A review of gerontological literature on elder abuse and feminist literature on wife assault points to the conceptual and practice divisions that have separated attention to age and gender and, thus, obscured older women's experiences of abuse by their male partners. The first person account of a woman who left her abusive husband in her 70s and the supporting observations of a group of concerned service providers are introduced to bridge these conceptual divisions and to call attention to the social processes that hide and perpetuate wife assault in old age. With a view to developing methodologies and practices that make visible and challenge the conditions that sustain abuse of older women, directions for future approaches to research and service are considered.

Craik (1986) has proposed that age-related deficits on memory tasks are proportional to the extent to which these tasks require the use of self-initiated operations. Because the number of required self-initiated operations vary among traditional episodic memory tasks, these tasks should display a gradation of age-related deficits. The objective of this study was to test this hypothesis. A secondary analysis (i.e. based on the results of previous studies) was performed on 22 studies in which verbal stimuli were used as targets on more than one episodic memory task. Of the 24 comparisons provided by the studies, 21 supported the gradation concept. This result suggests that the self-initiated operation hypothesis is valid.

The recent introduction of new adult guardianship legislation in British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories signals the arrival of the third wave of guardianship law reform in Canada since the mid 1970s. The first wave appeared in Alberta in the form of the Dependent Adults Act which was replicated, in part, in Saskatchewan. The second wave affected only the Atlantic provinces and consisted of new adult protection legislation aimed primarily (but not solely) at cases of elder abuse or neglect. The third wave of reform involves, amongst other things, the enactment of omnibus adult guardianship statutes that include adult protection provisions. Some potential problems are examined including an untenable fusion of guardianship and protection procedures; an excessive reliance upon potentially expensive and fiscally vulnerable advocacy services; and an increase in abuse and neglect as a result of the removal of various “paternalistic” safeguards.

The purpose of this study is to estimate the reliability of the French version of the M.F.A.Q. method, a tool used to measure the physical health of the elderly. During the survey, four interviewers assessed 15 subjects each by using the M.F.A.Q. Following this, all 60 participants were evaluated two months later, this time without the subjects being present. In addition, a geriatric specialist also assessed the 60 questionnaires a posteriori. The results show an intra-rater reliability (a 96% performance rate within a 1-point difference on a scale of 6) and an inter-rater reliability (Kappas, on a scale from good to moderate; alpha of Cronbach = 0.93) which were acceptable. An analysis of the covariance reveals that age does not figure in the judgments. The authors express certain reservations, but conclude that this instrument of measurement is flexible, easy to administer, in addition to its metrological properties being satisfactory.

Victor Marshall's presentation of the social models of aging appears to be a rich inventory, but one which despite itself is a victim of the hegemony of the life course perspective. This inventory is situated in the mainstream view which does not need to identify its context and limits. In order to specify the significance of this inventory and, at the same time, to test the relevance of the life course perspective, broader more peripheral research should be taken into account that questions this hegemony by changing the empirical research object, modifying the research strategies or moving the teleological objective.

Long-term care is available for individuals with functional incapacities. Long-term care includes medical, social, and personal hygiene services, which help to maintain the autonomy of the elderly and allows them to live with dignity in spite of loss of autonomy. This definition provides long-term care services with a goal and a clientele. However, are individuals with functional incapacities first and foremost chronically ill? Should long-term care services be conceptualized as independent from medical care? Provincial government policy documents promote a social model of long-term care which privileges community services as opposed to institutional services. What in fact does this choice imply? To what extent have resources been allocated in accordance with these objectives? A study of these questions based on Canadian data on the relationship between illnesses, disabilities and functional incapacity and data from a historical survey of expenditures in Quebec for hospital care, medical care, institutional long-term care and community services indicates that illnesses, disabilities, and functional incapacity, although strongly correlated in an elderly population, cannot be collapsed into one big category for planning services; co-ordinated services in a multidisciplinary approach are needed, not dominance from one professional group. As to costs, an examination of the data shows that in relative terms costs for community care tended to increase significantly in the recent past. Yet it is not clear that there has been a transfer from short-term medical and hospital services to long-term care. However, there has been an important internal change in hospital costs, with the elderly representing the only group whose costs are rising. In short, despite the political rhetoric on long-term care for the elderly promoting a community approach, these services' main function is still the surveillance of the vulnerable elderly in both short- and long-term care facilities; adapting the elderly to their environment and the environment to the elderly play a growing, though minor, role in the overall picture of medical and social services.

