The archbishop's mandate
Walterus, permissione divina Dunelmensis episcopus, dilecto filio priori ecclesiae nostrae Dunelmensis, salutem, gratiam et benedictionem. Literas reverendissimi in Christo patris et domini nostri Domini Richardi, Dei gratia Eboracensis archiepiscopi, Angliae primatis et apostolicae sedis legati, nuper recepimus, tenorem qui sequitur continentes:
Richardus, permissione divina Eboracensis archiepiscopus, Angliae primas et apostolicae sedis legatus, venerabili fratri nostro Domino Waltero, Dei gratia Dunelmensi episcopo, suffraganeo nostro, salutem et fraternam in Domino caritatem. Breve regium nuper recepimus cuius tenorem ad prius habere volumus per expressa.
Quocirca, reverende pater, auctoritate dicti reverendi patris cuius vices gerimus, tenore praesentium peremptorie vos citamus ac priorem ecclesiae vestrae Dunelmensis et capitulum eiusdem, universosque abbates et priores alios etiam electivos, exemptos et non exemptos, archidiaconos, decanos, capitula, conventus et collegia, clerumque totum vestrarum civitatis et diocesis Dunelmensium per vos citari in virtute oboedientiae volumus et mandamus quod vos, reverende pater, dictique abbates, priores, archidiaconi et decani personaliter; conventus vero capitula et collegia huiusmodi per procuratores suos singulos atque clerus per duos sufficientes procuratores et idoneos ab ipsis conventibus, capitulis, collegiis et clero legitime deputatos, die Lunae proximo post festum Inventionis Crucis, videlicet quinto die mensis Maii proximo fiituro [5 May 1404] in ecclesia cathedrali Eboracensi coram dicto reverendo patre aut commissariis suis uno vel pluribus compareatis et compareant ac compareat quilibet eorundem, super his quae pro defensione et salvatione ecclesiae et regni Anglicanorum ac marchiarum eiusdem (ut praefertur) exponi ibidem contigerit, una cum praefato reverendo patre ac aliis praelatis dictae Eboracensis provinciae, cum continuatione et prorogatione sequentium tune dierum praesentibus tractaturi, vestrum et suum consilium sanum super praemissis et ea concernentibus impensuri, his autem qui ibidem concorditer ordinari contigerit consensuri, facturi et recepturi quod huiusmodi convocationis negotia exigunt et natura. Vobis etiam, reverende pater, per praesentes intimamus et denuntiamus ac per vos singulis abbatibus, prioribus et decanis ac aliis vestrarum civitatis et diocesis praelatis intimari volumus et iniungi, quod vos nee eos a personali comparitione in huiusmodi congregatione dictis die et loco, auctoritate dicti reverendi patris, Deo concedente, facienda, excusatos habere non intendimus ista vice, sed eorum contumacia (si qui forsan absentes fuerint) secundum iuris exigentiam canonice punietur.
