We propose a notion of a proper Ehresmann semigroup based on a three-coordinate description of its generating elements governed by certain labelled directed graphs with additional structure. The generating elements are determined by their domain projection, range projection and σ-class, where σ denotes the minimum congruence that identifies all projections. We prove a structure result on proper Ehresmann semigroups and show that every Ehresmann semigroup has a proper cover. Our covering monoid turns out to be isomorphic to that from the work by Branco, Gomes and Gould and provides a new view of the latter. Proper Ehresmann semigroups all of whose elements admit a three-coordinate description are characterized in terms of partial multiactions of monoids on semilattices. As a consequence, we recover the two-coordinate structure result on proper restriction semigroups.

Access to an outdoor range has many potential benefits for laying hens but range use can be poor due to factors only partly understood. Techniques to monitor individual range use within commercial flocks are crucial to increase our understanding of these factors. Direct observation of individual range use is difficult and time-consuming, and automatic monitoring currently relies on equipment that is difficult to use in an on-farm setting without itself influencing range use. We evaluated the performance of a novel small, light and readily portable light-based monitoring system by validating its output against direct observations. Six commercial houses (2000 hens/house) and their adjacent ranges were used, three of which were equipped with more structures on the range than the others (to determine whether cover would influence monitoring accuracy). In each house, 14 hens were equipped with light monitoring devices for 5 discrete monitoring cycles of 7 to 8 consecutive days (at 20, 26, 32, 36 and 41 weeks of age). Light levels were determined each minute: if the reading on the hen-mounted device exceeded indoor light levels, the hen was classified as outside. Focal hens were observed directly for 5 min/hen per week. Accuracy (% of samples where monitoring and direct observations were in agreement) was high both for ranges with more and with fewer structures, although slightly better for the latter (92% v. 96% ± 1 SEM, F1,19 = 5.2, P = 0.034). Furthermore, accuracy increased over time (89%, 94%, 95%, 98% ± 1 SEM for observations at 26, 32, 36 and 41 weeks, respectively, F3,19 = 3.2, P = 0.047), probably due to progressively reduced indoor light levels resulting from partial closing of ventilation openings to sustain indoor temperature. Light-based monitoring was sufficiently accurate to indicate a tendency for a greater percentage of monitored time spent outside when more range structures were provided (more: 67%, fewer: 56%, SEM: 4, $\chi_1^2 = 2.9$, P = 0.089). Furthermore, clear and relatively consistent individual differences were detected. Individuals that were caught outside at the start of the experiment ranged more throughout its duration (caught outside: 72%, caught inside 51%, SEM: 4, $\chi_1^2 = 10.0$, P = 0.002), and individual range use was correlated between monitoring cycles (for adjacent monitoring cycles: $r_s^2 = 0.5-0.7$, P < 0.0001). This emphasizes the importance of studying range use on an individual level. In conclusion, our light-based monitoring system can assess individual range use accurately (although accuracy was affected by house characteristics to some extent) and was used to show that both cover availability and individual characteristics affected range use.

Ventenata [Ventenata dubia (Leers) Cross] is a winter annual grass relatively new to the inland Pacific Northwest that is capable of displacing desired vegetation. Indaziflam was evaluated for the management of V. dubia on two Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) sites near Moscow, ID, and Pullman, WA. While perennial grasses were dormant, applications of indaziflam in mixture with various herbicides were made in spring 2016. Treatment effects were evaluated for 2 yr by visual assessments of community composition and canopy cover of V. dubia and other non-weedy species (assessments occurred 3 to 6 mo after treatment, depending on location) and by representative cover class assessments. Biomass samples of all plant species were collected in the summer of 2017. Reduced V. dubia cover was observed in 2016, except when glyphosate was used alone. In 2017 indaziflam applied alone or in mixture with rimsulfuron effectively controlled V. dubia with minimal impact on desirable vegetation. Plant biomass from nontreated plots averaged 40 g m−2 for V. dubia and 100 to 179 g m−2 for perennial grasses. Plant biomass averaged <11 g m−2 for V. dubia and 371 to 490 g m−2 for perennial grasses when indaziflam at 102 g ai ha−1 plus glyphosate at 474 g ai ha−1 was applied. Smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss.) biomass was positively associated with the reduction of V. dubia, and there was a decrease in diversity associated with the removal of V. dubia through effective treatments. Indaziflam is an effective tool for the management of V. dubia in perennial grass stands, and spring applications of indaziflam should be in mixture with herbicides with POST activity.

