The traditional problem of the social contract defies solution. Agents with the motivations traditionally assumed would not in the circumstances traditionally assumed voluntarily arrive at a contract or voluntarily keep it up, as we can now understand, more clearly than our illustrious predecessors, by treating the problem in terms not available to them: the terms of Prisoner's Dilemma and of the theory of public goods.

Voilà une question dont l'examen permettra de réfléchir sur l'état de l'élaboration théorique en sociologie qui voudrait éviter des positions extrêmes et qui se cherche dès lors une nouvelle voie notamment entre une sociologie compréhensive de type phénoménologique et une sociologie positiviste de type behavioriste. Pour des raisons évidentes, il ne sera pas possible de traiter le thème par rapport à l'ensemble des travaux disponibles le concernant. On pourra par contre prendre à témoin un auteur qui passe aujourd'hui pour le théoricien en sociologie. II s'agit de Talcott Parsons. Pourquoi Talcott Parsons?

Puisqu'il faut nous limiter à un trés court espace, nous n'hésiterons pas à être synthétique et elliptique au point d'en être obscur, espérant que le lecteur rétablira quand il le faut la clarté analytique. Nous ne chercherons pas à élucider un point d'histoire, à savoir la part qu'il conviendrait d'accorder à l'influence de Malebranche dans les idées de Hume en matière de causalité, même s'il est vrai que toute la clarté désirable ou possible n'a pas été faite sur ce point. Hume a d'ailleurs expressément indiqué dans l'Inquiry (comme il l'avait laissé entendre dans le Treatise) qu'il tenait la critique malebranchiste de la causalité pour un acheminement vers la sienne, et il n'a pas hésité à lui emprunter un renfort d'arguments: ainsi en insistant sur l'impossibilité d'apercevoir un quelconque pouvoir causal soit dans les corps — pour expliquer les effets du choc par exemple, — soit dans l'âme — où notre volonté, malgré les illusions du contraire, ne se verrait mouvoir ni nos membres ni nos idées. Le seul tort de Malebranche aux yeux de Hume serait donc de ne pas être allé assez loin, puis d'être tombe dans l'inconsistance pour avoir conservé une attitude générale et un système incompatibles avec sa critique: car l'auteur de La Recherche de la Vérité, après avoir expulsé tout pouvoir causal du monde et de l'esprit, en rétablit en Dieu une infinité, et même s'appuie sur la causalité pour prouver l'existence du Tout-Puissant. Mais c'est ici que commence le probléme dont nous voulons traiter.

What is it for a person to mean something by an utterance? Until recently, few philosophers have explicitly set themselves the task of answering this question. Of those who have, most have proposed answers which in one way or another analyze the act of meaning by appeal to the utterer's intentions.

At the beginning of the third Section of the Groundwork, Kant appears to state the synthetic a priori proposition which it is the business of that Section to justify. It is: “An absolutely good will is one whose maxim can always have as its content itself considered as a universal law.” I shall contend that a consideration of Kant's use of analytic method shows that he is committed to regard this proposition not as synthetic, but rather as analytic. Hence, I shall contend that his statement of the proposition to be justified in the third Section is a slip, which hinders the study of the third Section and which, therefore, requires a textual emendation. Kant, I claim, does not attempt to justify this proposition but another.

On First view there seem to be many possible instances of knowers who lack knowledge of their knowledge. A self-deceiver seems capable of knowing his own faults without knowing that he knows them. A philosopher seems capable of knowing that there are physical objects around him without knowing that he has such knowledge. Deep-rooted insecurity seems capable of preventing a mathematician from knowing that he has just made a genuine discovery. A child seems capable of acquiring knowledge before acquiring the concept ‘knowledge’ and hence before being able to know that he knows.

