We prove that the conservativity of the geodesic flow is equivalent to the ergodicity of the geodesic flow with respect to the Bowen-Margulis measure on visibility manifolds.

For a two parameter family of C3 diffeomorphisms having a homoclinic orbit of tangency derived from a horseshoe, the relationship between the measure of the parameter values at which the diffeomorphism (restricted to a certain compact invariant set containing the horseshoe) is not expansive and the Hausdorff dimension of the horseshoe associated to the homoclinic orbit of tangency is investigated. This is a simple application of the Newhouse-Palis-Takens-Yoccoz theory.

It is proved that for every diffeomorphism f on a surface satisfying Axiom A, f is in the C2-interior of the set of all diffeoomorphisms having the shadowing property if and only if f satisfies the strong transversality condition.

We consider the C*-algebras constructed from certain hyperbolic dynamical systems. The construction, due to Ruelle, generalizes the C*-algebras of Cuntz and Krieger. We discuss relations between the C*-algebras, show the existence of natural asymptotically abelian systems and investigate the K-theory and E-theory of these C*-algebras.

The notion of expansive homeomorphism is important in topological dynamics and continuum theory. In this paper, a new kind of homeomorphism will be introduced and studied, namely the continuum-wise expansive homeomorphism. The class of continuum-wise expansive homeomorphisms is much larger than the one of expansive homeomorphisms. In fact, the class of continuum-wise expansive homeomorphisms contains many important homeomorphisms which often appear in "chaotic" topological dynamics and continuum theory, but which are not expansive homeomorphisms. For example, the shift maps of Knaster's indecomposable chainable continua are continuum-wise expansive homeomorphisms, but they are not expansive homeomorphisms. Also, there is a continuum-wise expansive homeomorphism on the pseudoarc. We study several properties of continuum-wise expansive homeomorphisms. Many theorems concerning expansive homeomorphisms will be generalized to the case of continuum-wise expansive homeomorphisms.
