This note records a number of observations of orientation of current-bedding in the Moine Series of Inverness-shire, Wester Ross and Sutherland, in the North-Western Highlands of Scotland. The foreset beds have been found to have a dominant dip towards the north, thus suggesting that the Currents responsible for the transport of the material forming these beds flowed from the south.

It is considered that some fossils, e.g. Orbulina and Miogypsina, are good indicators that beds containing them are of post-Oligocene age, and that the ages of some beds in certain parts of the world require reconsideration; mention is made of successions in Morocco, Venezuela, and Peru. It is recommended that the use of the term “Aquitanian” be restricted to beds of basal Miocene age.

Hornblende-schists, probably intruded as dolerite sills, have been permeated by trondhjemitic material. Conversion to rocks of dioritic aspect is the end-stage of this process, but the intermediate stages are more common. The conversion has been effected with little displacement so that all varieties can be observed in their correct sequence.

It is shown that “Hutton's Unconformity” on the Isle of Arran has been misinterpreted. The assumed plane of unconformity is in reality the plane separating the Dalradian schists from the upper-most zone of schists impregnated with and cemented by calcareous material. The true plane of unconformity is situated some 4 feet above this plane.

Small quartzite xenoliths scattered throughout the granodiorite are mantled by broad mafic coronas, the inner part of which is composed largely of augite and the outer part mainly of hornblende. The formation of the coronas is examined and some general features of magmatic reaction with quartzite inclusions are discussed.

The Breconian stage of the Anglo-Welsh Old Red Sandstone is defined. The Breconian follows the Dittonian and precedes the Farlovian. In Breconshire, the Breconian comprises the Senni Beds and the overlying Brownstones. The Senni Beds have yielded a fauna and flora of Siegenian-Emsian age; the Brownstones are apparently unfossiliferous.

Records of certain trilobites and brachiopods illustrated in Charlesworth's Geology of Ireland are critically discussed.
