Summary
In a religiously plural society, the role of religion in public life becomes an interreligious issue in itself. This chapter discusses various positions on the relationship of religion and state, and explores how interpath encounters play out in public discourse, public policy, public services, public space, and public schools. Because context is critically important, the focus is narrowly drawn—limited almost exclusively to the United States—while many of the issues obtain more broadly as well. Although there are many interreligious projects that focus on the public square, most of the encounters under discussion here flow from the natural ways we meet one another in shared society.