In this paper, we revisit the Earnings, Cover (the ratio of earnings over dividends) and Price/Earnings (P/E) Ratio models which we introduced in Part 4 of this series. Although we suggested that the significant decline in the Earnings Index over 2015-2016 might be followed by dividends and share prices, this has not happened. Instead, Earnings have risen substantially over the years 2016 to 2018. Therefore, we revise our models based on the updated data and compare the new set of models with the one in Part 4 as well as with themselves. We then compare different methods for forecasting Dividends and Share Prices.

Grape hyacinth is a perennial bulbous species in the Liliaceae. It is commonly grown as an ornamental plant, but it can spread into agricultural fields and become weedy, potentially interfering with harvest and fall-planted crops. There has been limited research on controlling grape hyacinth in cropping systems. Fall and spring applied field-research studies were conducted to determine grape hyacinth control with herbicides labeled for use in wheat or winter fallow before planting soybean. Among fall-applied herbicides, paraquat resulted in the greatest initial grape hyacinth control (90% to 100%). Grape hyacinth control, 16 months after application (MAA), was variable, but the top-performing treatments were glyphosate and metsulfuron plus paraquat, resulting in 65% and 50% control, respectively. After spring applications, grape hyacinth control in November (7 MAA) was variable, but top-performing treatments were glyphosate and metsulfuron, which resulted in at least 26% control. Spring-applied paraquat, carfentrazone, metsulfuron, and sulfosulfuron resulted in 73%, 68%, 69%, and 60% reductions in grape hyacinth bulb counts, compared with the nontreated control 7 MAA, and were the top-performing treatments. Despite product-label prohibitions on rotation to soybeans, no soybean yield reductions were observed from any treatment in either study. Single applications of certain herbicides in the fall or spring can result in good control (>80%) of grape hyacinth initially, but long-term control is poor, and additional research is required.

In this paper, we develop an extension to the Wilkie model, introducing share earnings and cover (earnings/dividends) as new variables, and deriving share dividends from them. Earnings are available from April 1962, but only for the Non-Financial index, and for the All-Share one only from 1992. We construct a Composite Earnings Index from these series. We then find a suitable annual time series model for changes in earnings, and then for cover, which is mean-reverting. We compare this new model with the original model, in which changes in dividends were modelled directly. We also investigate monthly data to give parameters for stochastic interpolation. We observe an unusual change in earnings over 2015–2016, consider the implications of this and show specimen simulations.

During 1989 and 1990, herbicides were applied to suppress common bermudagrass in a mixed stand of common bermudagrass and ‘Emerald’ zoysiagrass. When the mixed stand was treated with fluazifop at 0.2 kg ha-1 mid-May and 0.1 kg ha-1 1 mo later for two consecutive years, the common bermudagrass cover was reduced from 35 to 7% and the zoysiagrass cover increased from 65 to 85%. Similar results were achieve when fenoxaprop was applied at 0.2 kg ha-1 mid-May and repeated at monthly intervals for a total of four applications each year for 2 yr. The quality of mixed common bermudagrass and zoysiagrass turf was reduced immediately after each treatment; however, zoysiagrass recovered and treatments did not result in permanent damage. Sethoxydim suppressed common bermudagrass during the second year of treatment, but reduced the zoysiagrass stand each year. Ethofumesate applied along or with flurprimidol severely reduced the zoysiagrass stand with an increase of common bermudagrass.

