The provincial council of Armagh, 1553
[101] Reformanda in concilio provinciali reverendissimi in Christo patris ac domini Domini Georgii Dowdall archiepiscopi Armachani, totius Hiberniae primatis celebrato in ecclesia Sancti Petri de Drogheda, anno Domini 1553.
[I.]1319 Imprimis ut declarentur omnes sacerdotes non modo qui hac in tempestate matrimonium contrahere praesumpserunt, verum et notarii fornicatores tarn pluries moniti ut scorta sua non secus quam uxores in domibus suis publice detinuerunt suis beneficiis privatos et inhabiles ad regimen vel ad sacramentorum administrationem donee cum eis super his sufficienter erit dispensatum [102] et alii fornicatores privandi sicut per superiorem . [2.] Item qualiter procedatur contra episcopos et alios quoscunque conferentes beneficia ecclesiastica etiam quibus imminet cura animarum laicis et pueris sub tali fraudulento colore ut aliquis presbyter collatus sit aut institutus fiructibus cedentibus ipsi laico seu puero definitum est quod episcopi conferentes beneficia suspendantur a collatione beneficiorum et beneficia sic collata de novo per metropolitanum dignis conferantur.
[3.] Item quomodo procedatur contra simoniacos episcopos qui praedicto vel alio quovismodo vendunt ecclesiastica beneficia et de dispositione beneficiorum sic collatorum suspendantur episcopi ut supra et beneficia conferentur ut supra.
[4.] Item de beneficiis divisis sive illo sive aliis pluribus viis et modis, definitum est quod vacant ilia beneficia.
[5.] Item, quid agendum sit de laicis et nobilibus qui per falsi suggestionem et veri suppressionem impetrant a sede apostolica beneficia curata in simplices praebendas et dignitates etiam regulares in commendas, false asserentes decorem et venustatem ecclesiae cathedralis per hoc augmentari, definitum est [103] quod literae similiter impetratae seu in futurum impetrandae sint surrepliciae.
[6.] Item, ut declarator in quo statu consistent praelati et sacerdotes qui hac praeterita tempestate iuxta ritum haereticorum non solum divina celebrarunt officia et ecclesiastica sacramenta ministrarunt, verum et sectam illam et ritum in suis praedicationibus approbaverunt et commendaverunt, definitum est quod omnes supradicti qui non voluntate sed metu hoc fecerunt admittentur ad gratiam et absolutionem per acta paenitentia.
[7.] Item, ut decetero non modo praelati et sacerdotes verum etiam omnes laici et ceteri Christi fideles cuiuscunque gradus, status aut conditionis existunt per totam provinciam omnes ecclesiae antiquos ritus et ceremonias in crucibus, imaginibus, luminaribus, thuribulis, horis canonicis,
