The testament of John Fraunceys [25 June 1405]
In the name of God, Amen. On the 25 June ad 1405 and the sixth year of the reign of King Henry IV, I, John Goodman, otherwise called Fraunceys, citizen and goldsmith of London, of sound mind and good memory, thinking ahead to last things [death], make, ordain, and constitute this my present testament concerning each and all of my lands, tenements and rents with their appurtenances which I have in the city of London, in this manner: Firstly, I bequeath my soul to almighty God and to the blessed Mary his mother, and to all his saints, and my body to a church burial according to the direction and instructions of my executors. Item, I give and bequeath to Elizabeth my wife each and all of my lands and tenements and rents with all their houses, shops, upper rooms, cellars, and all their other appurtenances which I have in the city of London in the parishes of St Vedast, St Michael le Querne, St Augustine at the gate of St Paul’s, and St Michael Wood Street on Huggin Lane, but except for a certain shop with houses built above and its appurtenances now held and lived in by Elizabeth Pyngwidelle, which is in my alley in Old Change in the said parish of St Augustine and which shop with houses built above and its appurtenances I give and leave to the same Elizabeth Pyngwidelle to have and to hold for the term of her lifetime, from the chief lords of that fee by the services due from it and accustomed by right.
