The self-similar expansion of an adiabatic electronegative dusty plasma (consisting of inertialess adiabatic electrons, inertialess adiabatic ions and inertial adiabatic negatively charged dust fluids) is theoretically investigated by employing the self-similar approach. It is found that the effects of the plasma adiabaticity (represented by the adiabatic index $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$) and dusty plasma parameters (determined by dust temperature and initial dust population) significantly modify the nature of the plasma expansion. The implications of our results are expected to play an important role in understanding the physics of the expansion of space and laboratory electronegative dusty plasmas.

Using two-dimensional hybrid expanding box simulations we study the competition between the continuously driven parallel proton temperature anisotropy and fire hose instabilities in collisionless homogeneous plasmas. For a quasi-radial ambient magnetic field the expansion drives $T_{p\Vert }>T_{p\bot }$ and the system becomes eventually unstable with respect to the dominant parallel fire hose instability. This instability is generally unable to counteract the induced anisotropization and the system typically becomes unstable with respect to the oblique fire hose instability later on. The oblique instability efficiently reduces the anisotropy and the system rapidly stabilizes, while a significant part of the generated electromagnetic fluctuations is damped to protons. As long as the magnetic field is in the quasi-radial direction, this evolution repeats itself and the electromagnetic fluctuations accumulate. For a sufficiently oblique magnetic field the expansion drives $T_{p\bot }>T_{p\Vert }$ and brings the system to the stable region with respect to the fire hose instabilities.

A new class of exact electrostatic solutions of the Vlasov–Maxwell equations based on the Jeans’s theorem is proposed for studying the evolution and properties of two-dimensional anisotropic plasmas that are far from thermodynamic equilibrium. In particular, the free expansion of a slab of electron–ion plasma into vacuum is investigated.

In this work, the effect of electron trapping on the self-similar expansion of electron-ion laser plasma into vacuum, combined with the effect of non-thermal (energetic) electrons is studied. For this, a mono-dimensional, non-relativistic model where the ions are cold and governed by fluid equations is used. In the approximation of quasi-neutrality of charge, the obtained self-similar solution shows that for ion (plasma) behavior, the presence of an important number of non-energetic trapped electrons in the plasma potential wells has the effect of slowing down the expansion, whereas the phenomenon of presence of energetic electrons makes the influence of trapping effect on the self-similar expansion very weak even in the case of a very small number of energetic electrons. This study is of interest in the context of the investigation of mono-energetic ion beams from intense laser interactions with plasmas.

To study the effect of explosive field emission cathodes on high power microwave generation, experiments were conducted on a reflex triode virtual cathode oscillator. Experimental results with cathodes made of graphite, stainless steel nails, and carbon fiber (needle type) are presented. The experiments have been performed at the 1 kJ Marx generator (200 kV, 300 ns, and 9 kA). The experimentally obtained electron beam diode perveance has been compared with the one-dimensional Child-Langmuir law. The cathode plasma expansion velocity has been calculated from the perveance data. It was found that the carbon fiber cathode has the lowest cathode plasma expansion velocity of 1.7 cm/μs. The radiated high power microwave has maximum field strength and pulse duration for the graphite cathode. It was found that the reflex triode virtual cathode oscillator radiates a single microwave frequency with the multiple needle cathodes for a shorter (<200 ns full width at half maximum) voltage pulse duration.

The physical phenomena of plasma plume generation and plasma expansion by target-laser interaction are considered for moderate laser power density. The kinetics of target vaporization, atom ionization, and plasma heating are described. The mechanism of electric sheath formation near the surface, electron emission from the target, and the electrical breakdown phenomena by laser irradiation are analyzed. The plasma expansion is described taking into account the near target plasma structure and the absorption of the laser radiation. The mechanisms accelerating the plasma and generating an electric field in it are discussed. The work reviews experiments and theoretical models and summarizes the results in order to understand the measurements and to discuss open questions. As example, the plasma parameters (electron temperature and density, degree of ionization, and plasma velocity) are calculated for an Ag target using the developed model that considers self-consistently the target heating, kinetics of target evaporation, plasma heating, and ion flux to the target. The calculated ion velocity in the expanding plasma jet is in accordance with the measurement. The ion energy linearly depends on the ion charge state, as observed experimentally.