Maximizers in isolated Prisoner's Dilemmas are doomed to frustration. But in Braybrooke's view maximizers might do better in a series, securing Pareto-optimal arrangements if not from the very beginning, at least eventually. Given certain favourable special conditions, it can be shown according to Braybrooke and shown even without question-begging motivational or value assumptions, that in a series of Dilemmas maximizers could manage to communicate a readiness to reciprocate, generate thereby expectations of reciprocation, and so give rise to optimizing reciprocations which, in due course, would reinforce expectations, the net result of all this being an increasingly stable practice to mutual benefit. In this way neighbours could learn to be good neighbours: they could learn to respect each other's property, to engage in reciprocal assistance, and perhaps even to make and keep promises covering a range of activities. So maximizers are, Braybrooke holds, capable of a society of sorts. Out of the ashes they might build something. But even under favourable conditions they could not build much and most conditions would defeat them almost entirely, for many-person Dilemmas whether isolated or in series would be quite beyond them, question-begging motivational assumptions aside. In settings at all like those in which we live, utility maximization assuming only ‘traditional’ motivation is self-defeating without remedy, and most certainly not an adequate basis for social life.' The probable inference from as a conception of individual rationality: for surely truly rational agents would be if not perfectly well designed at least better designed for communal living than utility maximizers would be assuming only ‘traditional’, non-question-begging values or motivation. Or, if this inference is denied and maximization is not challenged as a conception of rationality, we can conclude instead, Braybrooke has more recently suggested (p. 34, this issue), that the advice, ‘Be rational,’ is incomplete, and when addressed to groups should be supplemented by, ‘And be somewhat ‘untraditional’ in your values; respect at least some rules that would make coordination and cooperation possible even in many-person interaction problems.’

Avant d'examiner l'application du prédicat de «gratuit» et les circonstances psycho-sociales de ce qui est appelé «acte gratuit», je voudrais établir une définition tautologique du terme lui-même. La notion de gratuité réfère à une absence de fondement, soit au plan de l'origine (cause efficiente), soit au plan de la signification (finalité, valeur, cohérence, vérifiabilité). La gratuité, si l'on ne veut pas en faire une réalité substantielle, sera ainsi la propriété logique ou formelle de ce qui n'a pas de fondement, c'est-à-dire pas de cause, pas de valeur (valeur d'utilité tout spécialement) ou pas de sens qui lui donnerait un statut dans la réalité objectale ou phénoménale. Dans la mesure où l'on considère qu'il n'y a rien qui puisse être tel dans l'ensemble des objets qui nous entourent ou dans l'ensemble des événements qui surviennent dans notre réalité, la gratuité ne peut désigner proprement aucune réalité particulière.

In a Recent paper to The Joint Session of the AristotelianSociety and Mind Association Professor Neil MacCormick makes some interesting observations about the nature of promises and the source of the obligation to keep them. He rejects the view that an act can count as a promise only because a certain practice exists in a society. One may on the contrary well understand what promises are and know how to make them without there being any special convention making possible the speech act of promising which amounts to no more than …“an utterance of the speaker's about his own future conduct which is essentially characterized by the speaker's intending his addressee to take it as being intended to induce the addressee to rely upon the speaker's taking the action in question.” One needs no special rule to explain why promise-breaking is wrong for …“the fact of the addressee's reliance on the promisor is sufficient ground for asserting that the promisor has an obligation to keep his word.” To bring home the point, MacCormick contrasts promising with divorcing by the simple utterance of 'I divorce thee, I divorce thee.' This is intelligible as an act of divorcing only by presupposing a convention that allows a divorce to be effected in this way. In performing the act by the appropriate formula the person is invoking the conventional rules that must obtain in the society if the act is to be successful. Searle, we are told, fails to see that promises are quite different in that they …“are explicable in terms of an intention to bring about a specific perlocutionary effect, and an intention that that intention be recognized” It is neither here nor there to point out, as Searle does, that ‘I predict’ and ‘I intend’ like ‘I promise’ tend to create expectations for the effect a promise is intended to achieve is reliance and not simply an expectation.

Since some moral philosophers take inspiration from David Hume, and some think that there are moral questions to do with the relative status of the two sexes of humans, it is worth looking to Hume for assistance on this topic. His opinions are not explicit, for nowhere, to my knowledge, does he openly address the Woman Question. Nevertheless, I find that he exposes himself in three places. Consider them in turn.

