Grant by the Master, brethren and sisters of the Hospital of St James to Andrew Le Cornur [n.d. (1255–56)]
To all the Christian faithful whom this document may reach, the Master, brethren, and sisters of the Hospital of St James send greetings. Be it known to you all that we have by the unanimous consent of our chapter granted, demised, and by this our present deed confirmed to Andrew Le Cornur [the horner] a certain land of ours with houses built above and appurtenances which we had in a suburb of London, in Fleet Street, in the parish of St Dunstan in the West, from the gift and the testament of Stephen son of Robert of Crokers Lane. And it lies between the land and houses which used to be those of Thomas Hareng towards the east and the land and houses of John de Crahe towards the west, and it extends lengthwise from the king’s road as far as the land of Robert Cook [or the cook] towards the north. i.e. whatever we had there or should have had in lands, buildings, wood and stone, in length and in breadth, and in all things without any diminution. To have and to hold by the said Andrew and his heirs or his assigns and their heirs, excepting men in religious orders and Jews, from us and our successors in fee and inheritance, freely, quit, wholly, well and in peace, in perpetuity.
