The daring vision of using big data technology to substantially advance the scientific understanding of human nature, individually and socially, and possibly solve age-old challenges of bridging the subjective and objective sides of human nature, rests on substantial assumptions about the concept of a human being. The daring big data vision may at the same time, in itself, serve to change the very concept of a human, regardless of how well the vision’s assumptions and prospects hold up to scrutiny. This issue of the European Review presents an attempt to critically engage with the question of how this complex situation affects the content and prospects of the vision of reconsidering humanity with the help of big data. In this introduction, the landscape of the issue is sketched and some general remarks of where the emerging map might take future research are made. In general, even if the assumptions of the daring big data vision turn out wanting, pragmatic factors may very well transform our own image of ourselves to fit it.

Replacing liquid by solid state electrolytes has the potential to significantly improve current Li ion batteries concerning performance and safety. The material class NZP, based on the compound NaZr2(PO4)3, exhibits a structural framework suitable for ionic conduction. In this work, a systematic compositional screening and simulation approach, combining classical molecular-dynamics, first-principles calculations, and structural analysis was applied, with which a set of new Li ion conducting NZP compounds could be identified.

Summary
Abstract
The Milner-Damas typing algorithm W is one of the classic algorithms in computer science. In this paper we describe a formalized soundness and completeness proof for this algorithm. Our formalization is based on names for both term and type variables, and is carried out in Isabelle/HOL using the Nominal Datatype Package. It turns out that in our formalization we have to deal with a number of issues that are often overlooked in informal presentations of W.
“Alpha-conversion always bites you when you least expect it.”
A remark made by Xavier Leroy when discussing with us the informal proof about W in his PhD thesis.
Introduction
Milner's polymorphic type system for ML is probably the most influential programming language type system. The second author learned about it from a paper by Clément et al. He was immediately taken by their view that type inference can be viewed as Prolog execution, in particular because the Isabelle system, which he had started to work on, was based on a similar paradigm as the Typol language developed by Kahn and his coworkers. Milner himself had provided the explicit type inference algorithm W and proved its soundness. Completeness was later shown by Damas and Milner. Neither soundness nor completeness of W are trivial because of the presence of the Let-construct (which is not expanded during type inference).

This paper examines artifact distributions and chemical analysis of anthropogenic sediments by ICP-AES spectroscopy from the main civic-ceremonial plaza at the Late Classic (ca. AD 700-900) site of El Coyote in northwestern Honduras. Based on ethnoarchaeological comparisons drawn from a phosphate study of plaza soils in the nearby modern-day town of Petoa, spatial aspects of the organization of communal feasting are inferred for El Coyote.