La tâche en vaut la peine puisqu'elle nous permettrait d'apercevoir sous un éclairage différent /es racines de la philosophie existentielle, de même que l'intention première de Heidegger en tant qu'opposée à celle de Dilthey.

Begging the question — roughly, positing in the premises what is to be proved in the conclusion — is a perplexing fallacy.1 Are not question-begging arguments valid? Yes, we may find ourselves saying, but they are fallacious despite their validity, owing to their inability to establish the truth of a conclusion which is not already known. But are not question-begging arguments sometimes effective in bringing an audience to an awareness of the truth of the conclusion ? How can a dialectical maneuver which is capable of effecting epistemic progress be a fallacy, an illegitimate maneuver? In such cases of success, we can reply, the audience was simply in need of some logical coaching — a question-begging argument is of its very nature ill-suited for producing new knowledge in someone who is being fully rational. But then are not all valid arguments question-begging, since the conclusions are at least implicitly contained in the premises in such a way that a fully rational individual can never augment his knowledge through such arguments? No, we may answer, only those valid arguments in which the proposition constituting the conclusion appears, whether distinguised or not, as a distinct premise are question-begging; if several premises go together to imply a conclusion, the argument does not beg the question, But why is it legitimate to posit premises which more-or-less implicitly contain the conclusion, while it is illegitimate to posit premises which more-or-less explicitly contain the conclusion ? Because, we are tempted to say, a question-begging argument is one in which what is to be proved in the conclusion is posited in the premises, and this positing must be more-or-less explicit in order for a fallacy to be committed!

L'effort principal de Merleau-Ponty, au début de son cheminement philosophique, consiste à amener l'expérience perceptive à l'expression de son propre sens.

Pourquoi fallait-il commencer par le retour à l'expérience perceptive? Pour deux raisons qui finalement n'en font qu'une, mais dont la première fut plus explicitement reconnue par Merleau-Ponty au moment où il décida de consacrer ses thèses au problème de la perception. Il lui était évident, dès les années 1933–1934, que la perception est une forme d'expérience particulièrement mutilée et faussée par les philosophies d'inspiration criticiste qui l'interprétaient «comme une opération intellectuelle par laquelle des données inextensives (les «sensations») sont mises en relation et expliquées de telle sorte qu'elles finissent par constituer un univers objectif». Il est clair déjà que cette interprétation intellectualiste se base, par un côté, sur la conception empiriste des «sensations», et que la critique de l'intellectualisme devra être tout à la fois une critique de l'empirisme.

Ce texte comporte deux parties. Une première partie, dans laquelle nous situerons le problème de la métaphore à la jonction de la sémantique structurale, dont nous rappellerons quelques distinctions et définitions essentielles, et de la poétique et de la rhétorique générales, qui, l'une et l'autre, se fondent sur l'instauration, dans le langage, d'un écart dont nous essayerons de déterminer la nature. Puis, dans une seconde partie, nous exposerons les conditions de possibilité, au plan de la sémantique, de l'apparition de la synecdoque, de la métonymie et, bien évidemment, de la métaphore, qu'il s'agisse de la métaphore de nom ou de la métaphore non nominale, c'est-à-dire de la métaphore de verbe, d'adjectif, d'adverbe, de préposition ou même de phrase.

As Professor Burns has shown, even though Hume did not offer an explicit, exhaustive treatment of “The Women Question”, there are many (and, I would add, much more than three) passages in which he explains principles or facts related to the status of women. Generally speaking, and on this I fully agree with Professor Burns, the “Humean Female” qualifies as an expression of what we call today a male chauvinist position.

