Summary

This volume of new essays is based on a conference on ‘Understanding the Passions in Roman Literature and Thought’ held at the University of Exeter in July 1992. Eight of the chapters are based on papers given at the conference; three were written specifically for the volume. We would like to thank the British Academy, the Classical Association, the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies, and the University of Exeter for financial assistance to the conference and to the costs of preparing this book. We are grateful to all those who participated in this conference, as well as to those contributing to the volume; also to Pauline Hire at the Cambridge University Press for her guidance and support, and to the two readers for the Press. Special thanks are due to Kerensa Pearson for her characteristically meticulous secretarial work in preparing the volume for publication.
