi were investigated in situ in north-eastern Brazil from August 2006 to July 2007. The von Bertalanffy growth constant K was estimated at 1.195 year−1 and L∞ was set as 20 cm according to Taylor's relationship, using a Lmax of 19 cm. The smallest male with a brood pouch and the smallest male with a fully mature pouch measured 9 and 9.5 cm (height), respectively, while the smallest mature female measured 8.8 cm. Appropriate reproductive individuals were recorded throughout the study, with peaks from May to November. The size of first effective reproduction (carrying embryos) was 12.4 cm for males, a value higher than previously reported. Estimated instantaneous rate of natural mortality ranged from 1.43 to 1.58 year−1. The estimated life span for the species was 30 months.

In a four year study of bottlenose dolphins along the southern shore of the outer Moray Firth we show that whilst dolphins were encountered along the majority of the survey area, there was a significant preference to the western section, which is the area directly adjacent to the current Special Area of Conservation (SAC). We also show that 80% of all groups encountered (N = 62) included calves, and that neonates were seen throughout the months of July, August, September and October. The mark–recapture abundance estimates for the southern outer Moray Firth were variable, with a highest annual estimate of 108 (95% CI = 79–129), which is similar to previous estimates for the number of animals using the entire Moray Firth. In contrast, the lowest annual estimate of 61 (95% CI = 48–74) suggests that not all individuals regularly use the entire geographical range of the population and that individual ranging patterns may vary across years. The findings of this study indicate that the southern outer Moray Firth is an important area for this population and that it should not simply be considered as a corridor to other areas of more importance. For this reason, we believe that further consideration of the current management of this population in areas outside the existing SAC is necessary.

Photo-identification surveys of humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae were conducted at West Greenland during 1988–93, the last 2 years of which were part of the internationally coordinated humpback whale research programme YoNAH, with the primary aim of estimating abundance for the West Greenland feeding aggregation. The area studied stretched from the coast out to the offshore margin of the banks, determined approximately by the 200 m depth contours, between c. 61°70′N and c. 66°N. The surveys were conducted between early July and mid-August and 993 h were expended on searching effort. A total of 670 groups of humpback whales was encountered leading to the identification of 348 individual animals. Three areas of concentration were identified: an area off Nuuk; an area at c. 63°30′N; and an area off Frederikshåb. Sequential Petersen capture–recapture estimates of abundance were calculated for five pairs of years at 357 (1988–89), 355 (1989–90), 566 (1990–91), 376 (1991–92), and 348 (1992–93). Excluding the anomalously high estimate in 1990–91, the simple mean is 359 (SE = 27.3, CV = 0.076) and the inverse CV-squared weighted mean is 356 animals (SE = 24.9, CV = 0.070). These calculations lead us to conclude that between 1988 and 1993 there were 360 humpbacks (CV = 0.07) in the West Greenland feeding aggregation. Using the Cormack–Jolly–Seber model framework non-calf survival rate was estimated at 0.957 (SE = 0.028). Our data have low power (P < 0.3) to detect a trend of 3.1%, assuming the probability of a type I error was 0.05.

Adult female survival as a potential proximate factor responsible for observed changes in southern elephant seal Mirounga leonina populations was investigated. We compared the survival rate estimates from mark–recapture data for female elephant seals from the Marion Island population (using program MARK) for two periods (pre- and post-decline) during the past 15 years and with estimates from another population in southern Argentina, which had increased steadily during the same period. Survival of prime-age adult females increased significantly by 6.2% during the latter part of the decline at Marion Island, and the survival of adult females at the colony in southern Argentina was 3.2% greater than at Marion Island after the stabilization. We thereby demonstrated the importance of adult female survival in population regulation and emphasized the importance of monitoring adult females in order to understand population changes in southern elephant seals. In addition, we investigated whether reproductive expenditure early on in life reduces future reproductive potential in the population at Marion Island. We did this by estimating and comparing future survival and breeding probabilities of females primiparous at different ages. The future annual survival and breeding probabilities of females breeding at a young age, was similar to those from females primiparous at an older age. There was also no reduced survival in the year following first breeding in young or older first time breeders. Reproductive expenditure in young primiparous females therefore did not entail future fitness costs relative to older primiparous females, and we found no evidence supporting the existence of various life-history strategies in terms of age of primiparity within a population of southern elephant seals.

Survival of juvenile Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddellii in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica was examined using 25 years of tagging and resighting data. Using mark–recapture models, we estimated age- and sex-specific apparent survival (survival confounded with emigration) rates of Weddell seals from birth to 6 years of age for 17 cohorts (1973–89). Survival in the first 2 years of life (0.429 and 0.635 for the first and second years, respectively) was lower than annual survival after 2 years of age (0.806), and was significantly lower for males than for females. First-year survival of the 1978 and 1983 cohorts was significantly lower than average first-year survival across cohorts. Reproductive rate of adult females was significantly correlated with first-year survival in concurrent years, but not when first-year survival lagged reproductive rate by 1 year nor with annual survival after 1 year of age. This correlation, however, was only significant in male first-year survival, possibly indicating that survival of males is more dependent on maternal or environmental conditions than survival of females. Average weaning mass varied significantly among cohorts and was nearly correlated to reproductive rate of adult females. This may indicate that maternal condition is reduced in years of low reproduction although more data are needed to test this conclusively.
