Summary
As discussed in Chapter 1, auroras may have been mankind’s first introduction to solar-terrestrial physics and the plasma universe, but early inhabitants of this planet did not have an understanding of the physical processes that could produce them. Dancing lights in the sky cannot just be ignored. Thus auroras became omens. Religious interpretations and myths had to take the place of physical explanations. This was particularly necessary in the polar regions where this phenomenon was quite common.
