Summary

CLAYHIDON

Four rates survive for this parish, near the Somerset border, which is located eleven miles north of Honiton. The parish had a population in 1642 of approximately 518 persons of whom some 14 per cent had paid the church rate.

Note: This rate, a fair copy with the signature added later, was written on a piece of vellum which measures approximately 4½ inches in width and 18¾ inches in length. It is endorsed ‘Cleyhidon Rate’.

3. Cleyhidon A copie of the Rate made for the repation of the Churche by the Parson & Churchwardens with the Consent of the prshioners after the rate of 1d in the pounde and to be encreased as occasion shall serve.

Note: This rate, a fair copy, was written on a sheet of paper which makes up four pages each of which measure approximately 4 inches in width and 12 inches in length. There is some slight water and rodent damage. The rate was endorsed in a later hand ‘Cleyhidon Rate’. The numerals are Roman with the exception of the year.

Cleyhiden A true Copie of the rate made for the repation of the Churche 2 April in the year 1615 by William Lee Clerke, John Page and Nicholas Nicholls Churchwardens George Summerhaies & John Tawker Sidemen, Tristram Tucker Harry Charde John Geninges Senior Tristram Corrte John Quante Nicholas Bradford John Austin, Martin Crocker and John Treke at 1d the pounde.

Note: This rate, a fair copy with the confirmation, signatures and signs added later, was written on a sheet of paper which measures approximately 8 inches in width and 12 inches in length. There is water damage. The numerals are Roman. It is endorsed ‘Exeter 3 Sept 1616’ and in a later hand ‘1613 Clayhidon Rate’.