This article explores the potential of discourse analysis for understanding issues in aging and in the lives of older people. We describe discourse analysis from the perspective of discursive psychology and identify the basic features of discourse analysis: (1) talk and written texts are viewed as action; (2) talk itself is the topic of interest (not an index of internal states); (3) variability is viewed positively. Stages of discourse analysis are briefly discussed. We then consider examples of discourse-analytic research (on identity construction, phatic communion, frame stereotyping and humour). We conclude by suggesting possible uses and applications of discourse analysis in research on aging.

The objective of this study was to attempt to develop an index of assessment items important to most, if not all, mental capacity determinations. A group process, judgmental method was used. Three separate panels of multidisciplinary experts were assembled to define relevant assessment items and to assign importance weights to the items. All three panels generated a list of assessment items, but panelists refused to assign importance weights. Four items were identified by all three panels, six were identified by two panels, and three were identified by one panel only. A composite list of mental capacity assessment items was generated, but the study failed to generate a standardized assessment instrument.

Feminist methodologies address the purpose and process of the research enterprise. They are not a particular set of techniques or procedures for gathering data. Rather they stem from the realization that it was the experiences of a very particular group of men, as both subject and object of enquiry, that defined social reality and the theories developed to explain our social worlds. This paper discusses some of the principles and approaches used by feminist researchers to explore the realities of women's lives. The author's research on home care workers, along with selected research in the field of aging, are used to illustrate the analysis and explore the implications of feminist methodologies for our understanding of aging in Canadian society.

Elder abuse is a social phenomenon which has recently been brought to light. As such it has brought about different legal responses in the Canadian provinces. The Atlantic provinces have all enacted Adult protection legislation modelled on child protection legislation. The author has undertaken a study of New Brunswick legislation in order to evaluate which factors are most important when judges order protective measures. Different materials have been analysed such as New Brunswick court files from 1983 to 1989, cases which have never gone to court collected by nurses and social workers, interviews with social workers, and the normal practice of New Brunswick judges and crown prosecutors. From those data, it was found that two different factors play an important role in the administration of Adult protection legislation. First, the legal representation of the elderly person is the most significant factor influencing the outcome of the case. The other important factor is the legal philosophy espoused by the relevant judges. Judges adopting a liberal philosophy are more critical of that legislation as compared with judges who accept the social intervention philosophy which forms the basis of this legislation.

The value that the elderly put on being autonomous is an intrinsic characteristic of the aging population that can have a decisive influence on their motivation to maintain or recover their autonomy. This study was designed to examine the importance that elderly people who have lost their autonomy put on the ability to perform themselves five activities of daily living: eating, washing, dressing, eliminating and moving around. It also explores the influence of age, sex, place of residence, level of physical autonomy, feeling of well-being and socio-economic status on the value put on autonomy. A non-probabilistic sample of 68 elderly subjects was interviewed and the value put on autonomy was evaluated using two instruments: Osgood, Suci and Tannenbaum's differential semantic, and Torrance's time trade-off technique. The results suggest that the subjects consider physical autonomy very important. Educational level and the degree of physical autonomy were the main factors linked to importance. However, no link with age or place of residence (institution vs. home) was found.

Cet article explore la satisfaction de la vie de 81 personnes âgées, sélectionnées au hasard (58 femmes et 23 hommes; âge moyen 76), d'origine chinoise et provenant de l'ouest du Canada. La variable dépendante, la satisfaction de la vie, a été mesurée en utilisant le «Life Satisfaction Index-A (LSI-A)» et une mesure globale à une seule question. Les résultats ont indiqué que la plupart des personnes âgées, immigrants d'origine chinoise faisant partie de cette étude, étaient plutôt satisfaites de leur vie et ont obtenu des résultats élevés en utilisant la mesure LSI-A. Niveau d'activité, santé psychologique, supports sociaux, amour propre, et le sens d'être en charge d'eux-mêmes étaient significativement associés avec les deux mesures de satisfaction. L'analyse de regression multiple révèle que la santé psychologique, le soutien social et le sens d'être en charge d'eux-mêmes étaient les meilleurs prédicteurs. Concernant la satisfaction de la vie, tant pour hommes que pour les femmes, il n'y avait pour ainsi dire aucune différence. D'autres analyses ont examinés les corrélate de la satisfaction de la vie des répondants des deux sexes. Les moyens d'améliorer la satisfaction de la vie de cette minorité ethnique sont le point d'intérêt de la discussion.