In this paper, the influence of the electron flux limiter fe on hohlraum plasmas is studied by using the two-dimensional code LARED-H, and a method to experimentally determine fe via the motion of the M-band emission region in Au hohlraum is proposed. From our simulations, the limited free streaming flux may dominates the heat conduction in the regions with steep temperature gradient, including the laser deposition region, the flux-heated overcritical region, and the laser channel boundary between the hot laser plasmas and the surrounding radiation ablated plasmas, while these are important X-ray emission regions. Hence, the choosing of fe may influence the wall plasma expansion and the laser spot motion, and further influence the motion of the emission regions. From our study, the motion of the M-band (>1.5 keV) emission region is sensitive to fe when the limited free streaming flux dominates the heat conduction of the wall plasma expansion region, and so it is possible to determine fe via the motion of the M-band emission region. In this work, the model used in our simulations is taken from the wall and laser spot motion experiments done by Huser et al. (2009).

Proton radiography using laser-driven sources has been developed as a diagnostic since the beginning of the decade, and applied successfully to a range of experimental situations. Multi-MeV protons driven from thin foils via the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration mechanism, offer, under optimal conditions, the possibility of probing laser-plasma interactions, and detecting electric and magnetic fields as well as plasma density gradients with ~ps temporal resolution and ~ 5–10 µm spatial resolution. In view of these advantages, the use of proton radiography as a diagnostic in experiments of relevance to Inertial Confinement Fusion is currently considered in the main fusion laboratories. This paper will discuss recent advances in the application of laser-driven radiography to experiments of relevance to Inertial Confinement Fusion. In particular we will discuss radiography of hohlraum and gasbag targets following the interaction of intense ns pulses. These experiments were carried out at the HELEN laser facility at AWE (UK), and proved the suitability of this diagnostic for studying, with unprecedented detail, laser-plasma interaction mechanisms of high relevance to Inertial Confinement Fusion. Non-linear solitary structures of relevance to space physics, namely phase space electron holes, have also been highlighted by the measurements. These measurements are discussed and compared to existing models.

A fast photo imaging technique has been used to characterize the expansion dynamics of a laser generated silver plasma propagating through background inert gases (He and Ar) at different pressures. The time evolution of the expanding plasma was investigated in the framework of currently available phenomenological models. Mixed-propagation model gives an accurate description of the initial and late plasma expansion stages in Ar when proper input parameters are taken into account. In He, only the initial quasi-linear expansion and shock wave formation were observed along the space available to plasma motion.

Ag thin films were deposited by pulsed laser ablation in a controlled Ar atmosphere. The deposition process was performed at different Ar pressure values in the range between 10 and 100 Pa to investigate the influence of ambient gas pressure on the plasma expansion dynamics and on the film structural properties. Position, velocity and volume of the laser generated plasma as functions of time were obtained by time resolved fast photography. The morphological properties of the films were investigated by transmission electron microscopy which shows that film growth proceeds via aggregation on the substrates of nanoclusters formed in the expanding plume. The formation of nanoparticles takes place as a consequence of plasma confinement induced by the interaction with ambient gas species. Data from fast photography analysis were used as input parameters to calculate the size of the nanoparticles using a model that takes into account the collisional nature of the laser generated silver plasma.

The properties of beams of high energy protons accelerated during ultraintense, picosecond laser-irradiation of thin foil targets are investigated as a function of preplasma expansion at the target front surface. Significant enhancement in the maximum proton energy and laser-to-proton energy conversion efficiency is observed at optimum preplasma density gradients, due to self-focusing of the incident laser pulse. For very long preplasma expansion, the propagating laser pulse is observed to filament, resulting in highly uniform proton beams, but with reduced flux and maximum energy.