Western juniper has been actively invading sagebrush plant communities for about 130 yr. Western juniper canopy cover generally increases as western juniper invades sagebrush steppe communities and succession progresses toward a western juniper woodland. Our goal was to estimate the impact of juniper invasion and canopy increase on understory vegetation structure and productivity on 101 sites in northeastern California. The primary objectives of this study were to: (1) examine the influence of increasing western juniper canopy cover on the composition and productivity of understory vegetation; and (2) assess the effects of western juniper removal on understory vegetation. Sites in early, mid-, and late successional stages and sites on the same soils that had not been invaded were selected. Sites where western juniper had been removed by prescribed fire, mechanical, or chemical methods were compared to adjacent untreated sites. Western juniper canopy cover, understory cover and species composition, productivity, and bare ground were determined at each site during May through July 2005 and 2006. Regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between western juniper canopy cover and understory vegetation parameters. Logistic regression was used to detect understory differences between treated (juniper removed) and untreated (juniper not removed) sites. A significant relationship was found between western juniper canopy cover and understory species richness, shrub cover, forb cover, total grass cover, cheatgrass cover, herbaceous productivity, and bare ground. Removal of western juniper increased total grass cover, cheatgrass cover, and productivity, and reduced bare ground. The results of this study support findings by researchers in other states that western juniper influences plant community structure and productivity, and removal of western juniper might reverse these changes in structure, but also might increase opportunities for invasion of cheatgrass.

Invasive aquatic weeds negatively affect biodiversity, fluvial dynamics, water quality, and water storage and conveyance for a variety of human resource demands. In California's Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta, one submersed species—Brazilian egeria—and one floating species—waterhyacinth—are actively managed to maintain navigable waterways. We monitored the spatial and temporal dynamics of these species and their communities in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta using airborne hyperspectral data and assessed the effect of herbicide treatments used to manage these species from 2003 to 2007. Each year, submersed aquatic plant species occupied about 12% of the surface area of the Delta in early summer and floating invasive plant species occupied 2 to 3%. Since 2003, the coverage of submersed aquatic plants expanded about 500 ha, whereas the coverage of waterhyacinth was reduced. Although local treatments have reduced the coverage of submersed aquatic plants, Delta-wide cover has not been significantly reduced. Locally, multiyear treatments could decrease submersed aquatic plants spread, given that no residual plants outside the treated area were present. In contrast, the spread of waterhyacinth either has been constant or has decreased over time. These results show that (1) the objectives of the Egeria densa Control Program (EDCP) have been hindered until 2007 by restrictions imposed on the timing of herbicide applications; (2) submersed aquatic plants appeared to function as ecosystem engineers by enabling spread to adjacent areas typically subject to scouring action; (3) repeated herbicide treatment of waterhyacinth has resulted in control of the spread of this species, which also appears to have facilitated the spread of waterprimrose and floating pennywort. These results suggest that management of the Delta aquatic macrophytes may benefit by an ecosystem-level implementation of an Integrated Delta Vegetation Management and Monitoring Program, rather than targeting only two problematic species.

A left $R$-module $M$ (resp. right $R$-module $N$) is called $\mathcal{E}$-injective (resp. $\mathcal{E}$-flat) if $\text{Ext}_{R}^{1}\left( G,\,M \right)\,=\,0$ (resp. $\text{Tor}_{1}^{R}\left( N,\,G \right)\,=\,0$) for any $G\,\in \,\mathcal{E}$. Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a covering subcategory. We prove that a left $R$-module $M$ is $\mathcal{E}$-injective if and only if $M$ is a direct sum of an injective left $R$-module and a reduced $\mathcal{E}$-injective left $R$-module. Suppose $\mathcal{F}$ is a preenveloping subcategory of right $R$-modules such that ${{\mathcal{E}}^{+}}\,\subseteq \,\mathcal{F}$ and ${{\mathcal{F}}^{+}}\,\subseteq \,\mathcal{E}$. It is shown that a finitely presented right $R$-module $M$ is $\mathcal{E}$-flat if and only if $M$ is a cokernel of an $\mathcal{F}$-preenvelope of a right $R$-module. In addition, we introduce and investigate the $\mathcal{E}$-injective and $\mathcal{E}$-flat dimensions of modules and rings. We also introduce $\mathcal{E}$-(semi)hereditary rings and $\mathcal{E}$-von Neumann regular rings and characterize them in terms of $\mathcal{E}$-injective and $\mathcal{E}$-flat modules.