Pour le Maître du Lycée, si la vertu intellectuelle s'enseigne, c'est qu'elle est objet de science et qu'à ce titre elle «peut s'apprendre»': en effet, d'aprés lui, «toute science est susceptible d'être enseignée». Seulement, une telle prise de position implique l'existence de rapports etroits éntre l'aréte et l'épistémé. Or, les relations «vertu-science», longtemps avant Aristote, avaient déjà coincé plusieurs moralistes grecs. Les Anciens, effectivement, tenaient pour scandaleux l'échec de l'éducation chez les enfants issus de parents vertueux. Aussi, s'étaient-ils appliqués a découvrir l'explication d'un phénomène qui, à leurs yeux, traduisait l'une des données les plus complexes de la nature humaine et qui, par suite, mettait en jeu la sauvegarde et le progrés de celle-ci par le biais de l'éducation.

À Quelles conditions générales doit s'astreindre une épistémologie de l'histoire si elle veut réellement construire une théorie adéquate à la complexité de son objet? Dans l'énoncé même de cette question s'exprime, bien entendu, un jugement sur ce que les analyses épistémologiques de l'histoire ont, jusqu'à présent, généralement fourni. Ces analyses renvoient à des conceptions différentes des conditions générales d'une épistémologie de l'histoire. Nous nous proposons:

(1) d'examiner ces conceptions;

(2) d'avancer quelques propositions concernant les conditions générales d'une épistémologie de l'histoire plus féconde et plus adéquate à son objet.

Dans un compte rendu récent sur l'ouvrage de L. Paquet, Platon. La médiation du regard, paru dans Dialogue (XV, 1976, pp. 100–105), L. Brisson porte le jugement suivant sur les chapitres philosophiques de l'ouvrage: «Du point de vue philosophique, un relent de ce thomisme modernisé, pratiqué notamment par les membres du clergé catholique en France et au Québec entre 1900 et 1960, imprègne tout ce livre d'une façon occulte. Moins sensible, lorsqu'il s'agit de transposition chez A. Dies, cette orientation philosophique devient particulièrement insistante, lorsqu'il s'agit d'analogie chez P. Grenet. Or, P. Grenet et, de ce fait, L. Paquet ont tendance sinon à identifier, du moins à assimiler analogie et transposition. De ce fait, inconsciemment ou non, ils interprètent Platon à la lumière de Thomas d'Aquin».

Le manuscrit sur la Critique de la philosophie de l'État de Hegel fédigé par Marx à l'été de 1843 est demeuré inconnu de la tradition marxiste jusqu'en 1922, date ou le savant russe, David Rjazanov, l'a decouvert dans les archives du Parti Social-Démocrate à Berlin. Dans l'édition critique allemande de Dietz, le texte occupe 130 pages. II s'agit d'un texte ardu, difficile, voire meme rébarbatif. Marx recopie les paragraphes 261–313 de la Philosophic du Droit de Hegel pour en faire une critique détailléè, quelquefois brillante, souvent obscure et nebuleuse. Le texte peut etre divisé en quatre parties: la critique de la conception générate de l'État (Par. 261–274), la critique de la monarchic (Par. 275–286), du pouvoir exécutif (Par. 287–297) et du pouvoir legislatif (Par. 298–313). Mais comme l'écrit Marx dans une lettre en date du 5 mars 1842 à Arnold Ruge «le fond en est la réfutation de la monarchie constitutionnelle comme une chose bâtarde, contradictoire et qui se condamne elle-même». Notre propos prendra appui sur la premiere partie du texte, mais les conclusions auxquelles nous arriverons pourront s'étendre a l'ensemble du manuscrit.

It Seems that a major impetus to philosophical thought about volitional concepts — the concepts of action, purpose, choice, intention, deliberation, freedom, of the voluntary and the like — has often been a reflection on the discoveries and theories of science. Sometimes philosophy is stimulated by a broad-ranging scientific theory. Thus we have recently seen a flurry of debates about B.F. Skinner's Beyond Freedom and Dignity which challenges the validity of our commonsense notions and forces us to clarify and defend them or accept a drastic revision in our conception of ourselves and of human society. Sometimes, on the other hand, it is not a grand theory which excites our interest but rather a new discovery or the investigation of a particular type of phenomenon which generates some new problems or throws light on old ones.
