South American species of small minnow mayflies (Insecta : Ephemeroptera : Baetidae) that have been previously placed in Baetis Leach or Pseudocloeon Klapálek are revised. Species that resided in Baetis are shown to include Camelobaetidius alcyoneus, n. comb., C. coveloae, n. comb., C. dryops, n. comb., C. tantillus, n. comb., Cloeodes nocturnus, n. comb., C. stelzneri, n. comb., Fallceon inops, n. comb., F. murphyae, n. comb., F. yaro, n. comb., Moribaetis aneto, n. comb., M. comes, n. comb., and M. socius, n. comb. Species that resided in Pseudocloeon are shown to include Americabaetis albinervis, n. comb., A. bridarolli, n. comb., A. bruchi, n. comb., A. jorgenseni, n. comb., A. oldendorffi, n. comb., A. peterseni, n. comb., A. weiseri, n. comb., Cloeodes turbinops, n. comb., and C. venezuelensis, n. comb. The bases of the revisions are discussed under each species. The presence of Fallceon and Moribaetis in South America is confirmed for the first time.

Cryptonymphacopiosa n. gen. and n.sp., from Brazil, is distinguished by long, robust, pilose setae on the medial margin of the prosthecae; apically narrow glossae and paraglossae ; absence of hindwingpads ; and long, basally narrow gill 1. Rivudiva n. gen., includingR. minantenna n.sp., from Brazil, and R. trichobasis n.sp., from Brazil and Paraguay, is distinguished by a broad linguaand relatively narrow superlinguae ; broad glossae with a distomedial row of long, robust, falcate, simple setae ; and tarsal clawswith minute denticles arranged in an ellipse. Spiritiops silvudus n.gen. and n. sp., from Brazil and French Guyana, is distinguishedby a long, robust, pilose seta arising from the medial margin of the right prostheca and tarsal claws with two rows of denticlesand lateral long, fine, simple seta. Varipes lasiobrachius n. gen. and n. sp., from Colombia and Ecuador, is distinguished bythe reduced right prostheca and U-shape arrangement of denticles on the tarsal claws. Zelusia principalis n. gen. and n. sp., fromBrazil and Colombia, is distinguished by a medially raised labrum, bifid right prostheca, and long, slender maxillary palps.

Les travaux sur l'élevage des poissons Siluroidei originaires d'Amérique du Sud sont rares et se situent, pour la plupart, au niveau expérimental; cependant le potentiel de ces espèces dans le développement de l'aquaculture dans cette région est considérable. L'essentiel de l'information disponible concerne la reproduction induite. Des méthodes de reproduction contrôlée ont été établies pour plusieurs espèces, comme Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, P. coruscans, Leiarius marmoratus, Sorubim lima. Pimelodus blochii, Calophysus macropterus, Rhamdia sapo (Pimelodidae) et Eremophylus mutisii (Trichomycteridae). Pour les Siluroidei dont le corps est couvert de plaques osseuses, Hoplosternum littorale (Callichthyidae) et Hypostomus sp (Loricariidae) peuvent aussi être mentionnés, de même que Arius herzbergii (Ariidae) pour les espèces d'origine marine. Chez les Pimelodidae, les techniques d'incubation sont similaires à celles habituellement employées avec succès pour les autres espèces de tendance rhéophile, du fait de la nature pélagique des œufs (flottants ou semi-flottants), d'une fécondité élevée et d'une absence de soins parentaux. L'élevage des larves et des juvéniles est reconnu comme la phase la plus critique de la gestion de l'élevage de ces poissons-chats. Ceci résulte principalement de la qualité des aliments et un mode de distribution, et d'un important cannibalisme. Les données sur la production et la commercialisation des alevins restent limitées vraisemblablement parce que la production n'est pas consolidée; celle-ci tend cependant à se mettre en place. en particulier pour les Pimelodidae, pour lesquels il existe une forte demande sur le marché des poissons d'ornement. Pour réduire le cannibalisme et ses conséquences chez des espèces d'importance économique, la production d'hybrides entre espèces de Pimelodidae piscivores et omnivores a été tentée avec un certain succès pour les croisements suivants : P. fasciatum, L. marmoratus, P. blochii, Practocephalus hemiliopterus, P. blochi, P. fasciatum. Les résultats montrent une bonne compatibilité génétique.La production piscicole des Siluroidei d'Amérique du Sud reste très faible. Les statistiques de pêche se rapportant à ces poissons sont incomplètes, voire inexistantes dans la région. L'élevage des espèces sud-américaines de poissons-chats pourra se dèvelopper lorsque leurs cycles biologiques en captivité seront mieux maîtrisés. l'élevage larvaire notamment, et lorsque les paramètres économiques conditionnant la rentabilité des exploitations auront été mieux évalués.

