The first royal writ for a convocation on 3 March
Rex venerabili in Christo patri R[ichardo], eadem gratia archiepiscopo Eboracensi, Angliae primati, salutem. Cum venerabilis pater Rogerus archiepiscopus ceterique confratres co-episcopi ac suffraganei sui et alii praelati et clerus Cantuariensis provinciae in ultima convocatione praelatorum et cleri in ecclesia Sancti Pauli Londoniarum, secundo die Martii proximo praeterito [2 March 1398] per ipsum archiepiscopum facta, pro defensione regni nostri ac Ecclesiae Anglicanae nobis unam decimam et medietatem unius decimae, de beneficiis ecclesiasticis, taxatis et ad decimam solvere consuetis, beneficiis pauperum monialium, religiosorum, collegiorum et hospitalium dumtaxat exceptis, concesserint; unam videlicet medietatem inde in festo Sancti Martini episcopi tune proximo futuro [ 11 November 1398], alteram medietatem in festo nativitatis Sancti Iohannis Baptistae tune proximo sequendo [24 June 1399] et tertiam medietatem in festo Sancti Martini extunc proximo sequendo [ 11 November 13 99] fideliter persolvendam. Et quia sicut clare scitis ad subeundum et supportandum sumptuosa et immensa onera quae nos pro salvatione et defensione dicti regni nostri, ac marchiarum eiusdem, necnon ecclesiae sanctae facere oportebit de bonis nostris absque fidelium ligeorum nostrorum adminiculo non sufficimus nee valemus; vobis in fide et dilectione quibus nobis tenemini rogando mandamus, sicut pluries mandavimus, quatenus praemissis debito intuitu attentis et ponderatis, suffraganeos vestros, decanos et priores ecclesiarum cathedralium, abbates et priores, et alios electivos, exemptos et non exemptos, archidiaconos, capitula, conventus et collegia, totumque clerum cuiuslibet dioecesis vestrae provinciae ad comparendum coram vobis in ecclesia cathedrali Beati Petri Eboracensis vel alibi prout expedire videritis, die Lunae in tertia septimana Quadragesimae proximo futuro [3 March 1399] more solito convocari faciatis, et ipsos in hac parte ex causa praedicta ad subsidium in hoc casu competens et necessarium, ad supportationem dictorum onerum nobis concedendum eo specialius et efficacius quo magis sciveritis aut poteritis, solicite inducatis, et partes vestras ad hoc diligenter et effectualiter apponatis; nos in cancellaria nostra de quantitate subsidii illius et de terminis solutionis eiusdem sub sigillo vestro distincte et aperte, citra octavum diem, eundem diem Lunae proximo sequente [10 March 1399] certificantes. Et hoc sicut nos et honorem nostrum et salvationem et defensionem ecclesiae catholicae ac regni nostri praedicti diligitis, nullatenus omittatis.
