Summary
While regional parties were alternatives to Masjumi, they were not directly competing with Masjumi for support in the regions or for positions at the national level. They also had formed independently, not out of former Masjumi members. For this reason, the first two years of Masjumi’s existence as a political party were a time of relative unity.