The genus Paracloeodes (Insecta : Ephemeroptera : Baetidae) is newly reported from South America. Because of the discovery of species with hindwings and other characteristics not previously associated with Paracloeodes, a redescription of the genus is provided. Cladistic data suggest a South American center of origin for this Panamerican genus. Paracloeodes binodulus,n. sp., is described from larvae from northern Brazil, and is distinguished by the lack of hindwingpads and presence of small mesonotal tubercles. Paracloeodes eurybranchus n. sp., is described from larvae and female adults from north-central Argentina and southeastern Brazil; it is distinguished as larvae by the relatively large size, hindwingpads, and medially broad gills. Paracloeodes ibicui, n. sp., is described from a mature larva collected from Paraguay, and is distinguished by hindwingpads andabdominal coloration. Paracloeodes leptobranchus, n. sp., is described from larvae from Paraguay and southeastern Brazil, and is distinguished by relatively large size, hindwingpads, and slender gills.

L'histologie des gonades de 187 mâles et 149 femelles de Myleus ternetzi pêchés dans des rivières guyanaises a été étudiée. Les stades et le cycle de la spermatogenèse ont été analysés à l'aide d'une méthode téréologique. L'ovogenèse a été étudiée et le stade de maturation de chaque femelle déterminé. La vitellogenèse est discontinue et au moins trois pontes pourraient avoir lieu lors de la saison de reproduction. La fécondité relative est d'environ 10 000 ovocytes par kilogramme par ponte. Bien que aptes à se reproduire toute l'année, la plupart des Myleus ternetzi se reproduiraient juste avant la grande saison des pluies.

Thirty eight Satanoperca aff. leucosticta were collected in French Guyana rivers and the histology of the gonads was studied. While the structure of the ovaries follows the general pattern known for other cichlids, previtellogenic oocytes are present in the outer layer of all the testes, whatever the spermatogenetic stage. These oocytes never grow nor mature. Histological observation of all of the gonads has not revealed whether this cichlid is hermaphroditic or gonochoristic.

Genetic differentiation was studied among Leporinus friderici, L. granti, L. lebaili and L. affinis steyermarki, neotropical fish of the anostomid family found in French Guiana, using starch-gel protein electrophoresis. Fifteen enzymatic proteins representing twenty loci have been screened. This revealed marked genetic differences between these species, which are hardly morphologically discernable and indicates they are reproductively isolated. Diagnostic loci for unequivocal species identification have been found and will allow establishment of pure breeding stocks for planned aquaculture of Leporinus species.

Specimens belonging to 20 species (7 families) of catfishes have been collected in French Guyana. The anatomy and histology of the male reproductive tracts have been studied. In the most primitivespecies (Helogeneidae, Ariidae) no seminal vesicle is present in the males. In the Pimelodidae,Loricariidae and Callichthyidae (and also in an african Bagridae), there is a progressive transition, going from anterior to posterior in the male tract, from testicular tissue towards round germ cell-free tubules and finally to seminal vesicular tissue. All these families produce round-headed spermatozoa and have external fertilization. The Auchenipteridae and Ageneiosidae are characterized by elongated sperm nuclei, internal fertilization with the aid of a gonopodium and sperm storage in the ovaries. In the Auchenipteridae there is a clear-cut distinction between testes and seminal vesicles. In the Ageneiosidae there is no seminal vesicle, but the dilated deferent duct displays a high secretory activity. Depending on the family and species, the seminal vesicles may carry out either one or both of the two main functions: secretion and sperm storage. In addition, in some species, sperm is also stored in one or two accessory pouches until fertilization. The trends that we have observed in the changes in the organization of the reproductive tracts are in agreement with the hypotheses proposed for catfish evolution from comparative anatomical data.

Males of Myleus ternetzi, at various maturation stages were netted in a French Guyana river. Testes were histologically and ultrastructurally analysed. Leydig cells were always present in large numbers. In mature or almost mature testes, they were characterized by a large spherical nucleus and an extensively developed smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) composed of very narrow tightly packed tubules. In regressed testes, most of the Leydig cells had a smaller nucleus with an irregular shape, a disorganized SER and the fine structure of the mitochondria was greatly affected. These changes would reflect different phases throughout a metabolic cycle in relation to spermatogenesis.

L'ichthyofaune continentale de la Guyane française comprend environ 330 espèces dulçaquicoles. Plusieurs d'entre elles possèdent des caractéristiques biologiques propices à leur élevage. Deux cypriniformes, Myleus rhomboidalis, et Leporinus friderici, trois perciformes, Astronotus ocellatus, Cichla ocellaris et Plagioscion squamosissimus, ainsi que trois siluriformes, Hoplosternum littorale, Brachyplatystoma vaillantii et Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, sont présentés dans ce texte. Ces espèces peuvent convenir à différents systèmes d'aquaculture.
