Whaling in the Antarctic, during the 1934–35 season, will be carried out on a scale comparable with that of the record season of three years ago. A large fleet, consisting of over twenty factory ships and some 140 whale catchers, and totalling approximately 270,000 tons, has left for the Antarctic whaling grounds, equipped with the most modern harpoon guns and refineries. The following are the names of some of the factory ships taking part: Antarctic, Hektoria, Kosmos II, Lancing, New Seville, Ole Wegger, Pelagos, Salvestria, Sir James Clark Ross, Skytteren, Solglimt, Southern Empress, Southern Princess, Sourabaya, Star 2, Star 12, Strombus, Suderoy, Svend Foyn, Tafelberg, Thorshammer, Torodd and Vestfold. All the more modern ships are equipped with oil-burning engines with the exception of Sir James Clark Ross, which is motor-driven.

It is pleasant to be able to record that the printing of the results of the Australasian Antarctic expedition of 1911–14 has been resumed. It will be remembered that the publication of these reports was greatly interfered with by the Great War. During the post-war years the reports were slowly issued from the Government Printing Office, Sydney; but, in 1930, in the absence of financial provision for continuing the work, the printing of the manuscripts was suspended. A resumption of the printing of these reports has now become possible through the good offices of the Minister of Education, Mr D. H. Drumond, largely owing to generous assistance from the Commonwealth Government.

One of the earliest of the Hudson's Bay Company's experiments in tractor transport work was at Rupert's House in 1924. The machine used was a Citroen modelled after the tractor-type machines which had given such excellent service in the Sahara. It was not successful, however, so details covering its operation would be of little interest.

The annual dinner of the Antarctic Club was held on January 18, when 37 members were present. The President, Commander J. B. Adams, after honouring the usual toasts of the Club, proposed that Admiral Sir E. R. G. R. Evans should be elected President for the coming year and this was carried. Dr H. R. Mill reviewed the events of the past year hi the Antarctic in a brilliant and humorous speech. There were present also at the dinner six representatives of the Arctic Club and the Club guests were Lieutenants Martin Lindsay and A. S. T. Godfrey of the Trans-Greenland Expedition.

In most of the years subsequent to the undue expansion of the season 1930–81, mutual agreements were reached between the whaling companies of most of the nations interested in whaling, whereby production was restricted. Owing partly to novel factors, including the increased number of nations participating in the industry, labour friction, and, most fundamental, the rapid rise in the price of whale oil, the achievement of any such arrangement for the season 1936–37 proved unusually difficult. The British and Norwegian Governments, accordingly, arrived at regulations binding on the nationals of each. These regulations curtailed Antarctic pelagic whaling to three months' duration commencing December 1; and in the course of discussion the factory ships to be employed were designated by name, and stations which should operate, and prescribed the number of catchers each might employ, and factory ships (with a few insignificant exceptions) working in the Antarctic were prohibited from operating also between the Equator and Lat. 40° S. These regulations did not affect Japanese or German whaling. The fleet, notwithstanding the limitations, was larger than in any other year since 1930. It included the powerful new factory, Terje Viken, under the British flag, equipped entirely with mechanical boilers; two Japanese and one German factory, and totalled in all thirty ships, served by 173 catchers; but for the regulations many more catchers would have been employed. It is noteworthy that for the first time since the revival of Southern whaling, of the men employed, some 700 were of British nationality. The production of oil was over 2,600,000 barrels or 430,000 tons.

The idea of forming the Association for the Study of Snow and Ice developed from the desire of the British members of the International Commissions of Snow and of Glaciers respectively to establish in this country a permanent body to encourage research on the practical and scientific problems of snow and ice, and generally to stimulate interest in the subject.

An Antarctic Society is being formed in America by some readers of the Little America Times, who desire to unite in a permanent group all those who are interested in the history and exploration of the Antarctic regions. The chief object of the new society is to act as a clearing house of information on Antarctica, to assist organisers and members of Antarctic expeditions, and to spread knowledge of the Antarctic regions. To this end the Society will collect books, reports, maps, photographs, etc., relating to the Antarctic, and it is hoped that much of the material obtained will be published in an Antarctic Magazine, to be brought out by the Society twice a year, the first issue of which will appear in April, 1935.