Habitat loss and fragmentation are affecting populations of forest dwelling mammalian carnivores worldwide. In southern Chile, a biodiversity hotspot, anthropogenic activities have resulted in high loss of native forest cover. The guiña, or kodkod cat, Leopardus guigna is a small forest-dwelling felid with a narrow range in the temperate forest of southern Chile. The few existing studies of the species have suggested that it is almost exclusively restricted to large tracts of native forest. This paper reports a study in the temperate forest within a fragmented Andean piedmont landscape which demonstrates that smaller forest fragments in the farmland matrix are playing a key role in the persistence of the guiña. We estimated occupancy in both continuous native forest and remnant forest fragments and, with single-species/single-season models, evaluated the extent to which forest cover, habitat type and proximity to protected areas have a modulating effect on occupancy. A continuous survey during 2008–2009, in three seasons of 90–100 days each, accumulated 6,200 camera trap days and returned 47 photographs of guiña. Total detection in fragments was higher than in continuous forests, with detection confirmed in almost 70% of studied fragments. We found that probability of a site being occupied significantly increased with forest cover (adult/secondary forest, scrubland) and probability was low (< 0.2) in sites with < 50% of surrounding forest cover. Our study highlights the importance of remnant forest fragments in the mosaic of extensive agriculture for the spatial dynamics of a guiña population and hence for the future conservation of the species.

We study the existence of some covers and envelopes in the chain complex category of R-modules. Let (𝒜,ℬ) be a cotorsion pair in R-Mod and let ℰ𝒜 stand for the class of all exact complexes with each term in 𝒜. We prove that (ℰ𝒜,ℰ𝒜⊥) is a perfect cotorsion pair whenever 𝒜 is closed under pure submodules, cokernels of pure monomorphisms and direct limits and so every complex has an ℰ𝒜-cover. As an application we show that every complex of R-modules over a right coherent ring R has an exact Gorenstein flat cover. In addition, the existence of -covers and -envelopes of special complexes is considered where and denote the classes of all complexes with each term in 𝒜 and ℬ, respectively.

We describe the structure of finitely generated cotorsion modules over commutative noetherian rings. Also we characterize the so-called covering morphisms between finitely generated modules over these rings.

Let $\mathrm{F}$ be a non-Archimedean locally compact field and let $\mathrm{D}$ be a central $\mathrm{F}$-division algebra. We prove that any positive level supercuspidal irreducible representation of the group $\mathrm{GL}_m(\mathrm{D})$ is compactly induced from a representation of a compact mod centre open subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_m(\mathrm{D})$. More precisely, we prove that such representations contain a maximal simple type in the sense of Bushnell and Kutzko.

Certain classes of smoothly approximable structures — the class of affine covers of Lie geometries — are shown to have the amalgamation property. In particular, this shows that any affine cover of a Lie geometry has the small index property.

Evidence is presented for a late Proterozoic, tectonothermal event which affected the rocks of the Moine assemblage in the Central Highland region of the Scottish Caledonides c. 750 Ma ago. This is about 200 Ma before the early Palaeozoic Grampian orogeny, whose effects are superimposed on the Moine rocks as well as dominating the tectonism in the Dalradian Supergroup.

Field and isotopic studies are integrated in zones of ductile thrusting (sliding) which are typified by belts of tectonic schists with related swarms of quartz and muscovite-bearing pegmatite veins. Of particular significance is a ductile thrust (the Grampian slide) which separates deeper crustal rocks (the Central Highland division), interpreted as showing the imprint of the Grenville orogeny, from shallower rocks (the Grampian division) representing a supracrustal assemblage formed between the Grenville and the c. 750 Ma events.

The Grampian slide is the structurally highest member of a system of related, previously unrecorded slides affecting the Central Highland division. New structural, petrographic and Rb-Sr isotopic data, obtained largely from a recently recognised inlier of the Central Highland division at Laggan, bear out that the quartz and pegmatite veins are segregations formed during ductile shearing under amphibolite facies conditions. Muscovites from these veins yield ages between 780 and 730 Ma, and a regression analysis of tectonic schists and the muscovites gives an age of 740 ± 40 Ma. These data substantiate our previous hypothesis that the deeper-seated Moine rocks were affected by a distinct orogenic event at 750 ± 30 Ma.

In the Northern Highlands, similar vein swarms are related to the Sgurr Beag slide and to belts of previously unrecorded tectonic schists in the Glenfinnan division of the Moine assemblage. A new, 755 ± 8 Ma age obtained from such a tectonic schist at Kinloch Hourn, combined with previous, similar age data from lensoid pegmatites, imply that the c. 750 Ma event may have also affected the Morar and Glenfinnan divisions.
