The following study is based on the types of LeConte and Horn and material from the American Museum, Museum of Comparative Zooslogy, Canadian National Collectioas and from the collections of Messrs. Owen Bryant, C. A. Frost, Ralph Hopping, W. Knaus, and J. B. Wallis. Dr. W. Horn supplied specimens of two European species, of Aegialia rufa Fab. and sabuleti Panz.; these were of much aid in the study of the subgenera, the descriptions of which were made as detailed as possible so that descriptions of the species could be shorter.

Some time ago, through the kindness of Mr. Tams of the British Museum, I was enabled to have specimens compared with the types of dealbana Wlk. and similisana Wlk. and the genitalia of both types examined. The result is a confirmation of Heinrich's placement in his revisioni, dealbana falling to glaciana Moesch. and similisana to bipartitana Clem.

Professor W.H. Brittain has sent me a small lot of Andrena collected this year, and among them I find a species so striking that it should be described at once. As I am leaving for Africa it will be impossible to deal with the rest of the collection at this time.

This bark-beetle is locally distributed over the forested areas of Quebec and Ontario, extending westward into Manitoba; in the United States, it has been recorded from Wisconsin and Michigan.

The insect has been found breeding in fallen white pine and jack pine, and, within recent years, has also been recorded from red pine.

The fauna of Utah is unusually rich in Diptera. Much remains to be done by way of recording the forms that occur in this area and in learning the distribution of the economic forms within the state. The following records are from recently classified material of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station collection. The writer is indebted to Messrs. J.M. Aldrich, C.H. Curran, C.T. Greene, R.H. Painter, and J.S. Hined for naming most of the material listed below.

In a recent contribution in this Journal, I described a few new Diptera from Canada. The present paper contains descriptions of six new Canadian species and two from the United States, the types of the Canadian species being in the Canadian National Collection. The descriptions of two of the species of Ptiolina in this paper have been prepared by Dr. M. D. Leonard and are included in order that the key to species may be complete. From our study of this genus it seems probable that there are other species to be found, especially in the north where so little collecting has been done.

Female holotype: Color: head and prothorax dark brown, pterothorax dark brown with some red hypodermal pigmentation, abdomen uniformly brolwn. Antennal segments uniformly dark brown with the exception of the third which is yellowish brown. Legs concolorous with body except the tarsi and distal ends of fore tibiae which are light yellowish brown. Fore wings brown, light in basal third. Ocelli with orange red crescents. Body spines dark brown.

While it is not unlikely that additional species will be discovered in the Pacific Coast region, perhaps well northward in Alaska, the Papaipema fauna which reaches the Atlantic seaboard of our country will doubtless remain much the richer comparatively.

The genus Erythroneura was divided by W. L.. McAtee and later confirmed by Wm. Robinson, into several groups by the venation of the front wing. The maculata group was characterized particularly by the absence of the M-Cu cross-vein and by the base of cell M4 being angulate. In dissecting and studying the male genitalia of several hundred specimens of this group a good many undescribed forms have been found. It is the purpose of the present paper to begin a study of the entire group, redescribing named species wliere necessary and adding the new forms. Drawings and photographs have been made but will be published later.

In a paper on “The Digger Wasps of the Genus Podalonia (Psammophila)” (Proc. U. S. Nat. Mus., Vol. 71, p. 25, 1927) the writer ended a discussion of the possibility that Podalonia luctuosa Sm. is only a differently colored P. violaceipennis (Lep.) with the statement : “On the whole it seems best to leave luctuosa as a species separate from violaceipennis, for the present, until more pairs have been captured and the evidence they may give becomes available.”

During a recent study of the material in the family Phryganeidae in the Canadian National Collection, three nondescript species of the genus Prophryganea ganea Martynov have appeared. One of them, viz. P. deflata nov., is so close to P. improba (Hagen) as to be inseparable on any but the genitalic character illustrated herewith. As the range of P. deflata is very much that of P. improba (Hagen), it is questionable if the five ♂ co-types of the latter are conspecific; that one therefore which was deposited in the Canadian National Collection some years ago by Doctor Nathan Banks, is here designed lectotype, and its genitalia and alar nervation illustrated. This specimen and the genitalic slide are being returned for deposition in the Cambridge Museum of Comparative Zoology.

In 1908 Professor T. D. A. Cockterell, (Trans. Am. Ent. Soc., xxxiv, 247-254) reviewed the American species of the Family Nemestrinidae occurring North of Mexico, including the fossil forms, and in that paper three species of the genus Rhynchocephalus were considered. During the summer of 1922 the author captured a number of specimens of a species of Nemestrinidae while on a collecting trip at Baldwin Hill, about 12 miles from Lawrence, Kansas.

Descriptions of four new species of Diptera contained in a collection received for identification from the Entomological Branch of the Department of Agriculture are contained in the following pages. The types are deposited in the Canadian National Collection of Insects.

Length 3.6 - 4.3 mm.; width 1.8 - 2.2. mm. Body moderately convex. Brown or blackish, the legs and sometimes the venter paler ; shining.

Front rather coarsely, closely punctate, clypeus granulate, the granules fine and moderately close.

During the summer of 1929 it occurred to the author to collect the subterranean insects of stands of marsh grass (Spartina Michauxiana Hitchcock). No large areas of this grass were found in the vicinity of Ames, Iowa. The places of study hence were restricted to a half dozen small spots along the fence lines of tilled fields near Ames. The soil was a black loam and not well-drained at these places. The digging in this tough sod proved rather a slow procedure. With a spade a piece of sod about six by eight inches was loosened at a time and the mass of rootstocks, roots and soil was separated at the side of the road to bring the insects into view. This method did not lend itself to quantitative study.

This species, described from a single rather imperfect male specimen, was found very abundantly in certain sections of the Knowlton, Que. region in 1929 and 1930, the adults swarming at dusk and mating on warm evenings in the latter half of June. The very striking nymph was also secured in the small brooks of the Bolton Pass section, four or five miles south of Knowlton. The following notes on the species are offered to supplement the original description.

Owing to their general similarity the species of this genus have been much confused and for some time we have been accumulating material in the hopes of being able to straighten out the nomenclature. With the exception of intermedius Eaton from Arizona, which is entirely unknown to me, I find I can now satisfactorily tie down the existing names and incorporate therefore in the present paper the result of my studies.

The following bees, obtained by Professor Brittain of Macdonald College, are of more than ordinary interest and should be recorded.

Apart froni the small size of the insects the main obstacle in determining material in this genus has been the difficulty in identifying the species described by older authors. For some time been have been amassing material in the group and I believe that, with more or less topotypical specimens of every described species before me, I have tied down these names with a reasonable amount of surety.
