  • Results of recent studies in population genetics provide significant evidence that genetic changes may occur in many small, isolated, preserve populations. The primary phenomena producing these changes will be inbreeding, genetic drift, and the ‘founder’ and ‘bottleneck’ effects. A permanent reduction in population vigour and in genetic diversity may result from these processes.

  • By 1973 the last populations of the Bush Elephant (Loxondonta africana africana) in the Republic of Rwanda comprised two small groups of ca 70 animals each. Both were surrounded by expanding human settlement which caused rising conflict between Elephants and Man. Eventually the elephants' removal became imperative. Adults (103) and unweaned immatures (3) were therefore shot.

  • Elms have long been important components of the forests and cities around the world. In the little-more-than-sixty years since it was first found in Europe in 1918, Dutch Elm Disease (DED) has killed millions of elms in Europe, Western Asia, and North America (Figs 6 & 7). The Far East is the only major area in the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere that has not had a DED problem. For this reason, and because many species that are native to the Far East are resistant to the Disease, it is thought that DED may have originated in the Orient.
