The royal writ for parliament
Richardus, Dei gratia rex Angliae et Franciae et dominus Hiberniae, venerabili in Christo patri Thomae, eadem gratia archiepiscopo Eboracensi, Angliae primati, salutem. Quia de avisamento concilii nostri pro quibusdam arduis et urgentibus negotiis nos statum et defensionem regni nostri Angliae ac Ecclesiae Anglicanae necnon prosperum regimen et felicem gubernationem terrae nostrae Hiberniae ac ligeorum nostrorum ibidem contingentibus quoddam parliamentum nostrum apud Westmonasterium in quindena Sancti Hilarii proximo futura [27 January 1395] teneri ordinavimus et ibidem vobiscum ac cum ceteris praelatis, magnatibus et proceribus dicti regni nostri colloquium habere et tractatum, vobis in fide et dilectione quibus nobis tenemini firmiter iniungendo mandamus quod, consideratis dictorum negotiorum arduitate et periculis imminentibus, cessante quacunque excusatione, dictis die et loco personaliter intersitis nobiscum ac cum ceteris praelatis, magnatibus et proceribus praedictis, super dictis negotiis tractaturi, vestrumque consilium impensuri, et hoc sicut nos et honorem nostrum ac salvationem et defensionem regni et ecclesiae praedictorum ac prosperum regimen et felicem gubernationem dictae terrae nostrae Hiberniae ac ligeorum nostrorum ibidem expeditionemque dictorum negotiorum diligitis nullatenus omittatis. Ne (quod absit) per vestri absentiam quam nisi tanta infirmitate tune detenti fueritis quod aliqualiter illuc laborare non poteritis nullo modo excusatam habere volumus ista vice expeditio negotiorum nostrorum praedictorum retardetur seu aliqualiter differatur, praemunientes decanum et capitulum ecclesiae vestrae Eboracensis ac archidiaconos totumque clerum vestrae diocesis quod iidem decanus et archidiaconi in propriis personis suis ac dictum capitulum per unum, idemque clerus per duos procuratores idoneos plenam et sufficientem potestatem ab ipsis capitulo et clero divisim habentes, dictis die et loco personaliter intersint, ad consentiendum his quae tune ibidem de communi consilio ipsius regni nostri divina favente dementia contigerit ordinari. Teste Edmundo duce Eboracensi custode Angliae apud Westmonasterium vicesimo die Novembris anni regni nostri decimo octavo [20 November 1394].
