An efficient adaptive time stepping method is proposed for transient dynamic response analysis, which is frequently encountered in civil engineering and elsewhere. The reduced problem following the spatial discretisation can be discretised in the time by a C0-continuous discontinuous Galerkin method, and the adaptive time stepping strategy is based on optimal a posteriori error estimates developed using the energy method. Some numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

An adaptive multi-penalty discontinuous Galerkin method (AMPDG) for the diffusion problem is considered. Convergence and quasi-optimality of the AMPDG are proved. Compared with the analyses for the adaptive finite element method or the adaptive interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method, extra works are done to overcome the difficulties caused by the additional penalty terms.

This paper aims at a general guideline to obtain a posteriori error estimates for the finite element error control in computational partial differential equations. In the abstract setting of mixed formulations, a generalised formulation of the corresponding residuals is proposed which then allows for the unified estimation of the respective dual norms. Notably, this can be done with an approach which is applicable in the same way to conforming, nonconforming and mixed discretisations. Subsequently, the unified approach is applied to various model problems. In particular, we consider the Laplace, Stokes, Navier-Lamé, and the semi-discrete eddy current equations.

A Raviart-Thomas mixed finite element discretization for general bilinear optimal control problems is discussed. The state and co-state are approximated by lowest order Raviart-Thomas mixed finite element spaces, and the control is discretized by piecewise constant functions. A posteriori error estimates are derived for both the coupled state and the control solutions, and the error estimators can be used to construct more efficient adaptive finite element approximations for bilinear optimal control problems. An adaptive algorithm to guide the mesh refinement is also provided. Finally, we present a numerical example to demonstrate our theoretical results.

We consider the symmetric FEM-BEM coupling for the numerical solution of a (nonlinear)interface problem for the 2D Laplacian. We introduce some new a posteriorierror estimators based on the (h − h/2)-errorestimation strategy. In particular, these include the approximation error for the boundarydata, which allows to work with discrete boundary integral operators only. Using theconcept of estimator reduction, we prove that the proposed adaptive algorithm isconvergent in the sense that it drives the underlying error estimator to zero. Numericalexperiments underline the reliability and efficiency of the considered adaptivemesh-refinement.

This paper presents some aspects of the behavior of hydraulically actuated heavy duty manipulators. This category of manipulators is used extensively in large resource based industries and any improvement in efficiency may result in major financial benefits. In this paper an adaptive control algorithm is used for a two rigid link manipulator driven by hydraulic actuators. The dynamic model of the manipulator is derived as well as the models of the hydraulic actuators including compliance, dead time and full dynamics of the servo valves. An adaptive control algorithm is considered since changes occur on-line in the system's parameters. The adaptive algorithm used is Generalized Predictive Control (GPC). The GPC uses a controlled autoregressive integrated moving average (CARIMA) type model and a cost function that minimizes a predicted future output error and future weighted control inputs to the plant, resulting in a sequence of future control increments. The procedure, in this work, does not separate the hydraulic actuator and the link dynamics into separate sub-systems, but controls them as one system. The changes in the system's parameters due to the hydraulics or the link dynamics can be estimated and the coefficients of the model adjusted without the necessity of identifying the exact cause of the changes.

It was found in this work that the variations of the GPC control horizon can lead to faster response during transients and significantly reduced overshoot in the nonlinear hydraulic actuation system. An on-line change of the maximum output horizon is also introduced.

This work shows the analysis and results of a two link manipulator with hydraulic actuators. It can be implemented on any hydraulically actuated manipulator with any number of links and actuators.

Numerical simulations are performed on a Vax 3200 computer and the results are presented.

Motivated by a problem in neural encoding, we introduce an adaptive (or real-time) parameter estimation algorithm driven by a counting process. Despite the long history of adaptive algorithms, this kind of algorithm is relatively new. We develop a finite-time averaging analysis which is nonstandard partly because of the point process setting and partly because we have sought to avoid requiring mixing conditions. This is significant since mixing conditions often place restrictive history-dependent requirements on algorithm convergence.

One of the main tools in the proof of residual-based a posteriori error estimates is a quasi-interpolation operator due to Clément. We modify this operator in the setting of a partition of unitywith the effect that the approximation error has a local average zero.This results in a new residual-based a posteriori error estimate with a volume contribution which is smaller than in the standard estimate.For an elliptic model problem, we discuss applications to conforming, nonconforming and mixed finite element methods.

The minimization of nonconvex functionals naturally arises inmaterials sciences where deformation gradients in certain alloys exhibitmicrostructures. For example, minimizing sequences of the nonconvexEricksen-James energy can be associated with deformations in martensitic materials thatare observed in experiments[2,3]. — From the numericalpoint of view, classical conforming and nonconforming finite elementdiscretizations have been observed to give minimizerswith their quality being highlydependent on the underlying triangulation, see [8,24,26,27] for a survey. Recently, a newapproach has been proposed and analyzed in [15,16]that is based on discontinuous finite elements to reduce the pollution effectof a general triangulation on the computed minimizer.The goal of the present paper isto propose and analyzean adaptive method,giving a more accurate resolution of laminated microstructure on arbitrary grids.

We explore a dynamic approach to the problems of call admission and resource allocation for communication networks with connections that are differentiated by their quality of service requirements. In a dynamic approach, the amount of spare resources is estimated on-line based on feedbacks from the network's quality of service monitoring mechanism. The schemes we propose remove the dependence on accurate traffic models and thus simplify the tasks of supplying traffic statistics required of network users. In this paper we present two dynamic algorithms. The objective of these algorithms is to find the minimum bandwidth necessary to satisfy a cell loss probability constraint at an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch. We show that in both schemes the bandwidth chosen by the algorithm approaches the optimal value almost surely. Furthermore, in the second scheme, which determines the point closest to the optimal bandwidth from a finite number of choices, the expected learning time is finite.
