Summary
Managing your career
‘What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.’
Ralph Waldo EmersonIn the first two parts of this book we have discussed how to become an independent scientist who can run a well-funded research group, publish papers of international quality, teach and train the next generation of scientists and contribute to the scientific community on local, national and international levels. In the final part we look at more long-term issues. Chapter 20 embraces Parts I and II by discussing ways to manage stress – an essential skill to acquire in any profession. Chapter 21 then goes on to look at the careers of four eminent scientists and to hear their views on ways to manage your career and your science. The last chapter (Chapter 22) provides a brief summary of the landscape upon which careers are mapped – specifically the higher educational system in the UK.
