Grant by William and Joanna Dirie to John de Lesene [n.d. (1299) and enrolled 3 March 1309]
May those present and future know that we, William Dirie, citizen of London, and Joanna his wife have by unanimous assent given, granted, and by this our present deed have confirmed to John de Lesene, citizen and mazer-keeper of London, all that plot of land with houses built above and all its other appurtenances which we had in the parish of All Hallows Staining in London from the demise of William Scot, “hurer” [capmaker], as is contained more fully in his deed drawn up for us concerning this. That aforesaid plot of land with houses built above lies breadthwise between the king’s road to the south and the tenement of Geoffrey de Meldeburne to the north, and it extends lengthwise from the king’s road to the west as far as the garden of Nicholas de Gotham to the east. To have and to hold … in fee and inheritance in perpetuity, without any diminution or any retention. Paying annually to us and our heirs or assigns one rose at the Feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, and ten shillings sterling to the parishioners of the said church of All Hallows Staining for the support of the lights and the fabric of the same church, this to be paid at the four principal terms of the year customary in the city of London, i.e. two shillings and six pence at each term, and two shillings per year to the Hospital of St James without London, to be paid at two of the year’s terms, i.e. twelve pence at the Feast of Michaelmas and twelve pence at the Feast of Easter, for all secular demands and every exaction.