Although Canadian Medicare gives the population “reasonable” access” to all “medically necessary” physician and hospital services, long-term care is not formally subject to those conditions. In Ontario, long-term care involves a “patchwork quilt” of government, charitable, for-profit, and personally-provided services; an ongoing consultation has been under way in an attempt to rationalize service financing and provision. This paper reviews the series of policy proposals and the accompanying public consultation processes. It concludes that the emphasis on “community involvement” without a clear definition of “community” or the goals of participation has paradoxically increased the “scope of conflict,” increased frustration among stakeholders, and made policy action more difficult.

A survey on abuse of the elderly was mailed to 174 Canadian and American professionals who were identified as persons likely to be involved with cases of elder abuse. Neglect was the most commonly reported type of abuse, followed by financial and psychological abuse. Physical abuse constituted the smallest number of cases. While various family relationships were reported, middle-aged sons were the most common abusers, while older mothers were most frequently the victim. Regardless of the legislative approach taken, laws were reported to be generally effective. Greatest concerns were expressed regarding the lack of funds to administer and provide services to abused seniors.

The field of psychogerontology is data rich, but theory poor. It will be argued that a constructivist view of science in terms of models or metaphors encourages the development of theories in the field of aging. Historically, there are three psychological models: Age, aging and the aged. The psychology of the aged is concerned with the thematic study of the problematic and non-problematic elderly. The psychology of age focuses on age differences and compares groups of people of different ages. The psychology of aging studies some typicalness of change of average functioning over time. Recent psychological models of aging emphasize degree of variability, rather than average functioning. Primary, secondary and tertiary aging patterns are presented in terms of a differential psychology of aging. A theoretical explanation of the differential aging process will be given in terms of gerodynamics, which lays the foundation of the new branching model of aging.

La masse de la colonne vertébrale lombaire ainsi que la masse osseuse totale ont été déterminées chez 119 hommes et femmes âgés en bonne santé par la technique d'absorptiométrie bi-photonique. Le taux de perte du contenu minéral de la colonne vertébrale lombaire est le même chez l'homme âgé et chez la femme âgée, et n'est, sans doute, pas différent du taux accepté pour les jeunes adultes. Chez les femmes âgées, nous avons mesuré une perte annuelle significative de 24 g du contenu minéral osseux du squelette. Le plus important indice de prédiction de la masse osseuse est le poids de la personne. Des variables représentant la santé physique ou la force, seule la force du bras contribue à la variation de la masse osseuse, étant responsable de 4 pour cent de la variation dans la densité du minéral osseux de la colonne vertébrale lombaire de la femme.

Using event history data from the 1990 Canadian Family and Friends Survey, this study examines several factors that influence the likelihood of remarriage for women and men whose first marriages ended in widowhood. Our results suggest that large sex differences in remarriage exist, with ever-widowed men having appreciably higher rates than ever-widowed women. Remarriage rates are shown to vary by indicators of lifecycle and by socio-economic status. The implications of these results are discussed.

A brief introduction to gerontological longitudinal research methods and analysis is provided. The gerontological research questions that demand longitudinal study are identified. The use of secondary data analysis is shown to be essential to these studies. These analyses present opportunities to maximize both longitudinal research strategies and research efficiencies. The importance of administrative and financial stability for maintaining data bases for longitudinal research is presented by using examples. A brief overview of major Canadian longitudinal studies of aging and selected studies in other countries is provided. Finally, many sources of both quantitative and qualitative data for longitudinal gerontological studies are identified.

This paper describes the nursing home component of the population-based health information system developed in Manitoba, and four years (1989/90 to 1992/93) of data produced by this information system. The study presents regional comparisons of nursing home bed ratios, admissions per 1,000 elderly, days of care per capita, mean expected length of stay for new admissions and median length of waiting time prior to admission. Selected hospital indicators for long-stay patients are also presented. The study indicates that a population-based information system is a useful tool for managing the nursing home sector by highlighting the degree to which a province achieves distributional equity and equality of access to nursing home beds.
