Summary

Un jour pur éclairoit mon ame;

J'unissois l'amour au devoir;

J'osois me livrer à ma flamme,

Ecouter le plus doux espoir.

Mais puis-je m'abuser encore?…

Cet espoir s’éteint dans mon cœur!

Toi qui me fuis, toi que j'adore,

Où veut-tu chercher le bonheur?

Quand tes soins me rendoient la vie,

Je crus les devoir à l'amour;

Je me disois: Je suis chérie,

Je saurai bien l’être toujours.

Mais puis-je me flatter encore?…

Non, l'espoir s’éteint dans mon cœur!

Cruel époux! Toi que j'adore,

Où veux-tu chercher le bonheur?

Quel sort affreux il me destine!

Que ne me laissoit-il mourir?…

Si tu n'aimes plus Caroline:

C'est là son unique désir.

Mais puis-je m'abuser encore?

Non, l'espoir s’éteint dans mon cœur!

Toi qui me fuis, toi que j'adore,

Où veux-tu chercher le bonheur?

Tu deviendras mon bien suprême,

O le plus chéri des portraits!

Tiens-moi lieu de celui que j'aime!

Viens du moins me rendre ses traits!

Mais puis je m'abuser encore?

J'ai ses traits: je n'ai plus son cœur!

Toi qui me fuis, toi que j'adore,

Où veux-tu chercher le bonheur?
